Hawks win in overtime
Clark bursts out of scoring slump
Exeter downs Lucan 4-3
LUCAN - It took a month to do
it, but Doug Clark has broken out
of his scoring slump.
Friday night he scored the over-
time goal that lifted the Exeter
Hawks to a 4-3 win over the host
Lucan Irish.
It was the third meeting of the ri-
val Junior 'D' teams and second
win for the Hawks who are in a
battle for second place with the
Port Stanley Lakers in the west di-
vision.
Just 51 seconds into Friday's
overtime period, Clark caught Lu -
can goalie Bob Szabo out of his
net and notched his 19th goal of
the season. It was his first since
November 30.
"I just pulled it from behind the
net and put it in," he said of the
game winner.
The big right winger has been
known to start the season off with
a bang bcfore and then struggle to
score.
Things haven't been going
right, I haven't been gcuing the
breaks," said Clark.
Exeter coach George Pratt, Jr.
said he and coach John Kernick
have been trying desperately to
brcak Clark out of his slump.
"We've been after him, mapping
out his play from the start of the
year," said Pratt.
The game was forced into over-
time•when Exeter's Derek Shackle-
ton was left unguarded in the slot
and fired a quick shot into the cor-
ner past Szabo.
"We're not picking those guys
up," said Lucan coach Ken Need-
ham.
Score first: Lucan got on the
scoreboard first when Jack Legg
deflected the puck past Exeter goal-
ie Clint McCann.
Scott Schiedel had two good
chances for the Hawks in the open-
ing period but couldn't click.
Exeter tied it up on the power-
play when Cousineau let go with a
wrist shot. It was 2-1 for the visi-
tors when Jim Dickins was left
alone at the side of the net.
Todd Hayter tied it for the Irish
as the -teams headed into the second
break even and just 25 seconds into
the third frame brother Tim sur-
prised the Hawks and made it 3-2.
"I just walked in front and put it
in the net. I thought he (McCann)
had it when he slid across but I got
it under him," said Tim Hayter.
He was ejected from his second
straight game when he squared off
with Exeter's big rookie defence -
man John Bell who also hit the
showehrs early. y
"We °were ready," said Pratt of
Hayter's quick goal. "Clint just
made a bad mistake."
At 14:26 Shackleton tied it up,
setting the stage for Clark's winner.
The game was a physical one
from the opening faceoff and refer-
ee Paul Petrie also ejected Lucan's
Jamie Pearce and Scott Schiedel for
fighting although they simply
grabbed each other in a bear hug at
centre ice.
"That's the key to beating them,"
said Pratt of the aggressive game.
"That's how we beat them before."
Needham didn't agree and
thought the game should have had
more hitting.
"I thought it would be more phys-
ical than it was. It was pretty calm."
,eucky charms: Lucan's Jon
McEachern played a strong game
and had several breakaways. On
one he had to be hauled down from
behind to prevent a goal...Assistant
captain Rick Weishar returned to
the Irish lineup after being out sev-
eral weeks with an inju-
ry ..Lambeth came to town on
Wednesday and the Irish square off
against the Lakers of Pon Stanley
next week.
Hauled down - Exeter's Dave Dalrymple wasn't letting Jason Wilson
get past him.

Two days before
' Santa scooted down
the chimney, the Exeter Mo-
hawks were busy giving them-
selves a Christmas present.
They beat the Chatham Ma-
roons on their own turf, ending a
long road stand which lasted
four games. Faithful followers
cheered, as they always do. a
One of the best Senior 'A' hockey teams are raved up and enjoy-
ing another fine hockey season.
But Mohawks president Gabby Mol had to deliver some disturb-
ing news to. me the other day when he popped into the office here
fora chat.
There will be no Senior 'A' hockey tournament January 18-20,
i don't know about everyone else, but I was looking forward to it.
Although the Mohawks attendance needs a shot in the arm right
now for its regular season games, there is no doubt in my mind this
tournament would have had lots of fans. .
Mol said the local executive was trying to get eight teams, same
as last year. But they could only get four clubs to participate; Exet-
er,Lakeshore (Port Elgin), Durham and Ingersoll.
"We got a lot of excuses, some just said no," said Mol.
One reason given was that it was too costly. That's the same rea-
son the Exeter Hawks had to cancel their Junior 'D' tournament.
Dollars and cents, just aren't available.
Mol said that even one team complained about the prize money at
the senior event. He reported top prize would have been $1,000,
second, $600; and third, $500.
"`Several executive members did a lot of work to get this off the
ground, and now it's a no go.
"It's the only senior tournament around, we're very disappointed.
John Pryde worked very hard, he tried andtried," said Mol.
This Sunday the Mohawks will be hosting one of the few teams
which have beaten them this year, the Aylmer Hornets. Mol has in-
dicated this it Family Night, which means the whole gang can get in
for $5. There will be prizes, and as always, exciting hockey.
Although the tournament has been cancelled, the Mohawks are
looking to face a high calibre team in an exhibition game. Mol sug-
gested perhaps a university squad.
