One Foot in

By Bob Trotter •
Few consumers in Canada know
what bovine somatotropin is.
But it will not be -a dormant
growth hormone much longer.
A controversy is brewing which
will eventually bring BST into the
public eye and every consumer in
Canada will be well aware that
BST is not an engine additive but
an injection uscd to make dairy
cows produce anywhere from seven
to 15 percent more milk.
A public inquiry will be held into
the use of BST in Ontario's dairy
industry. It has been sparked by a
Cornwall dairy farmer, Lorraine
Lapointe, who has objected to the
wliy the Ontario Milk Marketing
Board has handled a .ban on milk
from animals being treated in ex-
penmcnts with BST. •
The board, along with the gov-
ernment, allowed a drug company
to experiment on cattle at the Elora
Research Station, run by the Uni-
versity of Guelph and the province,
and on cattle owned by : Ken
' McKinnon of Port Elgin. .Mr.
McKinnon, it must be noted, is past
chairman of thc Ontario Milk Mar-
keting Board and vice-chairman of
thc Canadian Dairy'Commission.
The experiments also had federal
health department approval.
But - and here's the rub - the On-
tario Milk Marketing Board ap-
proved the sale of the test milk to
dairies even though thc growth hor-
mone has not been approved for
CO OP
use in Canada. The approval was
based on extensive but confidential
data filed by the drug company.
And that is why Lapointe is com-
plaining.
Who can blame her? The board
allowed the sale even though the
hormone is not approved for use in
Canada simply because a great deal
of milk was involved and milk is
money. -
Health officials in both Canada
and the United States will have to
decide within the next year or two
whether BST will be allowed on
the market.
Lapointe is right when she says
more discussion, more participation
and more information should be
available before any of this milk is
sold. She wants the government -
appointed Farm Products Market-
ing Commission to -conduct the in-

trials so fpr indicate the milk from
BST cows is as safe and as whole-
some as ever. The hormone has
tested absolutely safe : so far - for
humans. It is, not likely to survive
human digestion.
Even so, let's be sure. Even a
great many dairy farmers oppose
the use of BST because they fear it
will turn consumers off milk. If it
will increase production it will de-
crease the number of dairy farmers
Dairy farmers arc dwindling now
because they are becoming more
efficient. Fewer cows arc produc-
ing more milk. More milk means

fewer dairy farmers. -
I talked with a dairy farmer the
other .day who is riled up because
he does not want people - consu-
mers - telling him what is, good or
bad for the dairy industry.
"Should we allow our industry to
be influenced by people who know
absolutely nothing about the is-
sues?" he said. "Bovine somatogro-
pin is safe and effective. Why
shouldn't we use it? Pretty soon
these pure food fools will be telling
us we cannot use any veterinary
drugs, or medicines."
He is one excellent dairy farmer,
too. He knows what he is talking
about it.
But it is the same old story. Jus-
tice must not only be done; it must
be seen to be done.
• Growth hormones such as BST
may be safe as a church but the
public wants to know more about
why they are safe rather than take
the word of a few money -grabbing
drug companies.

Because of the continuing high
cost of short-term borrowing, the
