Brucellosis Act out
TORONTO - The Brucellosis
Act has been repealed. A bill to re-
peal the act received royal assent
December 6, 1989.
Brucellosis is a bacterial disease
of cattle, which causes abortion and
high infertility in cattle. Through a
federal -provincial program of vac-
cinations and testing the once -
prevalent, costly disease has been
eradicated.
Since Ontario has been brucello-
sis -free since 1985,.the Brucellosis
Act is no longer required. Agricul-
ture Canada continues to provide
livestock owners with a national
vaccination program, and brucello-
sis is on the federal list of reporta-
ble diseases.
Most of the diseases on Agricul-
ture Canada's reportable list have
been eradicated, but if a veterinari-
an suspects that an animal has one
of those reportable diseases, he or
she is obliged to notify the proper
authorities.
To discuss new tax
GUELPH - The impact of the
goods and services tax on the food
industry is one of the topics to be
discussed in January at the annual

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food.
The conferences run January 2, 3,
4 and 11 at Guelph's John McCrae

ing will look at rhythms of repro-
duction, deer health and disease
control.
The January 3 program will in-
clude morning sessions on dairy
farming and nitrogen management
and afternoon sessions on beef
management, and weather and wa-
ter management. Participants in the
latter session will discuss the his-
torical variations in Ontario farm-
ing weather and the effect of
mulches on crops.
On January 4, participants will
• discuss field crops in the morning
session and the safety of food in the
afternoon. A concurrent workshop
