HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1989-11-29, Page 7• Christmas at Lambton Museum LAMBTON COUNTY - On Sunday, December 10, from 1 un- til 4 p.m. the Lambton Heritage Museum will be filled with the sights and sounds of Christmas PTA banquet at Clinton school CLINTON - The annual Parent- Teacher Association Banquet and General meeting of the Clinton and " District Christian School was held on November 10 in the school gym. President Roele Verburg welcomed abdut 110 guests. Then it was time to eat! The meal was put on by the dinner committee of the P.T.A. and consisted of Indo- nesian Cuisine with tropical fruit punch and delightful fruit salad dessert. Everyone thoroughly en- joyed this; After this brief break Sharon Parker entertained us with some nice songs, accompanying herself on the piano. We listened to speakers Dan Cou- chi and Calvin Davies, both music teachers in London High Schools. Their theme was "Todays Music - Biblical and Secular". Docs today's popular rock music fit in the Chris- tian homes? Do your children know what they are listening to, just the peppy beat or do they know the lyr- ics as well? Not all of it is suitable for our youngsters for certain! Mr. Couchi showed some glimps- es of music videos. Much of it was not impressive. The Clinton and Di rict School Parent-Teacher Association is rep- resented with delegates from the following areas: Clinton, Blyth, Va- nastra, Goderich, and Exeter, along with three school staff members. Letters to Santa EXETER - The Exeter Post Of- fice will be among the participants in this year's Exeter Santa Claus pa- rade on December 2. On display in the parade will be a Canada Post vehicle, complete with the new logo and corporate colors which were introduced this spring. Letters may be given to Santa's helpers, the Exeter Girl Guides, ac- companying the vehicle who will take the letters directly to Santa Claus. Children are asked to ensure they include their name and return ad- dre.s, along with their postal code so that Santa can provide them with a speedy reply. As in past years, Santa's address is: Santa Claus North Pole Canada HOH OHO Postal employees plus Canada Post retirees in hundreds of post of- fices large and small across south- western Ontario are devoting much of their spare time to this annual la- bor of love - helping a certain .old fellow from the North Pole with his Christmas correspondence. More than 72,000 letters were an- swered in southwestern Ontario last year by over 800 volunteers. Na- tionally, 740,000 replies were sent out. To help the volunteers, Canada Post provides envelopes and letters. This year the corporation's Heri- tage Club - a group of retired Cana- da Post employees, as well as em- ployees with 25 years service or more - will also be taking the time to help Santa ensure children re- ceive replies to their letters. For the past eight years, almost 2000 area school children have tak- en part in this special Christmas program at the museum. Now the public is invited to join in the cele- bration. Although money was scarce and decorations were simple, Christmas was a special time for the early res- idents of Lambton County. In the workshop, a carpenter will demon- strate the simple homemade toys that would have delighted a child 100 years ago. By the 1890's people were more prosperous and Christmas became a more elaborate ceIeb tion. Many presents, such as wax- ead dolls, games and books were urchased and placed, unwrapped, on and un- der the tree. In the parlour,'beside a tree cornered with store-bgyght and homemade decorations, there will be demonstrations of popular Vic- torian paper crafts. . Come out and celebrate Christ- mas Long Ago!
