Hawks win two on the road
BELMONT - It was a very suc-
cessful weekend road trip for the
Exeter Hawks as they won a pair of
Western Ontario Junior D' Hockey
League games, improving their
west division record to 21-6-2.
On Saturday they came from be-
hind to double the Belmont Pests 6-
3 while the previous night in Al-
vinston, beat the Flyers 5-3.
With the two wins, Exeter moved
into a tie for second place with
their biggest rivals the Lucan Irish.
Both teams have 44 points, one be-
hind the Port Stanley Lakers.
The Hawks will take a bit of a
break as they don't see action again
until January 30 when they travel to
Lucan for another big game with
the Irish.
In Belmont, the Hawks got on the
board first as Derek Shackleton
scored a powerplay goal but the
Pests came back and went up 2-1 as
Jim Coombs connected and Dave
Goodhume got his first of two.

times. Andrew Barton, who had a
four -point weekend, Shackleton
and Doug Clark found the mark
while Goodhume got his second.
Belmont couldn't get going in the
third period as Exeter goalie Clint
McCann made 13 saves, 40 on the
night. Cory Colhoun and Jim Dick-
ins padded the Hawks lead.
Exeter's Jamie Tomes squared off
with Brent Stock in the secondri-
od and both were ejected for fight-
ing.

Alvinston jumped into a 2-0 lead
before the Hawks came to life in
this one.
With only 43 seconds left in the
opening frame, Alvinsten's Brad
Blain connected and early in the
second Darryl Bonsteel gave the
home team a two -goal lead.
But Exeter woke up in a big way
when Mark Reid scored at 9:51 just
45 seconds before Colhoun could
tie the score. Haden Tinney broke
the stalemate and Dickins got what
proved to be the winner from de-
fencemen David Dalrymple and
Larry Lewis.
Tinney with his second, was the
only scoring in the last period. The
game was a physical one as Col-
houn, Dickins and Jeff Dalrymple
were involved in a fight with just
two seconds left in the middle peri-
od.
Shawn Redick, Glen Morris and
Kirby McCarter hit the showers
early for the Flyers who remain in
last place in the nine team west di-
vision with just 15 points.

Team talk helps, Irish beat Mitchell
LUCAN - A team meeting
seemed to help as the Lucan Irish
beat the Mitchell Hawks 6-2 in
Western Ontario Junior 'D' Hock-
ey League action here Wednesday
ntt.
It was the first win for the Irish
in 1991 as they improved their
record to 20-5-3. However, they
have been struggling on the ice
and seemed very disappointed
about the recent 5-5 draw with the
Port Stanley Lakers.
"We had a big talk Monday
night after practice and that helped
quite a bit," said Lucan captain
Brian Schuyler.
He netted a pair of goals as the
Irish led 3-0 after the first period
and 5-0 after 40 minutes.
"We got in a tailspin and every-
one got down," said coach Ken
Needham. "We had little bit of a
chat and hopefully this is the new
look."
Lucan completely dominated the
game as they were aggressive go-
ing to the puck and physically out-
played the Hawks.
Midway through the first period,
Schuyler was tripped by Daryl
Edit which set up Greg DePrest's
powerplay goal. About three min-
utes later, die Irish worked the puck
around like it was a powerplay, and
Schuyler got his first of two.
Late in the opening frame, the
Hawks were putting on a lot of
pressure but Lucan quickly went up
the ice and Steve Matthews con-
verted a Jon McEachem shot.

Lucan added two more in the sec-
ond when the Hawks made the mis-
take of putting two players on Ja-
son Wilson in front of the net
which Schuyler left wide open to
pop in his second.
DePrest got his second as' he
slipped around Mitchell goalie Joe
Harris and pushed the puck across
the goal line.
Tough period: The final period
saw the Hawks try and comeback
as they outscored the Irish 2-1. At
the five minute mark, Jamie Hislop
broke Bob Szabo's bid at his fourth
shutout.
Hisiop scored on the powerplay
as the Irish seemed to be In the pen-
alty box a few more times than the
Hawks in the final 20 minutes.
"We broke down a little bit in the
third period. They won that peri-
od," said Needham.
Mitchell had a two-man advan-
tage for 1:16 but couldn't convert.
"Penalty killing is probably our
strongest point. I wish our power-
play was like that," said Needham.
DePrest got his hat trick at 13:52
and Mitchell's Steve Murray round-
ed out the scoring.
It was a very physical game as
Lucan's Andy Ross, Todd Hayter
and Jason Wilson were all ejected
for fighting.
"There's always been quite a ri-
valry because we've been putting
them out in the playoffs," said
Schuyler.
Needham did some shuffling for
Wednesday's game as he moved
big Jon McEachern over to centre. .
Veteran Rick Weishar, who was
just coming off a knee injury, an-
nounced earlier in the week he has
left the team.
LUCKY CHARMS: Jeremy Je-
mec and Tim Hayter both had three
assists...Weishar was an assistant

HURON PARK - Tammy
Mathers scored two goals as the
Huron Park Pacers defeated vis-
iting Port Stanley 4-1 in Western
Ontario Women's Hockey
League action Saturday night.
Huron Park got on the board
first when captain Yvonne Wells
scored unassisted at the 4:31
point of the opening period. But
Port Stanley came back and
evened things up when Ann Ho-
ward connected.
The Pacers dominated the
middle period scoring a pair of
unanswered tallies. Mathers
teamed with Mary McKillop and
Welts and just 23 seconds later
Theresa McGee scored from
Sherri Pickering.
Mathers added an insurance
marker with only 26 ticks left on
the clock as Wells assisted, pick-
ing up her third point of the
night.
The 8-3-0 Pacers travel to
London's Carling arena on Sun-
day when they take on the first
place London Devilettes.
