The company was begun by a Florida husband and wife team in 1981. Karen Hefty, a former teacher, came up with the concept of per- sonalized books as a way to moti- vate children to read, and to impart a sense of self-worth. John Hefty devised the procedure of printing and binding pages between hard covers in minutes. Taylor had worked as an artist at AgriPress in Hensall from 1981 un- til 1987.
