Although South Huron made the game tougher on themselves by having five fumbles and two passes interrupted, they still managed to overcome their opponents and take the victory. "Defence kept us there," said coach Ron Bogart. "We came up with the big plays when they were needed," he added. South Huron's first good oppor- tunity •came early in the first quar- ter when they attempted to pass off a sweep play but Rob Wonnacott's pass was under thrown and inter- cepted by the Viking defence. Later in the quarter Goderich punted into the Panther end zone. Wonnacott attempted to return, came out but was forced back again and tackled to give up two-point safety , put- ting the Vikings on the score board. Following Chris Haugh'$ kick off from the SH 35 -yard line, Brent McDonald intercepted a Goderich pass and returned 20 yards, ending the first quarter. Eventually short rushes by An- drew Thompson, Dan Weigand and Wonnacott moved the ball up the field. Jeff Denotter put the Pan- thers on the scoreboard on a 14 - yard touchdown run and Haugh converted. Den Otter fumbled on two of Goderich's punts and the Vikines were out to mid -field. A short kick on Goderich's next punt put SH in good field position and although Den Otter fumbled on the first play, McDonald made his second interception and returned 23 yards. Den Otter, Thompson and Won- nacott eventually moved the ball and on the last play before half time Harlen Tinney found O'Connor in the end zone for a 25 - yard touchdown and Haugh con- verted to give SH a 14-2 lead. Early in the third quarter, Den Otter made a 52 yard sweep and Weigand moved five more yards to the one yard line but Thompson fumbled and SH lost the ball. The Panther offence took off in Juniors shut out in championship By Michelle Ellison GODERICH South Huron Dis- trict High School's junior football team went up against the Goderich Vikings on Saturday for the Huron - Perth Championship game but they returned home with an 18-0 loss. "I was very pleased with the way we played," said'coach Dave Cox. He was, however, concerned with - the high winds. "In order to win the game, we needed to pass the ball more. The wind made it difficult." The physically bigger Goderich team seemed to play a style of "power" football which was better. suited to the windy day. The Viking's first touchdown came in the second quarter on a short run. A reverse 12 -yard run in the third quarter'brought the second touchdown and the game should have been left there with a 12-0 count but SH fumbled the ball deep in their end and the Vikings scored another touchdown to leave SH shutout with an 18-0 defeat. The Panthers had some good op- portunities, one being on the 10 - yard line in the first half of the game but time ran out in the half. Jason McNeil was SH's main Bali carrier and played very well. John Paul Maurer played all over the field, including quarterback and per- formed very well also. The Panther defense put forth an excellent effort stopping their oppo- nents on a couple of rushes up the field. Dan Masse and Josh Masse came' through on defence and played very well for the Panthers. Although the Panthers were de- feated by a much. more physical team they played well and should be , proud of their performance in league play which allowed them to be eli- gible contenders for the HP champi- onship. Defence helping Hawks win EXETER - At the start of the Western Junior D Hockey League season, Exeter Hawk coach Jack Nairn had a goal for his team, to keep the goals against at three or below for the entire season. In their last four games the Hawks have allowed only nine goals scored on them and have won all four times including a 3-2 come -from -behind win over the Wellesley Applejacks Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. On October 20, the Hawks lost 5-2 at home to the Mitchell Hawks and since then have turned in one of the stingiest defensive perfor- mances in the league to run their winning streak to four games. Since then they beat Mitchell in Mitchell 5-3, downed Tavistock 3- 1 and beat Scaforth 8-3 in Sea - forth, before winning Friday night 19 run their record to 7-3. The Hawks have also had some key injuries during that stretch as well. Derek Shackleton is expect- ed to be out of action for about an- othermonth after receiving a brok- en hand and finger after being slashed in the Toss to Mitchell. Last Sunday, November 5, cap- tain Jim Dickins collapsed at the team bcnch after being hit and suf- fered a ruptured spleen. Dickins was taken to Seaforth Hospital and later transferred to Stratford Gener- al, where he had his spleen re- moved later thatday. Dickins is ex- pected to be released from hospital, but wilt, likely miss the remainder, of the season. • Goaltender Todd , Campbell missed Friday night's game with a • bruised left hand and Clint McCann pldyed • in Campbell's absence. Campbell is expected back ih the lineup soon. The Hawks fell behind early against Wellesley when the Apple- jacks scored on McCann, at 15:01 of the first, when Nick Banbury slipped one behind him. Exeter took a 2-1 lead on Wayne Cole's goal from Andrew Fricter in the second. Mt. Brydges pulled off the tying goal late in the third frame. Ryan Sullivan played well in goal to keep Exeter in the game. It stayed that way until the 6:22 mark of the second period, when Wellesley scored a power -play tal- ly, with Brian Gerber doing the damage. But the Hawks power -play, which made the difference in the game, went to work before the sec- ond was over. At 14:46 of the sec- ond, Jean-Paul Cousineau scored from Jamie Tomes and Bryan Quinn. The Hawks were outshot 8- 2 in the second period but one of those shots found the mark. The Hawk power -play struck again at 4:02 of the third when Doug Clark scored to tie the game from Jeff Chipchase and Cousi- neau. • - David Dalrymple's power -play marker from Harlen Tinney and Chipchase at 11:40 proved to be the final quarter as they rushed tor 137 yards compared to the Vikings mere three yards. Wonnacott went over from the - eight -yard line to give the Panthers the 20-2 win. • After Haugh's kick off Goderich fumbled, Graham Arthur recovered ' and Wonnacott gained 15 yards but , fumbled. An interception by Justin. O'Rourke started SH moving the balf`well again but the game ended with SH celebrating the 20-2 vic- tory. The Panther defence was definite- ly in the game causing, a fumble and making three interceptions. Doug Clark • led the Panthers with 17 key tackles. Glen McBeath made 1'5; Mark Burton 14, Norm Atkins 13 and Steve Heywood and Laurie Chalmers made 11. Unfortunately this would be the last HP football game played as the conference could fold, but at least the Panthers can be proud to know they made history for SH by taking the title for the final four years. the winner. The Applejacks pulled the goalie in the last minute tb try and tie the game but to no avail. Referee Marshall Copp called several penalties in the game. The,,. Hawks were called for 54 minutes in penalties and 64 minutes went to Wellesley. l'he difference was Copp's call on Weliesley's Todd Coles who on one play got two minutes for hook- ing, two minutes for roughing a five minute major for fighting and two more minutes for being the in- stigator, when he tried to take on Joel _ Weston, but Weston would have no part of that and dropped down and only received a two min- ute minor in the altercation. The Hawks • scored the winning goal while Coles was serving his major infraction. Taken down - Rob .Wonnacott, (32), of the South Huron I istrict High.
