Between November 23 and 29 this year, somebody brokc open the back door to a residence in Hay Township. Once insidc, the culprits took many items, includ- ing 60 to 80 collector spoons, watches, liquor, silverware, a microwave oven and frozen chickens and beef. On February 26, 1988 a Pontiac Parisienne was left on thc side of the road one mile south of Varna. The vehicle broke down and be- tween 11 p.m. that night and 10:30 the next morning the rear passenger window on the driver's side was broken and a stereo pried from the vehicle. The new president is Peggy Knapp Georgetown who is as well, a government appointee to the On- tario Vctcrinary Association and the new President -Elect is Marg Eberle, Highgate, who is President of the Kent Farm Safety Associa- tion and was instrumental in start- ing Ridge Kids, a rural daycare centre. The life skills courses that use to he taught by OMAF are really missed by WI members, so FWIO is entering into a two year contract with two former Rural Organiza- tional Specialists who have devel- oped programs which provide and develop good family life skills, they have workshops, manuals and teaching aids ready and are willing to deliver these across the province with FWIO involvement. F V1O is having a leadership workshop. Forms, Facts and Fig- ures which will develop administra- tive skills for farm women, in Janu- ary. As well the Board Directors wcrc updated on the FWIO Confer- ence to be held in Ottawa in June, entitled Women and the Environ- ment -the challenge is now. This conference with its international perspective will deal with the envi- ronment from the person to the world. Rita Burak, Deputy Minister of Agriculture addressed the annual meeting listing some of the con- cerns that have come up as a result of the series of meetings on the OMAF discussion paper Towards 2000 - Trends and Influences. One of the concerns of the FWIO Board Directors to the Deputy Minister was the eating up of valuable farm land through severances. They were told that more farm ;land is lost through severancs"thian is tak- en through urban spread. Brigid Pykc, as one of her First duties after being re-elected Presi- dent of Ontario Federation of Agri- culture addressed thc FWIO annual meeting discussing some of the problems facing the farming com- munity in Ontario and how by the two organizations developing a closer working relationship at all levels some of these problems can be solved. Women's Institute in England were founded by a Canadian wom- an Mrs. Alfred Wau 75 years ago. This has now grown to a very large and active organization including the Queen and several members of the Royal family as members. Next year a delegation from Ontario will be part of their celebrations but also at the same time promoting the various Ontario agricultural products.
