EXETER - A d the grand total is $26.71 for 118.14 worth of grdcerics. How did the Leibolds do it? With $91.43 in coupon sav- ings including $10.82 saved on sale items. Diane Lcibold of Crediton, along with her. spouse David Gib- son and two'of her children Sa- mantha and Christopher, made a special trip to the supermarket on Friday afternoon. Armed with a fistful of coupons, the Leibolds set out to see how much they could save on one tri to the grocery store - in the end almost everything in the cart was free. It was the first time the Leibolds set out on such a venture and apart ' from using the coupon's as a major cost -saver, Leibold wanted to prove collecting and trading cou- pons is a good idea. The cart was crammed just about everything a family needs for sustenance including fruit juice, poultry, Rice-n-Roni, Coca Cola, canned vegetables and Jello 'nixes. Many of Leibold's coup• ons or 'get one free' vouchers had been saved or sent for over the last few months. Many cash refunds on purchased goods can only be re- ceived by sending a facsimile of the code on a refund form. Unfor- tunately the proper forms are not always available at the local super- market, she said. Leibold finds many of her cou- pons in newspapers, flyers, mailers and stores. There is another way to save with merchandise labels - Leibold has won several items by saving the Universal Price Codes off many goods including a 'trip to the Mol - son Indy in Toronto including $120, gas vouchers, $300 spending money as well as three days -at the Sutton Place and pit box seats. This year, she won a Canon 35 mm camera valued at $200 by sending in UPCs. Leibold believes a consumer should enter as many.product con- tests or draws as possible because entering is virtually free. Leibold's key to savings success has been purchasing advertized spe- cials as much as possible - and the addition of coupon -use helps her save big. 'bold sai; onrr of a most irn- Po t taCiar when. sending in for cash' rebates is to' keep the projects' identified by sending in the proof - of -purchase or labels. Leibold says another factor to her success in the money savings de- partment is simply that she "loves • to shop", and often finds herself de- lighted with the amount of money she is able to save on a product. Leibold is interested in starting a Crediton and area coupon club. She was involved in one in London, but hasn't been able to keep regular contact with them since September. She says she has always collected coupons, but decided to *o full- time with it this year, adding, "In this day and age, you have to save." Leibold believes starting an area coupon club would provide local people with a good opportunity to socialize and save. There are a number of ways to profit from coupons including con- tests, cashback offers and collect- ing Universal Price Codes of cer- tain products for money. Over 140 coupon offers* expired on December 31, and Leibold says there are many more to take advan- tage of and with a networking sys- tem the likelihood of big savings is possible. Leibold noted with the pressing recession, coupons can take an im- pressive dent off a grocery bill's tal- ly. "You can take 20 to 25 percent off your bill without even working that hard for it," she said. Leibold claims she currently saves about 50 percent by collect- ing coupons and is now in the pro- cess of recruiting the discount -wise fora coupon club to be based outeof her Crediton home. As the Leibold children helped box the groceries, the Leibolds checked out a new item on the mar- ket with a cash rebate - the green bulb. .z.t .c_• _4_ • Diane Leif checks the each week fo discounts an sales.
