LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Take a look at local environmental problems and solutions, in-
cluding soil erosion, water quality, forest resources, wildlife
habitat, natural areas and conservation. Field trips will comprise
most of the class time.

LEGAL RIGHTS FOR FARM BORROWERS
Presented by a panel of lawyers and a chartered accountant,
this one day meeting covers a wide range of legal issues that
pertain to borrowing, farm mortgages, farm debts, bankruptcy
and insolvency plus other legal issues including estate plan-
ning. The meeting concludes with a question and answer peri-
od.

THE GREEN KITCHEN
With the increasing concern about the environment, there are
many things we can do right in our own kitchens. In this course,
a variety of areas are explored, "recipes" for cleaning products
are prepared and compared to commercial products. Everyone
takes home samples., 5

New M -F 100-140 hp tractors
Advanced QUADRAM Power makes a
difference you can hear and feel.
Massey -Ferguson is setting the standards for the 80s
with three new 100 to (40 hp high•performance tractors
that deliver improved engine torque characteristics
and fuel efficiency with lower noise levels and lower
engine strew*.

result, the engines are more effi-
cient and powerful. with much

Youll notice the Quadram dif-

smoother and quieter – up to fi0':
quieter than competitive engines.
But the only way you can really
appreciate the M -F Quadram

hear the tractors perform So even if

to yourself to see the latent in agri-

Soll samples - Ron Fleming points to the traces of worm burrows in
the soil cores, pores which allow the rapid flow of water down from
a fields surface to the drainage tile.
Centralia College conducts
unique study on water quality
A unique program conducted
at Centralia College of Agricultu-
ral Technology last fall is bring-
ing
ringing forward some very interest-
ing
nteresting data on how farmers can
improve the quality of water that
runs off their land.
A set of soil cores cut from lo-
cal fields last August under a
program supervised by CCAT re-
search engineer Ron Fleming,
were brought to the college la-
boratory to test how manure
samples would flow through
them and the contamination lev-
el of runoff water.
Fleming said the experiment
aimed at simulating and measur-
ing how manure contaminates
tile drains. Previous wisdom
had it that only surface water
was contaminated by manure,
but it is now evident manure
penetrates at least 30 cm below
the surface, and in some cases
managed to flow rapidly right
through Fleming's 60 cm cores.
Nevertheless, Fleming's re,
search is contradicting other
studies by the Ausable Bayfield
Cgnserkation, Authority,..*CCAAVs
experiments do not find cuntami--
nation as serious as the ABCA
has found, although Fleming
concedes the laboratory set up
may not fully duplicate what hap-
pens in a large field.
Worms, however, have been
singled out by both studies as a
significant factor in drain tile pol-
lution. Worms burrow to at least
a 60 cm depth and leave holes,
or "macropores" in the soil,
through which manure and pesti-
cides can penetrate to a tile
drain.
'Fleming's study, data from
which is still returning to his lab,
was conducted on both conven-
tional tillage and no -till land in
both sandy loam and clay loam
soils. He speculates light tillage
of the land before spreading ma-
nure may help close up worm
macropores.
"We're at least trying to figure
out how manure goes through
soil," said Fleming, who suggest-
ed
uggested once the problem is under-
stood, solutions may become ev-
ident.
"Maybe the option is to put a
tool bar on a [manure] tanker,
but I'm just dreaming right now,"
said Fleming, who suggested
even the direct injection of ma-
nure into the ground may do lit-
tle more than pump it into worm
burrows.
Manure handling has been sin-
gled out as a major source of
pollution of rural streams and
rivers and government agencies
are encouraging farmers to re-
duce the amounts of fecal colif-
orm bacteria which .find their way
into their tile drains after ma-
nure application.
If manure is found to be con-
taminating a drain, the farmer is
required, by law, to contact the
ministry of the environment im-
mediately. Contaminated water
can be pumped out of the drain
back onto the land in an effort to
refitter it. Farmers who fail to
notify the authorities can be
fined under the Drainage Act
"It's not enough to just say 'oh
shoot, there's manure getting in
there, i hope nobody notices',"
said Fleming.
CCAT's study 'Of -manure flow-
ing through soil samples is quite
unique. A similar study was con-
ducted in England to test for
pesticide contamination, but
Fleming concedes pesticides are
not as liquid as manure and rain-
fall plays a larger part in those
scenarios.
Many farmers are tuming to ir-
rigation with manure for fertiliza-
tion, partly because of the Tess
amount of soil compaction. Un-
fortunately, Fleming notes his
study shows irrigation may be
ending up in the worm macro -
pores. Irrigation also poses the
threat of large scale drain pollu-
tion should a pipe burst. •
"It's just dam frustrating for
the farmers," said Fleming.
"They don't know what to do
next"
With any luck, however,
CCAT's study may offer more un-
derstanding of the effects of
drainage on manure pollution,
the extent of the problem, and
how farmers may be able to find
practical solutions.
