Sr. 'Panthers advance to semis

EXETER - Last week, South Hu-
ron District High School's midget
and junior girls' basketball teams
took wins over Stratford Central in
league play.
The senior Panthers were defeat-
ed in their last league game against
Central but claimed a win in quar-
ter -final play over Listowel on Fri-
day.
The midget girls defeated Central
however 42-37 in their last regular -
season game.
Becky Hartman continued to play
well and was top scorer for the Pan-
thers with 12 points. DeAnn Fore-
man followed with eight and
Mindy Bell added six.
The midget girls participate in a
final Huron -Perth tournament at
Stratford Northwestern today
(Wednesday).
The junior girls also took a 32-24
win over Central to advance to the
quarter -final Huron -Perth game
against Stratford Northwestern on
Tuesday.
The • senior girls lost 47-34
against their opponents. The girls
managed to hold a 10-6 lead after
one quarter time but Central came
back and led 37-22 going into the
final quarter. The Panthers made a
slight comeback but fell short.
Julia Meurer led scoring for SH
with seven points, Christine Rose
had seven and Spring Cushman
added six.
But on Friday, the Senior girls
outplayed Listowel 42-28 in quarter
final play on their home court.
The Panthers dominated play and
advanced to the semi-final game
against Stratford Central which was
played yesterday (Tuesday) in
Stratford.
Cushman played extremely well
and was top scorer with 14 points.
Rose and Michelle Ellison followed
with eight and six points respec-
tively.
Broncos- play at Gardens
LONDON - The Exeter Atom
Broncos played three times last
week, but tied their only league
game 2-2 Sunday.
In exhibition action, they also
lost to Clinton at the South Huron
Rec Centre 4-2 and lost 2-1 to a mi-
nor London team at the London
Gardens Saturday afternoon.
In that game, Exeter's Chad Gil-
fillan, gave the locals an early -lead
on a goal four minutes into the
game after being set up by Adam
Hern.
But London scored- with three
minutes left in the first when the
puck deflected into the net off an
Exeter defenceman. London took
the lead for good _17 seconds into
the second frame, when Exeter was
Serving a penalty for having too
many men on the ice.
The London squad was all sec-
ond -year Atom players -and Exeter
did well but were outshot 13-12 in
the game.
Against Clinton, Exeter started
quickly also. Gilfillan opened the
scoring 13 seconds into the game
after being set up by Jeff Sararas
and Ryan Beckett made it 2-0 with
a goal in the dying moments of the
first.
But Exeter ran into trouble in the
second and third frames. Clinton
got on the board at 7::40 of the sec-
ond and it stayed that way until ear-
ly in the third when Clinton scored
three times to take the win.
Clinton made good on four of
Flyers lose twice
ILDERTON - The Exeter Novice
Flyers hockey team played a pair of
games on the weekend but lost both
times, 8-1 Saturday in Ilderton and
4-1 Sunday in Mt. Brydges against
Munccy.
In Sunday's game, Exeter got on.
the board early in the first when Pe-
ter Fragiskatos scored 10 seconds
into the contest from Tim Maver.
But Muncey's Leonard Riley
proved too much for Exeter as he
scored three times later. in the first

The only goal in the game was

On Saturday, Ilderton scored the
only two goals of the opening peri-
od, by Mike Hotson and Josh
Lambier.
But Exeter cut the lead in half
when Jason Miles scored early in
the second with the assist going .to
Robert DcVries. But Ilderton
scored three times later in the sec-
ond and netted three more in the
third.
Ashley Winder wound up with a
hat trick, while other single goals
went to David Crossan, Jason
Grigg and Jason Teahan.
Exeter's record drops to 1-5-1
with the pair of defeats.
Novices tie Parkhill
EXETER - The Exeter Novice 2
Hockey team played Parkhill to a
5-5 draw at the South Huron Rec
Centre Sunday afternoon.
Each team scored once in the
first. Exeter's Matthew Szabo
tumed the right light on first, 'from
Ryan Ralph and Michael Wilhelm,
but Parkhill countered later that
period when Jonathan DeJong
scored unassisted.
Parkhill found the net three
times in the second to twice for
Exeter. DeJong and Jerrod Bender
scored early in the period for the
visitors but Tony Eagleson got one
back for Exeter from Szabo but
Parkhill scored again with DeJong
getting his hat trick. Wilhelm
scored with one second left in the
second before the period was over.
Wilhelm scored early in the third
period to tie the game at 4-4 before
Parkhill took a brief lead on Chris-
tine Ritchie's goal.
The close game ended with Wil-
helm getting the tying goal for Ex-
.eter and his hat trick, unassisted, to
give Exeter the one point.

