Hawks' offence explodes WELLESLEY - After being held to just two goals Friday night in Mitchell -against the Hawks, losing 4-2, the Exeter Hawks exploded to score 13 Saturday night and whipped the Wellesley Applejacks 13-6 in Wellesley. The win keeps the Hawks in third place, two points ahead .of the Ap- plejacks, who would have slipped into a tic for third with a win. In the hawks' offensive explo- sion they fired a total of 64 shots at two Wellesley goalies, 13 of than finding their mark. The Hawks pep- pered starting.goalie Derek Switzer with 29 in the first period alone, with five going into • the net. They took 14 shots in the middle period on Switzer and four more goals on 21 shots in the final period on re- - placcment Jcff Gerber. - Exeter nctmindcr Clint McCann - stopped 40 of 46 shots. - Defenceman - David Dalrymple and Jcan Paul Cousincau led the way with hat tricks each, followed by Doug Clark and Scott Taylor, who netted a pair. The turning point- in the game came in the second period with Ex- eter leading 2-0, Thamesford's Ryan Beckett was called for a five- minute slashing penalty and Exeter - responded with three power -play goals. McCann led the way with four goals, followed by a pair from Snell and singles went to DeBruyn, Steve Stire and Dietrich. Chris McDonald and McCann also had a pair of assists while An- drew Hem, Matt Godbolt, Mike Burton and Dietrich had one each. Next game for the Pcc Wces will be tonight, Wednesday, when Strathroy will be at the Rcc Centre. It was also learned that Derek Shackleton will miss an additional three weeks after injuring his ankle at a recent practice. He has been out of the lineup for several weeks already with a broken hand and was expected back around Christmas. He will likely be gone now until mid-January. The first period of Friday's game was scoreless, and each team scored once in the second period. Mitchell broke open the close game with three tallies in the third. The Hawks had several good scoring chances to take the lead late in the sccond period, they hit two goal posts and the cross bar but couldn't get one past Mitchell goal- ie -Dennis Scherbarth when they needed to. Cousincau netted both goals for Exctcr, one at 7:20 of the second from Clark and Alan Blommaert to give Exeter a short-lived 1-0 lead and one mid -way through the third period, from Clark, to make_ tie the game briefly at 2-2. Mitchell took the lead for good at 13:50 of the third and and added an insurance goal with just over a min- ute to play, when Campbell went down with his injury. Next game for the Hawks will be Friday night when they will try for revenge on Mitchell when the other Hawks travel to the South Huron Rcc Centre for an 8:30 p.m. game. Times -Advocate, December 6, 1989 Page 21 Zurich bowlers raise funds for M.D. ZURICH - Greg Quick, 10 -year- old bantam member of Town and Country's Saturday morning Y.B.C. league has raised $710.75 for the Youth Bowling Council of Ontario's Bowl for Muscular Dys- trophy. He was presented with an award of a keyboard Saturday for earning the most money of all Zurich Y.B.C. bowlers. Six year-old Matthew Little- child, in the pee wee division, earned the second most by raising S212.50 and also received an award. Twelve other bowlers brought the total to S1,221.52 for a new record earned by Zurich's Y.B.C. howlers on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. Zurich Town and Country Five - Pin Bowlers Association will be represented by 20 or more of its members in the OV Open Blucwa- ter Five -Pin Association's zone rolloff commencing -this Sunday, 10 a.m., at Wingham and Moles- worth. Hensall's Tim Wilcox won two awards last Tuesday night when he rolled a 717 triple, including a 323 single, for the Signs and Shirts team in the men's league. As a member of the Zurich Five - Pin Association, he earned his sin- gles. award by bowling 150 pins over his 173 league average and the triples award with 198 pins above his average under Ontario Five Pin Association and Canadi- an Association rules.
