FWIO touches rural life
GUELPH - Showing that it is an
organization that touches on many
aspects that affects life in rural On-
tario, FWIO recently completed its
annual meeting in Guelph.
The new president is Peggy
Knapp Georgetown who is as well,
a government appointee to the On-
tario Vctcrinary Association and
the new President -Elect is Marg
Eberle, Highgate, who is President
of the Kent Farm Safety Associa-
tion and was instrumental in start-
ing Ridge Kids, a rural daycare
centre.
The life skills courses that use to
he taught by OMAF are really
missed by WI members, so FWIO
is entering into a two year contract
with two former Rural Organiza-
tional Specialists who have devel-
oped programs which provide and
develop good family life skills,
they have workshops, manuals and
teaching aids ready and are willing
to deliver these across the province
with FWIO involvement.
F V1O is having a leadership
workshop. Forms, Facts and Fig-
ures which will develop administra-
tive skills for farm women, in Janu-
ary. As well the Board Directors
wcrc updated on the FWIO Confer-
ence to be held in Ottawa in June,
entitled Women and the Environ-
ment -the challenge is now. This
conference with its international
perspective will deal with the envi-
ronment from the person to the
world.
Rita Burak, Deputy Minister of
Agriculture addressed the annual
meeting listing some of the con-
cerns that have come up as a result
of the series of meetings on the
OMAF discussion paper Towards
2000 - Trends and Influences. One
of the concerns of the FWIO Board
Directors to the Deputy Minister
was the eating up of valuable farm
land through severances. They
were told that more farm ;land is
lost through severancs"thian is tak-
en through urban spread.
Brigid Pykc, as one of her First
duties after being re-elected Presi-
dent of Ontario Federation of Agri-
culture addressed thc FWIO annual
meeting discussing some of the
problems facing the farming com-
munity in Ontario and how by the
two organizations developing a
closer working relationship at all
levels some of these problems can
be solved.
Women's Institute in England
were founded by a Canadian wom-
an Mrs. Alfred Wau 75 years ago.
This has now grown to a very large
and active organization including
the Queen and several members of
the Royal family as members. Next
year a delegation from Ontario will
be part of their celebrations but
also at the same time promoting
the various Ontario agricultural
products.
