Smart hockey video TORONTO - Hockey teams across Ontario will soon receive an important gift in the mail: the "Smart HOckey" video promoting safe, clean hockey. The provincial government will provide $90,000 to mail the video to amateur hockey teams with players 11 years and older. the an- nouncement was made at the Hock- ey Hall of Fame by Ed Fulton, Par- liamentary Assistant to Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recrea- tion Ken Black. "Smart Hockey" features former Christmas party By Roberta Walker CLINTON - The three Associa- tions for the Mentally Handicapped in Huron County, from Wingham, Goderich and South Huron, joined together to organize a Christmas Party for the handicapped children, aged 18 years and under, on De- cember 9, at the Clinton Town Hall. About 80 children and their families, board members and sup- port workers attended this First An- nual party. Special entertainment for the af- ternoon was provided by Michael Parks, a teacher from Hullett- Central in Londcsboro, who sang some very different and hilarious children's songs while strumming away on his banjo. Floyd Herman provide. great music on piano. Santa Claus and his helpers were from Algarva #168, Order of the Alhambra, dedicated to helping the mentally handicapped. They pre- sented each child with a candy bag, and each child got to meet Santa, of course. The Grand Commander, Ron Van Bree, presented Liz Fier - man and Lisa Van Huysen, Family Support and School Resource workers, with a cheque for the Toy Library for $200. Roberta Walker presented a cheque for $140 for the Toy Library from an Ecumenical Christmas Church Service, from the ladies in Grand Bend churches. There was lots of fun and excite- ment for all, and there will definite- ly be a Christmas Party next year, everyone agreed. National Hockey League goal - scoring champion Mike Bossy, who says most disabling hockey injuries occur after players hit their opponents from behind into the boards. Since 1981, more than 140 On- tario players have become perma- nently crippled with neck and spi- nal cord injuries after being hit head -first into the boards. "Smart Hockey" promotes clean, . safe hockey and offers prevention tips to eliminate these unneccesary in- juries. "We arc proud of our hockey her- itage but recognize it can be a high-risk sport," Fulton said. "The "Smart Hockey" video will help us reach our common goal of reducing injuries in hockey." "Smart Hockey" is part of the Ministry's long-term strategy to re- duce injuries in sports, recreation and fitness activities in Ontario. gr :4i 94ctbt% Ginn Invites you to a Getaway New Year's Gala Lavish presidents buffet.