It was a close game to the finish,
with the home team trailing going
into the last two minutes of play,
but goals from Glenn Hines and
Willy Partridge gave the Mustangs
a 3-2 victory over Belmont.
Craig Schwartzentruber notched
his fourth goal of the year in the
first period to give Exeter a 1-0
lead, assisted by Partridge.
Belmont scored both of their
goals in the second, period, even
though they were outplayed, and
took a 2-1 lead into the third.
Exeter forced the play all period;
and their hard work paid off, as
they tied it and won it late in the
third,
The Exeter defense played a
strong game, shutting down Bel-
mont, and clearing the puck from
the one. Ben Guenther picked up
the other Exeter assist.
Exeter got a strong game from
Hines, helping the Mustangs to
even their record at 2-2, with a 6-2
drubbing of Strathroy, on Saturday,
November 4.
Hines scored three times and set
up another. Single goals were also
, scored by Matt Sims, Partridge and
Jason Keller.
. Ben Kline assisted on three goals,
with Keller, Partridge and Ben
Guenther picked up single assists.
The defense played a tight game al-
lowing fewer than 10 shots on the
Exeter goal.

In the tie against St. Marys, the
game remained scoreless until 3:22
of the second when they visitors
got on the board .
Exeter countered at 8:03 of the
third when Rob Lynn scored from
Sararas. After St. Marys got the go-
ahead goal with less than three min-
utes left to play, Exeter pulled even
for good with 15 seconds left when
Sararas scored from Lynn, while
Exeter's goalie was on the bench
pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

Legion Bantams tie St. Marys
The Exeter Legion Bantams had
yet another good week of hockey.
They played St. Marys on Wednes-
day and a "AA" All London team at
the London Gardens on Sunday af-
ternoon. The Bantams recorded a
tie on Wednesday and a victory in
London.

The club had a great game
against one of last years best ban-
tam hockey clubs in Ontario. t ne
Tweens defeat Forest
FOREST - The Exeter Tween
Ringette team won their second
game of the year defeating Forest
9-6 in Forest Saturday afternoon.
Exeter led 5-2 at the intermission
and poured in four more goals in
the second half of play.
The winners got three -goal per-
formances from both Jennifer Mac -
Niel and Cara Gardner, while Son-
ya Lawrence notches a pair and the
single goal went to Amy Edwards.
Jana Webster had two assists,
leading the way in that department,
while one assist each went to Kim
Farquhar, Suzanne Steciuk Gard-
ner, Danielle Miners and Leanne
FosteE.
Forest got five goals from Bonny
Gordon in a losing cause, while the
single goal was scored by Allison
Hurlock.
Next game for Exeter will be Fri-
day when they play in Clinton at
6:50 p.m..
Juniors lose 11-1
HENSALL - In Hensall, on Sun-
day, October 29, Exeter Junior Rin-
gette put up a poor showing in los-
ing to Seaforth, 11-1.
Cheyenne Westlake, assisted by
Janice Sanders, scored Exeter's
only goal. Katie Armstrong saved a
lot more goals, in net.
On Saturday the Juniors went to
Forest and put forth a much better
effort but tied 4-4.
Katie Armstrong, in net again,
did a super job with many great
saves.
Sonya Laurence, unassisted, start-
ed the scoring for Exeter 4:45 into
the game.
Laurence, assisted by Chris
Chappel, scored 15 seconds after
Bullets tie
Forest 2-2
FOREST - The Exeter Pee Wee
Bullets came away with a 2-2 tie in
their only Lambton-Middlesex
Hockey League game of the week,
Saturday when they travelled to
Forest.
Mark Foster opened the scoring
for Exeter from Brent Urlin early in
the first period, the only goal of
that period. -
Geoff Hann made it 2-0 with a
goal from Scott Inson in the second
period.
But the home team rallied to tally
twice in the third period to come up
with the tie.
It was a well played • game on
both sides with either team getting
a chance to win.
Exetzer's record now stands at 3-1-
1.
Exeter's next game is Saturday
Strathroy.
Forest scored. Later, Forest scored
at 14:00 to end the first period in a
2-2 tie.

Michelle Bowerman, assisted by
Laura Cook, scored to put Exeter
ahead 4-2. Forest came back to tic
it up 4-4. •

an 11-0 record. They outplayed

Pee Wees win squeaker
EXETER - The Exeter Legion
Pec Wees squeaked out a 3-2 win
over Dorchester at the South Huron
Rec Centre last Wednesday night in
Shamrock Hockey League play.
The .game was scoreless until

second, gave Exeter a 1-0 lead.
After Dorchester came back to

Taylor scored from goaltender Dar-

Dorchester tied the game at 2-2
early in the third but Exctcr took
the lead for good with 4:22 left
when McCann notched his second
goal, an unassisted effort.
