speaks to Womens Institute

GRAND BEND - The ladies of
the Grand Bend Women's Institute
met on Thursday, November 9.
President Millie Desjardine opened
the meeting. For roll call the mem-
bers and visitors expressed their
opinions about the postal service.
Ladies taking the Basket Weav-
ing Course were reminded to bring
a pair of side cutters and a strong,
heavy knitting needle.
Brenda Love gave a report on the •
highlights of the district board
meeting held • recently in Hensall.
She touched briefly on changing at-
titudes toward recycling programs,
child abuse centres in . Huron
County, finger puppets for the Chil-
dren's Hospital, coins for friend-
ship, W.I. mugs, the District Annu-
al meeting and the Sportmen's
ner.

Art club alive
in The Bend

GRAND BEND - Did you know
that there. is an Ari Club in Grand
Bend, alive, well and active? Well,
there is but the members have been
rather qu'et about it until now. -
Thc Grand Bend Art Club held a
meeting on Tuesday, November 7,
at the home of Phyllis Cornish, as a
farewell tea party in honor of
Joanne Murphy..
Mrs. Murphy has been the
group's art instructor for many
years, but she and her husband are
now moving to Toronto. The presi-
dent, Larry Cole, presented her a
gift from the Club members, with
many thanks and good wishes for
the future.
The Art Club meets every Tues-
day afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Town
Hall. There are presently about a
dozen members, who work at paint-
ing in two mediums, oil and water-
colors.
A new instructor will be joining
the group after Christmas, and any-
one interested is welcome to join
them. Call 238-2779.

and Mrs. Roy Flear's 60th Wedding
Anniversary, at St. John's By the
Lake, on Sunday, November 26.
The next meeting is to be a
Christmas Dinner at the Colonial at
12:30 p.m. on December 7. A com-
mittee was organized to cater the
Christmas Dinner for the- seniors
Golden Age Club on December 6,
Wednesday.
Verna Lovie introduced the guest
speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Hil-
da Cornell from Denfield: She was
employed in the Denfield post of-
fice until it was closed in Novem-
ber 1988.
She stated that ordinary postal
workers are being laid off to save
money, but at the same time more
top executive people arc being
hired.

CENTRALIA - At the United
Church Rev. Carter chose as her
topic "The Forth Temptation".
On Tuesday and Thursday it is
exercise time 8:45 to 9:30.
On Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
Bible study continues' at the
manse. -
Next Saturday the congregational
turkey supper will be held at the
church at 6 p.m. A musical pro-
gram will follow.
On Sunday December 3 new
members will be received by bap-
tism and transfer. If interested
please contact Rev. Carter.
The official board meets Thurs-
day November 23 at 8 p.m. at
Centralia. All members of the
board are asked to attend.

Jerry and Carol Mills.
Rural mail carriers in her area are
unhappy with the new service.
She also spoke of Rural Dignity,
which is a movement to preserve
and enhance the dignity and integri-
ty of life in rural Canada.
Privatization of the Post Office is
one way that rural life is being
eroded. Donna Lovie thanked the
speaker and presented her with a
small gift of appreciation.
Tea and cookies were served by
the hostesses, Catharine Junkcr and
Brenda Love.

Fifty years ago WWII began and
now the Berlin Wall is down and
democracy is on the rise id former-
ly communist countries.
It means a great deal to me per-
sonally, since all of my relatives
were Slavic or Bohemian. I would
like to think that some of them are
still alive in those countries, to
share in the joy of their new free-
dom from tyranny. Perhaps some-
day we can trace them and actually
communicate with each other as
family, after two generations of si-
lence.
Yes, "Let There Be Peace on
Earth, and Let It Begin with Me."
South Huron and District Associ-
ation for the Mentally Handicapped
will be celebrating their annual
Christmas dinner party as usual, but
ti will be for adults only.
A different party has been orga-
nized for the children. All handi-
. capped children of Huron County
(18 and under) and their families
will be invited to a Christmas Party
on December 9, at the Clinton
Town Hall, from 2-4 p.m. There
will be refreshments, entertain-
ment, and Santa Claus may even at-
tend!

