The Federation's Provincial Board has confirmed its support for sup- ply management as a marketing tool for commodity groups that wish to use it. The CFFO views the recent rul- ing by a panel of the General Agreement on Trade and Traffic (GATT), refusing to recognize ice cream and yogurt as "like products' to milk, as a serious undermining of the ability of Canadian farmers to operate supply management sys- tems within the present GATT rules. The Federation want the GATT Article XI, intended to enable sup- ply management, redefined. "Canadian farmers, who have ac- cepted discipline at home should not be subjected to an undisciplined world market." The Federation says in a statement, "A strengthened GATT Article XI that enables disci- plined Canadian markets such as milk and poultry is primary and es- sential to any agreement about agri- culture in the GATT." The'Federation supports the goal of winning access to world markets for fruits, grain, red meats and vege- tables but not at the'expense of Ca- nadian farmers who have accepted disciplined markets at home.
