President Anna Keys welcomed everyone. Corre- spondence included a thank you from the Alex McBeath family. A letter was read from Canada Safety Council encouraging seniors .to safeguard the best years of their lives. The first ever National Sen- iors Safety Week is to be observed November 12-18. The club is to entertain Huron - view residents on November 15. Members who are helping with the program are to meet at the complex Monday afternoon November 13 to practice. Several members attended the Fall Rally at Blyth October 18. Anna Keys reported highlights of that afternoon meeting. Zurich and Hensall Clubs will join to host the Spring Rally of Zone 8 in the Zu- rich Community Centre, in April. •-Stan-Lee Club Christmas meeting will be held at the Complex De- cember 5 with dinner . at 6. p.m. Exeter OPP EXETER - The Exeter OPP were called to five vehicle acci- dents last week, three of which in- volved collisions with deer on the area highways. Last Sunday, a vehicle driven by Shirley Phillips of Exeter • on County Road 4 collided with a ve- hicle driven by Johanne Reaburn of Stephen Township. No injuries were reported and damage was de- scribed as minimal. On Wednesday Brenda Laporte of RR2 Zurich was involved in a collision on Highway 84 with a tractor -trailer driven by Robert Rowcliffe of RR2 Zurich. Two deer were struck and killed on Wednesday: one on Highway 23 struck by Susan. Jones, whose car was severely damaged. The other was killed on Highway 83, but damage was light to the vehi- cle of Theodore Vink of Kirkton. On Friday a- vehicle driven by Bruce Caster of London, also struck a deer on Highway 83. Damage was moderate, but no in- juries were reported. Roast beef, turkey and potatoes will be provided. Members are asked to bring pot luck dishes to complete the menu. Bob Reid will speak to the group. Each family was asked to provide a suitable item for a draw prize. Maye McBride and Margaret Armstroqg were social conveners and soon had everyone playing eu- chre. Prize winners were Elmer Hayter, Vi Ross, Louise Ivanchen- .. ko and Bob Peck. Lunch brought the evening to a close. Open house There was a nice turn out of well. wishers on Sunday, November 5 to the Open House in celebration of the 40th Wedding Anniversary of Floyd and Jean Armstrong at the Complex. Family from as far away as Mon- treal (Floyd's sister-in-law Lee Armstrong and her son and his wife, Guy and Leisa) and many area neighbors joined' • the couple for refreshments and best wishes. Granddaughter; seven -week-old Emely Simons was the youngest in attendance while old-time neighbor Frank McClinchey surprised every- one when he dropped in, - both vis- itors helping to make the afternoon a special one: The step dancing trio orMiranda Blake, Tracy Taylor and Cara Ste- phenson favored the family with their talent. Great niece Dana Tay- lor performed a solo dance fol- lowed • by a couple or clogging dances by Mother Pat taylor.and Leisa Stephenson. _ Hear speaker On Sunday, November 12, Varna and Goshen Sunday School had the opportunity to hear Laura Harper from Oakville, Ontario speak on "Sleeping Children Around' the World". Rev. Sam Parker had introduced her before the Children's Story, as Laura gave the children and the congregation some insight into the purpose of this project. This is .a Registered Canadian Charitable Organization founded by Murray and Margaret Dryden of Toronto. Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) has raised over 35 million -for close to 164,000 of the world's suffering children in 28 countries. Some countries are Ken- ya, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Phillip - pines, Peru, Ecuador and Colom- bia. SCAW provides bedkits, made up in the country where they are to be distributed. A bedkit consists of ,-up to 25 items per kit, a ground sheet, mattress, sheets, pillow, pj s, blankets, or mosquito netting, sweater or other clothes and per- sonal care items. Laura had two bedkits with her to bisplay. One was a layette for a aby, the other was from India. The Sunday School were able to present Laura with money for three bedkits. Goshen Sunday School also . presented Laura with money. for bedkits. Personals Margaret McClymont is a patient in University Hospital in London, and is wished a speedy recovery. Bob and Elva Peck, Jim Kirton and Joan and Wayne Beierling all attended a Remembrance Day Ban- quet in Hensall Community Center, hosted by the Hensall Legion on Saturday, November 11. Varna 4-H • The Varna "Fast Food Fixers" met at Cheryl Talbot's house. They all went to Bayfield Foodland where they met Mr. Fisher. He told them about the history of the building and took them on a tout; of the store. He showed them how to package fruit and vegeta- bles. They were also shown differ- ent kids of meat. They saw his office and had a tour of the bakery where bread and muffins are made. They would like to thank Mr. Fisher for taking his time to show them around Food - land. The next meeting is at Cheryl Talbot's November 13 at 7 p.m. to get ready for Achievement which is on November 29. Youth group The Varna -Goshen Youth Group were busy last Thursday evening serving hotdogs, doughnuts, coffee and pop to a large crowd of people at the auction sale held at the Com- plex. Profits made will go to help support themselves for their youth group activities and other projects. From left, Jamie Cathcart, Jason Mawdsley, John Dickie, Tim O'Reilly. - Fire protection under review USBORNE TOWNSHIP - A delegation consisting of Exeter fire chief Gary Middleton, volun- teer firemen Leroy Edwards and Don Wells and Les Trowsdale at- tended the November 7 meeting of Usborne township council to discuss the provision of fire ser- vice to Usborne township. Alter- natives to'the present service, and the ratio of shared costs were among -the issues reviewed as a preliminary to a new agreement. • Reeve Gerry Prout presented road superintendent Ken Parker with a CS Anderson Road School certificate. A joint meeting among the councils • of Usbome, Exeter, Hay ,and Stephen to examine fire protection was recommended. An offer to purchase about five acres of land from Lawrence and Ruth Selves is being prepared by the township's solicitor. The land will be used as a buffer area at the Kirkton waste disposal site. Bill and Leona Morley and Rick and Karen Etherington have agreed to serve on the History Book Pro- motion committee. A report on recycling prepared by Deputy Reeve Pat Down will be discussed at the next meeting. The Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre will be provided with two or three blue boxes, as requested. Local bowlers win trip to US By Ron Dann ZURICH - Mr. and Mrs. Doug Smith Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Huston are enjoying an all -expense paid trip in Florida this week. Smith and Huston, members of the Zurich Town and Country Five Pin Association won the trips by Winning last spring's Hiram Walk- er SpecigOld regional High -Low doubles toumament and finishing sixth overall in the Hiram Walker Special Old Ontario High -Low doubles championship at Hamil- ton. They were also representing the Bluewater Five Pin Associa- tion. - Zurich Town and Country men's team defeated Seaforth 32-16 in Intertown league action Saturday at Zurich. Ron Dann's 1,214(304) and Frank Palen's 1,111 five game scores paced Zurich to the win. Jim Denomme, 10, leads the Y.B.C. bantam boys division Sat- urday mornings at Zurich with 145 high average, 516 triple and 229 high single. Scott Reid is second with a 130 average and 456 triple. Brad Brown's 190 is the second highest single. • Nine year old Kristle Gallagher, leads the bantam girls with 126 av- erage, 440 triple and 182 single. Becky Kirk has second highest 100 average and 341 triple. Bri- anne Haist and Mandy Smith are next in line with 157 and 155 sin- gles.
