HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1989-12-20, Page 451 Christmas concert at Stanley Complex By Joan Beierling VARNA - Sunday, December 17 was the Third Sunday of Advent celebrating the Kingdom (King of Kings, Lord of Lords) by lighting of the candle. Debra and Don Rathwell and boys took pan in the ' Children's sharing and prayer time, explaining why we light the Kingdom Candle. Rev. Sam -Parker's Message was on the "King and the Kingdom". After the service the congrega- tion and Sunday School moved to the Stanley Complex for lunch and Church Christmas Concert. Sunday School Superintendent Joe Laurie opened the concert with a warm welcome and thank you to everyone. He then called on the Mounts (The Brass Bunch) who played "Here Comes Sauna Claus". "Joy to the World", "Good Kin§ Wenceslas", "Away in the Manger and "We Wish You a Merry Christ- mas". The entire Sunday School then revealed the Mystery of the Un- solved Bells. The Paper Bells are symbols that remind everyone that when we. work and worship in uni- ty, we sound harmony as if the bells were ringing. Help us keep Car fire - The interior of this 1980 Old Cutlass, driven by Scott Gaiser of Crediton, burned Saturday on Main Street in Exeter Saturday. Gaiser was driving north -when he saw smoke and pulled over when the Exeter Fire Department was called. The car was totally destroyed. Hodge Electric Ltd. 1Centrolla 22e-6679 trsit►uletrss►wt Bowling news By Ron Dann ZURICH - Grand Bend's Jean Dann, having successfully quali- fied for the 10th time to compete in the OV Open Ontario five -pin bowling championships, will now have her achievement officially recognized with a 10-ycar award presented by the Ontario Five -Pine Bowlers Association at the Ontario OV Open Championships April 11 to 14 at Hamilton. She is a Zurich Five Pin Bowlers Association member and will be part of the Bluewater five pin asso- ciation's sso-ciation's ladies team. The only other Zurich Five Pin Association member previously recognized by the Ontario Five -pin Bowlers Association is Ron Dann, who was presented with the 15 - year award at the 1989 Ontario OV Open. The house round of the OV Sun - bowl is now underway in Ontario Five Pine Bowlers Association leagues across the province. This tournament is for bowlers of 210 - and -below averages on a pins - over -average format. All Zurich Five Pin Association leagues are now competing and one in five will advance to OV Sunbowl zone finals on February 14 in a Bluewater Association bowling center designated by the Ontario Five Pin Bowlers Associa- tibn. . The final week of the Hiram Walker Special Old High -Low Doubles house round has now been completed by the Zurich Five -Pin Association and all dou- bles teams that beat their com- bined average over six weeks in league play will now advance to the Hiram Walker Special Old zone finals January 14. 1 1 1 1 1 i 1 1 1 1 1L the Christ of Christmas in our hearts today and always. Jesus was born on Christmas Day! Christmas Carols were sung throughout the re- cital. Michael Stephenson and Darcy and Danny Rathwell then played the spoons to the rhythm of "Jingle Bells". Meggin Reid played the pia- no. Michael and Mathew Groot (grandsons of Bill and Joyce Dow - son) stole the show with their reci- tations. Raymond Beierling humored eve- ryone with a Santa Elf joke. Jason Beierling, along with Andrew, Gra- ham and Cameron Laurie, sang a Santa Song. Valerie Laurie played a song on the piano. Barbara Ann Parker and Heather Laurie played "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" on their flutes and Heather Laurie then favored every- one with a number on the piano. Heather Beierling recited a poem "Why Can't Christmas be Every- day".. Mary Coultis arid Amanda Elliot sang "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Then came some adult entertain- mentstarting with Ralph' Stephen- son playing piano, Jack Simmons on thle banjo, and Adam Wilson and George Dowson with their fid- dles. - Lcisa Stephenson, Deb Rathwell and Brenda Consitt entertained eve- ryone by clogging to "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", "Jingle Bells" and "I Believe in Santa". The Jolly Old Fellow himself showed up af- ter the Sunday School Children sang Jingle Bells, and passed out gifts to the children. Congratulations to Harvey and Louise (Ivanchcnko) Hayter, just married on Saturday, December 16 with Rev. Parker performing the ceremony. To all my readers this holiday season, I wish you a very Merry Ch -stmas and a Healthy, Happy and Blessed New Year in 1990. Coming events Next Sunday, December 24 is Advent IV Services of Worship. Wednesday, December 20 Vama- Goshen's joint Christmas Candle- light Service will be held at Varna Church at 7:30 p.m. Adults please bring a candle in an adequate can- dle holder. Come and celebrate Je- sus's birth! The offering will go to the International Bible Mission. A birthday party to follow! Thursday, December 21 the Youth Group Christmas Party will start with skating in Bayfield from 5-6 p.m., S3 a person. Hot dog sup- per to follow after at the manse a.. 6:30. Bring your own pop and chips! The word is out that New Year's Eve tickets for the Stanley Town- ship's Complex are nearly all sold out. Anyone still wanting one should contact one of the Rcc Com- mittee Members as soon as possi- ble. Bingo Wednesday, December 13 was the Annual Stanley Township Bin- go held at the Complex. Lucky winners of turkeys were Joan Beierling, Alice Buchanan, Bob Broadfoot, Margaret Hayter, Sandra Johnson, •Bertha Taylor, June. De Ruyter two, Gladys Tel- ford, Brenda Consitt, Doug McAsh, Darryn McAsh, Joanne Consitt, and Evelyn McDonald. Consolation prizes of S5 went to Esthcr Cante- Ion, Mildred McAsh, Jean Taylor, and Marg Reid. The four share -the -wealth win- ners went to Dorothy Jesson; Gail Turner; a split between Julie Web- ster and•June DeRuytcr, and Sharon Camohan. Doug McAsh was the winner of the door prize.