GRAND BEND - The Catholic
Women's League of Immaculate
Heart of Mary Parish met recently
for tbeir October meeting in the Al-
hambra Hall. They began at 8 p.m.,
rolling pennies for the Esk-Omi
Missions of northern Canada;
$85.50 was collected in pennies.
Twenty-three members signed
the roll call, and Roberta Walker
. presided for the meeting.
several invitations were received;
from St. Peter's CWL, St. Joseph,
to attend their annual Penny Sale
on Sunday, October 22, at 7 p.m.
Exeter Precious Blood CWL invit-
ed them to their annual Christmas
Penny Sale at the Exeter Legion on
November 15, Immaculate Concep-
tion CWL is hosting a Harvest Ba-
zaar on Saturday, November 4,
from 10 to 2 p.m. in Stratford.
The London Diocesan 1989 Ev-
angelization Conference was held
on Saturday, October 21, at St.
Clair College in Windsor, wiih Fa-
ther Joe Hardy.
President Walker outlined plans
for a Huron -Perth Deanery "Fun
Night" to be held on February 7,
1990, at the Dashwood Community
Center. It will be a potluck supper
beginning at 6:30 p.m. and hosted
by five area councils. Six councils
have already volunteered to provide
entertainment for the evening, and,
other councils will bring door priz-
es. The invitation will be formally
presented at the Deanery Meeting
on October 25, and a planning ses-
sion will be held in November.
After some discussion, it was de-
cided to participate in Meals on
Wheels again in- 1990, for the
month of March and the first two
weeks of April. Finnegan's Restau-
rant will be preparing the meals
each Thursday, at the cost of $3.00
each. Anyone interested in receiv-
ing this service is to call Lioness
Karen Humer, 238-8603 (business).
Over 100 signatures were sent
out to the national CWL on the
Right to Life petitions; and Walker
has a list of all -female MPs in Otta-
wa, for a letter -writing campaign.
Five members, including Father
Beck Will be attending the Deanery
meeting on October 25 at St.
Mary's, Hesson, near Listowel.
Walker thanked all the members
who attended the Thanksgiving Ec-
umenical at Greenway United
Church. Immaculate Heart of Mary
will be hosting the Christmas Ecu-
menical on December 5, Tuesday,
at 8 p.m. Father Beck will be the
guest speaker, he has some special
pamphlets for an Advent Service.
Plans were made to cater the an-
nual Alhambra . Cash Draw and
Dance to be held on November 17,
at the Thedford Arena. The case
containing religious articles at the
back of the church, will be open on
the last Sunday of each month, for
anyone who wishes to "purchase
confirmation or Christmas gifts.
The CWL Christmas Party will
be December 11, a Monday, and
husbands are invited.
Walker gave a report on the Re-
gional Council meeting held in Sea -
forth, October 14. The next meet-
ing will be November 20, 8 p.m. in
the Alhambra Hall (;neer cneakerc
will be from Amnesty Internation-
al.
Catholic news
On Remembrance Day weekend,
-Father Paul Beck's sermon was
about death and Resurrection.
Dr. Jim and Beth Jean were Eu-
charistic Ministers, and Dr. Jean
was reader for the 11 a.m. Mass on
Sunday. Roberta Walker was can-
ter, and sang a solo, Panis Angeli-
cas, • at Communion. The choir
hymn for Communion was the
"Ave Maria".
The Order of the Alhambra, Al-
garva #168 have a busy season
ahead of them. November 17 is the
Cash Draw and Dance at Thedford
Arena, beginning at 9 p.m. The
CWL will be catering the lunch for
that dance.
The annual Alhambra Christmas
Party, for members and their fami-
lies, will be held on December 3, in
the Alcazar, or Alhambra Hall.
The men (sir -nobles) will be trav-
elling farther on December 9, for
two occasions. That Saturday after-
noon will be a Christmas Party for
all handicapped children and their
families, throughout Huron County,
held at the Clinton Town Hall,
from 2 to 4 p.m., and the Alham-.
brans have been asked to help.
They are already sponsoring People
First of South Huron in a fund-
raising dance, at the Thedford are-
na, on December 9 from 9 to 1 a.m.
The ladies of the CWL will also
be busy, with the Christmas Ecu-
menical they will be hosting on
Tuesday, December 5. Their annual
Christmas party will be on Decem-
ber 11. Members of both groups, la-
dies and gentlemen, are also in-
volved in Choir practice for the ,
Christmas 'season, so it looks like a
very busy calendar for all!
Seven students of St. Peter's Sem-
inary, London, will be ordained as
deacons during this week - the last
step before ordination to the priest-
hood for the Diocese of London.
Bible Study
The Grand Bend Bible Study
group met at Sauble Court Lounge
last Tuesday with 16 ladios present.
Eleanor Dune opened with a Rem-
brance Day poem and Millie Des-
jardine led them in a singsong of
hymns.
They continued with a Bible
Study about "women Who Be-
lieved God", -discussing the section
Mout "Women Who Prayed". -
In the past two weeks they have
discussed the stories of three wom-
en who sought the Lord's help, and
were persistent in their prayer re -
qt. (Matthew 15:21-28, Luke)
18:1-8ues, and Matthew 28:20-28.
They finished the section with Je-
sus' pattern for prayer, found in
Matthew 6:5-15.
Each of these women had great
faith in God. We must remember to
spend more time in prayer, seeking
God's Will in all things. Doris Pee-
bles led the discussion, and Ethel
Lennox closed with prayer, remem-
bering the sick and bereaved.

United Church
At Grand Bend United Church on
Sunday moming, Rev. Colin Sto-
ver's sermon was entitled "Mu-
seums, Muskets and Memories".
Our remembrance of war should
not be relegated to museums and
memories, but motivate us to pro-
motu life and peace.
In keeping with the Remem-
brance theme, the Children's Choir
sang "Let There be Peace on
Earth".
Rev. Stover thanked the ladies of
the UCW for all their work in orga-
nizing another successful .annual
Turkey Supper for the church.
The Grand Bend UCW - After-
noon Unit will meet on November
16 at 1:30 p.m. Roll call is a scrip-
ture verse with "Love". Bring any
articles for Family Services, and all
ladies are welcome.
The Grand Bend Young People's
Group will meet on Saturday, No-
vember 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the
church
