Senior 'A' Lockey action
Mohawks chop down LumI$rKngs
By Fred Groves
EXETER - Right winger Joe
Scherer fired a career high seven
goals as the Exeter Mohawks ham-
mered the visiting Dresden Lum-
berKings 14-3 in interlocking
Southern Ontario -Seaway Cyclone
Senior 'A' hockey action Sunday
night.
The win improved the Mohawks
record to 14-4-1 in the Southern
Ontario loop. Last night they trav-
elled to Aylmer for a tough game
against the Hornets and face Lake-
side in exhibition action on Friday.
It was all Exeter Sunday as they
vaulted into a 4-0 Lead before
Dresden goalie Ken Pailey was in-
jured and the game was halted for
several mi tes.
Moho s' forward Richard
Hawk' was shoved into Pailey
w ck the crossbar very hard.
He was taken off the ice on a
backboard and taken by ambu-
lance to the South Huron Hospital.
It was later reported that Palley
did not suffer any serious injury
although he was kept overnight for
observations. After the collision,
Hawkins and Ken DeBrouwer
squared off.
Hawkins received a major for
charginginto Pailey and because
of his fghting major, was slapped
with a two -game suspension for
receiving two major penalties in
the same stoppage of play.
When play resumed, the Lum-
berKings were without a coach as
B' cCabe stayed with Pailey.
Dresden McManus scored a
powerplay goal ill the first period.
With his seven goals, Scherer
leads the Mohawks with 18 tallies.
"I think we needed a game like
this to find the touch again," said
Scherer who also added an assist
for a big sight -point night.
The Mohawks played a wide
open free wheeling brand of hock-
ey Sunday night, something they
won't be able to do against the bet-
ter teams.
"You can't play hockey like this
against Aylmer. They'll walk all
over you," said Scherer.
Last season Scherer had a very
good chance of winning the scoring
title but his points against Lambeth
were taken away -because that club
folded.
He doesn't seem to be putting a
lot of priority on capturing the scor-
ing title.
"It would be nice, but right now
we want to catch Aylmer for first
place."
Also scoring for the Mohawks
were Greg Payne with two goals
and Dale Gibbon, Gord Brooks,
Hawkins, Rob Moore and David
Akcy with one apiece. Ron Elliott
and Tim Fritz each had three as-
sists.
McManus had two for the Lum-
berKings with one from Jeff
McFeggan.
Exeter led 10-1 after two periods
of play but assistant coach Al Gates
wasn't entirely pleased.
"I thought we were a little too
scrambly. That's what happens
against a team like that."
Bill Glover had to sit out last
night's *ame in Aylmer because of
an inciting penalty he got during a
second period fight with Tony Dob-
belaar.
Paul Woolford started in goal for
the Mohawks but gave way to Der-
ek Cooper at the start of the third
period.
Mohawks 4, Point Edward 4
Trailing 3-0, the Mohawks rallied
back to tie the host Point Edward
Champs 4-4 in Senior 'A' action
Thursday night.
Point Edward was led by the two -
goal effort of Mark Dottori but
Brooks had, one of his best games
of the seasons well. '
Down 3-0 midway in the second
period, the veteran Brooks scored a
shorthanded goal and with 1:36 left
in the period, teamed with Greg
Snyder to pull the Mohawks to
within one.
Exeter outscored and outplayed
the Champs in the third period as
Moore and Scherer connected for
the Mohawks. Dark had- a strong
game in net for the visitors, turning
away 40 shots including eight in
the overtime.

bon and several other Mohawks
players and executive helped out

Dark shuts out allstars
DRESDEN - Exeter goalie Bill Dark played 32 minutes of shutout hock-
ey Saturday night to help the Southern Ontario Senior A all-stars to an 8-3
win over the Seaway -Cyclone all-stars.
Dark, in his third season with the Mohawks, faced 15 shots before giv-
ing way to Dorchester's Kevin Cole.
Also representing the division leading Mohawks were Richard Hawkins,
Gord Brooks, Greg Snyder, Les Arts and Ron Elliott and coaches Dave
Revington and Al Gates.
"I'd say about six were good testers," said Dark of the shots he faced.
While Dark did play well in the annual all-star matchup, he said his best
game of the season came Thursday- in Point Edward against the Champs
where he tied his former team 4,4.
"I was sharp but Thursday was my best game. I felt relaxed, (in Dres-
den) the play on the ice was intense, both teams wanted to win."
Dark may have sparked the Southern league's defence on Saturday, but
it was Ingersoll B's Terry Hildebrandt providing the offence. He netted
three goals in the fust penod to give his team a 3-0 lead. His Ingersoll lin-
emates Tim Geoffrey and Terry Whalen drawing the assists.
The South padded their lead in the second as Dorchester's Tim Duff net-
ted a pair and Geoffrey and Aylmer's Jeff Watters also scored. Brooks had
an assist in the second period.
Hildebrandt once again teamed with Geoffrey and Whalen midway
throujh the third frame. Answering for the Seaway -Cyclone side were
Dresden's Rob Copeland, Mark Dottori of Point Edward and Strathroy's
Jacques Beaulieu.
Dark, said he had fun in the game which brought the best Senior players
from Southwestern Ontario together.
"You get a different perspective on some of the guys you play against,"
said Dark.
Stuart nets ten points for junior hoopers
EXETER - Ryan Stuart scored
10 points, including a pair of
three -pointers to pace the South
Huron Panthers to a slim 31-28
win over visiting Goderich in Hu-

action on Wednesday.

Trailing 16-13 at the half, the
Panthers had a strong fourth quar-
ter in which they outscored the Vi-
kings 7-2. Greg Agnew also had a
good game for South Huron as he
netted eight points.
A very low scoring senior game
saw the visiting Vikings win 47-31.
Both teams had lots of chances in
the first half but a poor shooting
percentage resulted in a 20-9 Gode-
rich lead at the half.
The, Panthers never came alive
until;Jlto fourth quarter when they
got 19 points Including six in a
row.
Midway through the final eight
minutes, Pete McAllister picked off
a pass and got it over to Dwayne
Hayter for the best executed basket
of the game. The rally continued
when Pat Ducharme drove to the
hoop, was stopped but the rebound
was put in.

our tryout camp, we had over 60,"
said manager Larry bemoor.
Demoor said the Winter Hawks
have some big players and a lot of
fast skaters. Sounds a lot like thea- i
Mohawks so the two i`s ahOuld71
be evenly matched. .
"We've got some fairly decent
hockey players," he said.
One of those is Dan Turner whc
was drafted by,the Toronto Maple
Leafs after a junior caroler with the
Medicine Hat Tigers.
The Winter Hawks, just two
points behind league -leading Cree-
