Mayor asked for 'Words of Wisdom'
EXETER - Mayor Bruce Shaw
was down on the Exeter Lcgion's
Remembrance Day program on
November 11 for some "Words of
Wisdom" before " dinner was
served.
Shaw began by saying that in
times past, veterans knew What
they were fighting for, and had the
assurance their cause was noble
and their victory just. ' •
The Viet Nam War was the bet:
ginning ,of a change which has
continued into the seventies, and
eighties. Previous concepts of
right and wrong, and old virtues
like honesty and decency have
been shaken.
Shaw listed some present-day
ambiguities - . laws bordering on
stupidity, governments that don't
listen, unfair immigration rules, a
Charter of Rights that is used to
abuse rights, a Young Offenders
Act that offends many, the Meech
Lake agreement that could break up
the country, and an increasingly
heavy tax burden.
Shaw told the more than 200
members and guests of the R.E.
Pooley Branch that the veterans of
past wars fought so the inhabitants
of this country could have 'peace,
joy and freedom. '
He concluded his remarks by say.
ing "Your cause was justified. You
were right. Keep fighting- to help
us remember what you did -and
why."
The evening's guest speaker was
Detective Sergeant Arend De Boer,
who lives -in Lpcan and is a mem-
ber of the city of London's vice
squad. He spoke for a short time
about"hard and soft" pornography,
prostitution and drugs, then an-
swered questions from the audi-
ence.
In remembrance - Jeffrey Garrett and Megan Burke lay the wreath
for the primary classes at Exeter Public School's Remembrance Day
ceremony at the cenotaph.
