Mohawks lose third straight
EXETER - The Exeter Mo-
hawks' first loss of the season last
Sunday night, December 3 against
Dorchester has now turned into a
three -game losing streak, after the
once -unbeatable scoring machine
dropped a pair of games to the
Chatham Varco Maroons last week.
Sunday night at the Rec Centre,
the Mohawks fell behind 2-0 after
one period, and couldn't come
back. They eventually lost 5-2.
Last Wednesday night, the Mo-
hawks travelled to Chatham to play
the new and improved Maroons
with only 10 skaters. Although out -
shooting them 42-28 in the game,
the Mohawks came away with a
10-4 loss, their second -straight set-
back, which was upped to three
Sunday.
The Mohawks outshot the Ma-
roons in both contests but had a
tough time beating new Chatham
netminder Jim Tapak.
"They were just better than we
were. Their goalie stood on his
head to beat us but they were just
better," said Mohawks' coach Dave
Revington, who was at a loss trying
to pinpoint the exact reason for the
team's sudden downfall.
"It's not just one guy making mis-
takes, it's everyone. I don't think it
is fair to point fingers at just one
guy. We might have had it too easy
for too long. We just have to start
putting in an application of things
we worked on practice," said Rev-
ington after Sunday's defeat.
The Mohawks were behind 3-0
before finally getting on the board
in'the second period Sunday.
Al Gates netted a power -play
marker from Les Arts at 4:31 of the
second and Joe Scherer picked u
the second Exeter goal, from Jeff
Warren and Jack Thornton later in
the second making the score 3-2.
It stayed that way until 16:07 of
the third when Chatham connected
for a power -play tally and added
another at 18:35 to make it a 5-2 fi-
nal.
Despite outshooting the Maroons,
the Mohawks took too many penal-
ties at crucial times when they were
trying to mount a comeback.

The Maroons came into last
Wednesday's game with a new
coach, general manager, goaltender
and one new player since the previ-
ous time the Mohawks faced Chat-
ham.
The Maroons played well and
built a 3-0 lead after the opening
period and helds a 6-3 advantage
after the second. They also pumped
in four markers in the final period
while holding the Mohawks to just
one in the last 20 minutes.
The Mohawks had Randy Bailey
back in the lineup after he missed
seven games because of a suspen-
sion and Jeff Carr also played de-
spite suffering an eye injury in
Dunnville last Thursday night.
The Mohawks were down 5-0 in
this game before finally getting on
the board with just less than five
minutes to play in the second peri-
od. They scored three straight goals
to cut the lead to 5-3 before Chat-
ham got one to close out the period.
Scoring in the second period for
the Mohawks were; Bailey from
Gord Brooks and Jeff Shipley,
Shipley from Jeff Warren and
Quincy Wilker from Gates and
Warren.
Dave Randerson struck from
Wilker just nine second into the
third to cut the lead to 6-4, but the
Maroons scored thefinal four goals
