EXETER - Amidst the noise,
hustle and bustle at South Huron
District High School is u very busy
group of young people, the CLN
Class of Donna Webster.
This is the Challenging Learning
Needs room for teens with mental
or physical handicaps . Their prob-
lems don't prevent them from be-
coming involved in the life of the
school, however. The students help
with school attendance sheets for
instance, and Terri Ann Kerr is on
the Senior Girls Intramural Volley-
ball team.
Each student is integrated into
one or more subjects each day, and
many are earning academic credits.
There are 11 young people en-
rolled, from age 15' to 22 years with
a few more students coming in for
day programs. Some students are
integrated mainly to improve their
social skills and learning social
graces from their peers.
Friday, the students formedan ef-
ficient assembly line to make 200
candy bags for the Handicapped
Children's Christmas Party the
next day m Clinton.
They helped members of the
Children's Services Committee bag
the apples, oranges, bulk candy and
candy canes, then tie a curly ribbon
around each one.
The classroom contains a refrig-
erator, microwave and stove. They
use these appliances to bake pies,
from scratch.
With the money they've earned
from baking these pies, they fi-
nanced a Christmas dinner together
out at a local restaurant.
Teacher Donna Webster also
points out that this teaches them
the elements of planning, buying,
banking, measuring, reading skills
and cashing checks, all vital life
skills.
Each student has work experience
out in the community, too, for one.,
day a week for 14 to 20 weeks or
every other day for one month.
Several are involved in the stu-
dent Co-op Program.
Webster is very grateful to the
business community of Exeter for
their willingness to help these
young people become participating
citizens.

School was packing candy and fruit on Friday afternoon for Satur-
