CENTRALIA - Huron County's
third career fair, held in the after-
noon and evening of November 8,
attracted about one thousand inter-
ested people to Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology's recre-
ation centre.
Students from the senior grades in
both public and separate elementary
schools, all five secondary schools
and the adult education classes,
were invited to come to the CCAT
campus, tour the 59 exhibits, and
talk to those manning the booths.
Represented were community oat -
leges, universities, technical, busi-
ness. and modelling schools, the
armed forces, the OPP, county, pro-
vincial and federal agencies, relig-
ious, health and social services, the
manufacturing, technical and trades
sector, general business, and recrea-
tion or travel•enterprises.
The idea of a career fair to ac-
quaint students with the post- sec-
ondary training and the job oppor-
tunities close at hand as well as
further afield originated with Gord
Smith, head of counselling at Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School in
Clinton. -

a job or more training. That's not
true," Smith said.
He enlisted the support of the Hu-
ron County Board of Education, the
Huron Industrial Training Advisory
Committee and Conestoga College.
Many of Ontario's colleges and
universities were asked to partici-
pate.
The first fair was held at Central
Huron five years ago, and -a second
two years later. By the time the
third was due, Smith began looking
around for larger quarters to accom-
modate the increasing number of
exhibitors. CCAT's recreation cen-
tre proved to be ideal.
Ric Graham, head of counselling
at South Huron, was among those
recruited to a sub -committee that
approached Huron County indus-
tries.for the second and the current'
fair.
Graham credits part of the success
of the 1989 Careef Fair to the
change from a Sunday to a week-
day. The students were bussed to
the Fair in the afternoon.
Graham conducted an informal
poll on the bus taking students
back to SHDHS after .their. tour.
=The comments ranged from "it was
okay", " a nice change from school"
to one girl who said she had learned
everything she wanted to know
about the career that interested her.
"This is the best part ofa career
fair. Kids can go there, meet real
people in the various occupations,
and talk to them personally," Gra-
ham said.
He had noticed, too, that every
one of the students had brought
away a bag filled with informa-
tion.

Because wife assault usually happens
at home, people tend to .think of it as
a family affair. But wife assault is not
a private matter. It is a crime.
As a community we should all be
concerned.
For emergency assistance or referral,
call the Wife Assault Helpline, listed
in the white pages of your telephone
directory or call the police.
