EXETER - The Mohawks aren't
perfect.
After playing one of their bcst
games of the year, winning Thurs-
day night in Dunnville 8-2, the Ex-
eter Mohawks followed it up with
one of their worst Sunday night suf-
fering their first loss after 12
straight wins, losing 7-4 to the Dor-
chester Dolphins at the South Hu-
ron Rec Centre.
The Mohawks played a very solid
game Thursday night in Dunnville.
They made the three-hour trip with
a full squad, found a cure for the so
called "Dunnville flu" and beat the
third-place Mudcats for the second -
straight time. They lacked the same
intensity Sunday night as they
turned in a lackluster performance
against Dorchester.
Other teams in the Southern Scn-
ior A league have made the trip to
Dunnville with slightly less than a
full squad with guys calling in sick,
not wanting to make the long trip.
As a result were usually walked on
by the Mudcats. The Mohawks
scored five quick goals, took the
Dunnville crowd out of the game,
and cruised to an easy win.
Al Gates had a hat trick in the
first period for the Mohawks, while
singles were notched by Joe Scher-
er, Greg Snyder, Kris Bedard, Bill
Glover and Quincy Wilker.
Scherer also set up three othcr

goals, Bedard and Glover each had
two assists and singles went to
Snyder, Gates, Jeff McClenaghan,
Gord Brooks, Mark Soehncr and
goaltender Rick Pikul.
The Mohawks held a slight ad-
vantage in shots on goal but also
got a strong game from Pikul be-
tween the pipes, who was beaten
only on two occasions in the first
period.
The Mohawks lost the services of
Jeff Carr in the second period, who
left the game after being poked in
the eye by a Dunnville player. He
missed Sunday's game and will
likely be out another week.
Barry Baynham, Bedard, Dale
Gibbon, and McClenaghan wcre all
thrown .out of the game by the ref-
eree for not going directly to the
bench in the second period when
the Mohawks' Jack Thornton and
Dunnville's Mike Kelly were in-
volved in fisticuffs.
Dorchester 7 Exeter 4
After 12 straight wins to start the
season, the 13th game proved to be
unluckly as the Mohawks tasted de-
feat for the first time Sunday night.
"We seemed really tired out
there. We didn't pass or check well
and seemed to be a step away, "
said Mohawk coach Dave Reving-
ton:
"Some nights you just don't -play
well and tonight was just •one of
those nights. We played bad and
got beat," he added.
The Mohawks took an early two -
goal lead but the Dolphins came
back to tie before the fust intermis-
sion.
Scherer got Exeter on the board
with a goal from Bedard at 5:26
and Wilker made it 2-0 just over
three minutes later, after he was set
up by Gibbon and Dave Randerson.
The Dolphins took advantage of a
double minor called to Exeter's
Glover for elbowing and cross
checking late in the first period. Joe
Dcnowski scored while Glover was
serving the first penalty and Jeff
McKay tied the game while Glover
was serving his cross-checking mi-
nor.
It stayed that way until 1:53 of
the second when Jeff Shipley gave
Exeter its one -goal lead back after
blasting an unassisted goal.
Dorchester tied the game again
two minutes later and took the lead
for good about a minute after that.
It was the first time the Mohawks
had been behind in a game.
Dorchester fired two more quick
goals 44 seconds apart six minutes
into the third to make it a 6-3 game.
Scherer blasted a slap shot off a,
face-off won by Shipley with just
more than four minutes left, but the
Dolphins added an empty-neuer
with seven seconds on the clock to
seal the victory.
In addition to missing Carr in
Sunday's game, the Mohawks were
without the services of Paul Barton,
who injured his shoulder in Dunn-
ville, Mark Soehner, who was not
at the game, Thornton, who was
serving a one -game suspension for
instigating the tight in Dunnville,
Al Gates, who could not make it to
the game because of the weather,
and Randy Bailey, who was serving
the last of his seven -game suspen-
sion, which he received November
5.
In addition, they Lost the services
of dcfenceman Jeff McClenaghan
in the fust period after he was acci-
dentally struck in the tate by team-
mate Dale Timmerman's stick. The
rugged player lost four teeth as a
result.
Next action for the Mohawks will
be tonight, in Chatham against the
Varco Maroons at 8:00 p.m. Satur-
day's game in Lambeth against the
Flyers has been postponed to a later
date.
The next home game will be Sun-
day night at 7:30 p.m., when Chat-
ham will be at the SHRC. It will be
Hat Night and Food Bank Night.
Everyone attending the game is
asked to bring a can of food to be
donated to the Huron, County
Christmas Bureau.
"You're not going anywhere," - This is what Mark.Soehner left, of
the Exeter Mohawks seems to be telling Dave Kelly of the Dunnville
Mudcats, as Soehner wraps both arms around Kelly keeping him to
the ice, during their game Thursday night in Dunnville. The Mohawks
won that game 8-2, but lost Sunday night at home to the Dorchester
Dolphins.

Hockey Panthers
open with split
By Michelle Ellison
EXETER - South Huron District
High School's hockey Panthers split
games this week as they opened
their season at home against Gode-
rich on Wednesday and in Seaforth
on Friday.
The Panthers had little difficulty
taking the 4-2 victory over the Vi-
kings.
Chris Gardner put South Huron
on the board at 11:24. Randy Hoff-
man potted one at 10:23 from Henri
DeBruyn to give the Panthers a 2-0
lead.
But the Vikings responded 13
seconds later and the score stood at
2-1 after the first frame. .
The second period was all Pan-
thers as Jason Heywood and Fred
Godbolt each put one past the
Goderich goaltender at 1u:11 ana
8:05 respectively.
In the third period, with the Pan
thers spending a lot of time in the
penalty box, the Vikings managed
one more goal but it was too late
and the locals claimed their first
victory.
Richard Phillips was in net for
the Panthers.
Unfortunately, the short winning
streak ended as SH took a disap-
pointing 3-0 defeat to Seaforth.
The Golden Bears took the three-
point lead by the end of the second
period and no scoring took place in
the final frame.
Coach, Pete Heeney, feels his
team may have been too confident
as they entered the game and their
opponents caught them off guard.
