'Remembrance By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD - The Novem- ber meeting of the United Church Women was held on. Monday eve- ning with 29 ladies present. Marilyn Pym welcomed everyone and gave the theme "Remem- brance:' and the Call to Worship "Today is Ours". A reading given by Lorraine Al- exander was an essay written in 1985 by Bonnie Turner on Remem- brance, the title being "What the Poppy means to Me". Sharon Passmore showed a film strip and commentary on "Family Life in the Homelands in Africa." It was very moving. June Stewart opened the business part of the meeting with a poem "Always a Hope". The roll call was answered by 'wearing a poppy or paying 250 to the poppy fund. The Annual Meeting will be held in Seaforth on January 22'or 'snow date January 29. Doris Elford, Karen Etherington, Kay Hodgert, Hilda Kellett, Mari- lyn Pym, Mary Rowcliffe and my- self offered to go to the Exeter Vil- la and help Rev. Sheila .with .the church service on Wednesday. The front of the basement was decorated with a cross, poppies and the two honour rolls from the audi- torium of the church which made the'meeting very meaningful. Coming events The Ministry and Personnel Committee will meet at the Manse on Tuesday, November 14 at 8 p.m. On Wednesday, November 15 at 8 p.m. the Official Board will meet at the Thames Road church. The session, The Board of Stewards, U.C.W. representatives, the Sunday School superintendents and any in- terested person are supposed to at- tend. - On Thursday, November 16 from 4-6 p.m. the Confirmation Class will meet at the home of Jon Pass- more. - Sunday, December 3 is White Gift Sunday. Sunday, December 1Q is Christ- mas Open House at the manse, 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Thames Road ladies and the Macgregors hosting. Thursday, December 14 Confir- mationClass Party at 6-7:30 p.m. at Thames Road for all confirmands, elders and sponsors. Hot dogs and donuts will be served and games will follow. Dress: very casual. After dinner, the group arrived at the home of Grant Hodgert, where a number of friends and relatives had gathered to give Jack a rousing surprise birthday party. The eve- ning was spent in roasting Jack with amusing incidents from his past. ArnoldCann added some annec- dotes, and proposed a toast. Jack re- sponded in his usual witty manner. A bounteous lunch and birthday cake were served by his family, Mary Anne, and Brian Smith of St. Thomas, Cathy Vaughan of Den- ver, Colorado, Nancy and Fred Burton of Wingham and Jonathan Cann.of London. The Usborne Guild played Sun- day afternoon at the Seaforth Fid- dle Jamboree. • Youth For Christ well attended BRUCEFIELD Approximately 150.. attended South Huron Youth for Christ on Saturday, November 4 to hear Teen Challenge from Hamilton. . Before the team ministered, Au- burn, Goderich and Zurich quiz teams competed in the regular quizzing. Goderich came first with Zurich placing second. Tecn Challenge is a rehabilita- tion centre for men 16 to 35 years of age with drug and alcohol relat- ed problems. The program, which is free of charge, has proven through government research to have an 86% cure rate among its graduates. • Roger, one of the Tccn Chal- lenge team, spoke of being 'raised in a Pastor's home, but left home at the age of 16. After several years on his own, he came to the realiza- tion that drugs, alcohol and party- ilig ltd not givc the happiness that he had been searching for. He said only after making God the Lord of his life did he discover the true meaning and purpose of life. South Huron Youth For Christ is celebrating, its 40th Anniversary December 2 at 8 p.m. at Bruccfield Public School. Everyone is wel- come. Bring memorabilia from the past and join in the celebration. Personals - Community sympathy is ex- pressed to Don and Sharon Baker, in the death last week of Sharon's father, Anthony Reg;er. Funeral service .was held Saturday, Novem- ber 11 at St. Peter's Roman Catho- lic church in St. Joseph. - A number of Shipka and area folks attended the hot turkey supper at Grand Bend United Church last Wednesday evening. Hugh and I attended the wedding .on November 4, of our nephew, Brett Finlayson, son of Art and Mary Finlayson, Seaforth, to Janice • Cains, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cairns. Dashwood by Bernice Boyle DASHWOOD Dashwood Women's Institute met November 7 at the Community Centre with the Citizenship and Legislation group in charge of the program. President Katherine Becker wel- comed 20 members. The November commentary was entitled "Lest We Forget". Members were reminded of na- ture, Armistice Day, the first Thanksgiving and the old saying "Smile and the whole world smiles with you." A report—on the London Area Convention was given by dele- gates Sherrie Edwards and Kathe- rine Becker. The fall board meeting in Hen- sall was attended by Martha Wei- gand. Plans were made for a euce • party Wednesday, November 15 -at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The next meeting is on Decem- ber 5 will be the Christmas dinner. Genie McCrae read an Armis- tice Poem after which all stood for a minute's silence in memory of the men who died during the wars. Chairlady Aldene Wolfe intro- duced the speaker. Erich Freiter, who spoke on an immigrant be- coming a Canadian citizen. Dashwood 4-H The last meeting of the Dash- wood "Eager Eaters" was held on November 1, 1989. Each member made one item of food for the last meeting. They en- tertained their leaders and several games and served their specialties. The 4-H Achievement night will be held at the Exeter Public .,__._.. 23, 1989. 4-H news The Grand Bend 4-H Healthy Snack Attackers held yet another meeting on November 6 at Donna Lavie's. This meeting was to plan the Achievement night skit. The meeting went successfully and the members called it quits at 8:30. We left the meeting with the major plans of our skit and ideas of how to make the costumes. There will be another meeting November 20 at Donna Lovie's to practise the skit before Achieve- ment night which is on Thursday, November 23 at the Public School in Exeter. Ceremonies will begin at 7:30. Girls taking this project on "Good Foods Fast" were Carrie Wilhelm, Elizabeth Russell, Michell Lovie, Sarah Pauerson, Pam Dietrich, Kar- en Lovie, Karen McKay and Lori Finkbeiner.
