Shipka woman has been collecting dolls for 30 years
By Annie Morenz
SHIPKA - Recently I was gifted
with another doll for my ever grow-
ing collection that now numbers
over 100. I have dolls from more
than 40 countries.
This latest one is a Cornish Bal
Maiden, from Wales, given to me
by a cousin. Information with her
tells me, "Most of the mine work
in connection with the dressing of
un and copper ores, which was too
heavy for the children, was given to
older women and girls known as
'bal maidens', great number of
whom were always employed on
the surface of Cornish un mines.
The work of 'spoiling' or breaking
up the stones and Targe rocks, was
performed by the women with long=
handled hammers, standing out-of-
doors."
My doll collecting began more
than 25 years ago. We used to have

a little great niece who liked to
come here for holidays. At that
time a pen pal in Holland had writ-
ten me to ask if I would send her an
Indian or Eskimo doll from Canada
for her friend's little girl, and asked
what I'd like in return, so I asked
her to send a Dutch doll for my
little niece to play with.
Before this transaction took place
our little niece was killed in a car
accident. From then on my doll col-
lection boomeranged: as my pen
pals in many counties heard this
story they wanted to send me dolls
from their countries. I always sent
something in exchange. Some
asked for dolls of Canada.
Some unusual dolls I have are a
tiny one made of beads, a bread
dough doll, one of yarn, corn husk
and voo doo dolls, and two tiny
miniature porcelain ones about 1
inch high, also a dried apple doll.
Some special ones include one
from Czechoslovakia. A Holland
pen pal now deceased was visiting
that country in 1968, the very day
the Russians took over the country.
She told me if she had been caught
taking it out of the country she
would have been in real trouble.
Another special one is from Rus-
sia, a wooden doll, with four small-
er ones that all fit into one. My
next door neighl ur, Annie Ziel-
man, was born in Russia, so I
named the mother after her, and the
four small ones are named after her
four daughters, Ruth, Susie, Deb-
bie and Angie.
I keep my dolls in plastic bags,
on a green felt covered board on the
wall. Each one is ticketed as to

who sent it and date received. I've
always loved dolls and its been an
interesting hobby. Most of my
dolls are in National dress and are 7
to 10 inches tall.
Hugh collects horses, and they
number over 60 at the present
time.
When our son Bill was home he
collected coins, and our grand-
daughter Persephone collects
turtles.
