Mohawks pass toughest test of season
EXETER - The Exeter Mohawks
faced their toughest test so far in 10
games in the Southern Senior A
Hockey League when the third-
place Aylmer Homet came to the
South Huron Rec Centre Sunday
night.
The Mohawks came into the
game leading the league with nine
straight wins, most by blowouts,
but knew they were in for a tough
battle with the Hornets, last year's
Senior A league champions. The
Mohawks built a 4-0 lead in the
second period but had to survive a
furious Aylmer comeback and hung
on fop the win for the 4-3 win in
front of the largest crowd of the
year.
Last Wednesday night the Mo-
hawks won their ninth -straight
game defeating the Chatham Varco
Maroons 9-2, in Chatham.
"We knew we were two pretty
evenly -matched teams and we
knew dam well they bad a. good
team. We watched them play
against Dunnville last Tuesday and
knew they would give us a tough
time. r We got what we expected
from them," said Mohawk coach
.Dave Revington.
It was the most physical game the
Mohawks had been in as well and it
showed in the Mohawks' injury re-
port after the game. Right winger
'Dave Randerson left the game in
third period after referee Rick Sin-
gleton skated over his elbow after
Randerson was dumped to the ice
by a Hornet player. Randerson re-
ceived six stitches in his elbow to
repair the damage
Jeff McClenaghan also left the
game with a tender shoulder after
taking a hard hit from an Aylmer
player and Jeff Scherer also hurt his
shoulder and Jack Thornton re-
ceived a cut lip on another play.
All are expected back in the line-
up for their next game Sunday
night.
The Mohawks came out flying
Sunday night, scoring three times
in the first period, taking the play to
Aylmer for most of the period.
Gord Brooks opened the scoring
just 51 seconds into the game when
he scored from Bill Glover.
Randerson took a nice pass from
Les Arts and beat Aylmer goalie
Gilles Lavziere with a slap shot at
17:57 of the first.

their game Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. The
(;lover scored on a rebound of a
Brook's shot 15 seconds later to
give the Mohawks a three -goal
cushion heading to the first inter-
mission. Greg Snyder also drew an
assist on the play.
The Mohawks took a 4-0 lead
when Ron Elliot's shot from the
point was misplayed by Lavziere at
8:38 of the second. McClenaghan
and Brooks drew the assists.
The Hornets finally got on the
board mid -way in the second when
the Mohawks stopped skating,
which allowed the Hornets to take
over most of the territorial play.
Mike Haines' shot got past Exeter
goalie Bill Dark with Dennis He-
bert and John Osborne picked up
the assists.
The Hornets then cut the lead in
half when Bob Hunter scored from
Rob Goutis and John Osborne at
13:35 of the second.
Peter McMenemy' shorthanded
goal with less than. seven minutes
left made for an interesting finish
and cut the Exeter lead to a goal.
The Hornets pulled Lavziere in
the final minute to try and the tying
goal but the Mohawks were able to
hang on for the win.
Dark stopped 23 of 26 shots and
played well for Exeter but mis-
played two shots that let Aylmer
back into the game. The Mohawks
fired 21 at the Aylmer netminder.
Exeter 9 Chatham 2
The Mohawks outscored the Ma-
roons 4-2 in the first period, 2-0 m
the second and 3-0 in the third and
cruised to another easy victory.
Quincy Wilker led the way with a
hat trick, Al Gates chipped in with
a pair, while singles went to Joe
Scherer, Paul Barton, Barry Bayn-
ham and Greg Snyder. o
Randerson, Scherer, Barton and
Jack Thornton each had a pair of
assists and one each was recorded
by Dale Gibbon, Les Arts, Jeff Carr
and Snyder.
The Mohawks are idle until Sun-
day night when the second -place
Dunnville Mudcats make their first
appearance of the season at the
South Huron Rec Centre at 7:30
p.m.
This should be another tough test
for the high -scoring Mohawks, be-
cause the Mudcats currently pos-
sess the stingiest defence in the
league, allowing just 22 goals so
far in the nine games they have
played. Next Thursday, November
30, the Mohawks will make their
first trip to Dunnville.
Irish end Hawks streak
EXETER - Four goals in the first
seven and a half minutes of play
powered. the Lucan Irish, to a 7-3
win over the Exeter Hawks at the
South Huron Rec Centre v:riday
night.
The loss was the first for 'the
Hawks in five games, while the
Irish have yet to lose this year in 11
games.
Hawks' coach Jack Nairn felt get-
ting
off to the slow start .was the
key to the game.
"They just came out flying and
we stood around and • watched. I
think we outplayed them over the
last two periods, but we can't ex-
pect, to play two periods against a
team like this and expect to win.
They are a first -place team and de-
serve full marks for their win" said
Nairn. ,
Last Tuesday the Hawks blew a
4-1 third -period lead against the
Seaforth Centenaires and had to
settle for 4-4 tie.
The in uries on the Hawks are
starting mount as well. Derek
Shackleton and Jim Dickins were
both sidelined with injuries from
earlier games. Centre Harlen Tin-
ney missed Friday's game' with a
separated shoulder which he re-
ceived in the game against Sea -
forth.
Shackleton will be gone for
about another month with a broken
hand and finger, while Dickins will
be out indefinitely after having his
spleen removed two weeks ago af-
ter it ruptured during a game in
Seaforth.
Greg Deprest had two of the first
four goals for the Irish Friday
night, with Darren Neil and Rick
Weishar getting the others. Weish-
ar's came with just 46 seconds gone
in the game.
Deprest completed his hat trick in
the third period but Lucan also got
a goal from Tim Hayter and an-
other by Neil later in the game.
• Andy Ross. led in the assist de-
partment with four, two each went
to Jamie Pearce, Deprest and Neil,
while Tim Hayter, and Ed Van Ker-
kle had one each.
Scoring for the Hawks were; Jean
Paul Cousineau, from Larry Lewis
and Mark Reid, Doug Clark from
David Dalrymple and Jeff Chip -
chase and Jesse Henderson from
Lewis and Clark.
Exeter 4 Seaforth 4
Last Tuesday night the Hawks
contii . d to play good defence for
two and a half periods but the
Centenaires . exploded for three
goals in the last 10 minutes of the
third and managed a 4-4, extending
the Hawks' unbeaten streak to five
games. But the Hawks blew 2-0
and 4-1 leads and had to settle for
the single point. ,
