By Michelle Ellison
EXETER - South Huron District
High School's Senior football team
clinched first place in the Huron -
Perth conference last Monday
when they crushed the Goderich
Vikings 36-0 in a league game on
home turf. Unfortunately, the Jun-
ior Pantheri fell to the Vikings 36-
14.
The Senior Panthers played an
outstanding offensive and defen-
sive game as they held the Vikings
to a mere 52 yards rushing, while
they rolled through with 249 yards.
"Any time you can shutout Gode-
rich and hold them to less than 100
yards rushing, it has to be a great
win," commented Panther coach
Ron Bogart.
The offensive line, led by Doug
Clark, did a superb job in blocking
the holes for the running backs,
like Rob Wonnacott who rushed
for 200 yards and scored three
touchdowns.
Wonnacott put SH on the score-
board on a 31 -yard touchdown run.
Dave O'Connor kicked the convert
and SH held a seven -point lead af-
ter the first quarter of play.
The second quarter brought two
more converted touchdowns by
Wonnacott on four and 26 -yard
runs.
Chris Haugh kicked off with a
long 65 yard boot into the end zone
for a single to give South Huron a
22-0 lead going into the second half
of the game.
Thompson took in an eight -yard
run for a touchdown in the third
quarter and O'Connor made the
convert.
In the final quarter, quarterback
Harlen Tinney closed scoring for
the locals on a short one -yard
touchdown run. O'Connor kicked
the convert and the Panthers
claimed the 36-0 win.
SH's defence played exceptional-
ly well shutting down Goderich's
running attack.
The Panthers stopped Goderich
short of a first down on their first
series, Clark blocked their fourth -
down kick in the second series and
Mark Burton made one of his two
interceptions on their third series.
Norm Atkins led SH in key tack-
les with 15. Brent McDonald made
12, Glenn McBeath 10 and Laurie
Chalmers nine.
The Junior Panthers took a disap-
pointing 36-14 loss against the Vi-
kings.
"They are a very good football
team and a very physical football
team," said coach Dave Cox.
South Huron's first touchdown
came on a short run by Randy
Johnson in the second quarter.
Johnson also made the convert.
Jason McNeil ran in another
touchdown in the third quarter and
Johnson made the convert but the
Panthers couldn't catch their oppo-
nents and fell 36-14.
The Vikings' scoring mainly
came on three big play touch-
downs. They recovered a fumble
that put them in good position to
score. Another came on a long
pass.
However, Cox said they made a
few mistakes that cost them and he
felt his team could have played the
Vikings better than they did.
Trying to break a tackle - Colin Struth, of the South Huron District High School Junior Boy's football
team, (29), tries to break the grip of a Sarnia St. Clair player when those teams met in an exhibition
game at South Huron Thursday afternoon. The Panthers won a close contest.
Mustangs lose squeaker
FOREST - Exeter's MacLean's Mustangs lost a close hockey game
in Forest, last Friday night.

hold on as Forest came back with four unanswered goals, to win 4-3.
Scoring for Exeter were: Craig Schwartzentruber with two goals,
Ben Kline with two assists and Scott Rowe had the other goal. Ken
Hines had another excellent game in goal, in a losing effort.
A wet run - Scott Wellington, of the South Huron Senior Boys' cross-
country team, crosses the finish line rather wet during the Huron -
Perth run at F. E. Madill School in Wingham Thursday. The race went
ahead despite snow, rain and windy weather. All Panther runners
qualified for WOSSA this week, also at Madill.

run. His second came in the second
