The 10 -week clinic has an atten- dance of, 104 young people which convener, Terry o'Rourke, says is the usual attendance level. The clinic also involves coaches, taken from the senior boys and girls basketball teams from SHDHS. This gives the high school stu- dents a chance to gain valuable ex- perience working with the grade school kids. O'Rourke feels the young coaches are easier for the kids to relate to than adults. The one -and -a -half hour sessions give the athletes a half hour of group work where they learn simple plays, ball handling and other valu- able basketball skills. The remain- ing hour is spent playing games. The kids are split up into 12 teams, six boys and six girls. Each team plays two games a night. Each participant in the clinic also receiyes a t -shirt for a small prict which is included in the participa- tion fee. Awards are also presented as in- centives for the athletes. A top boy and girl award as well as a sprit award are the main awards present- ed. So far, the clinic has been well at- tended and the participants enjoy meeting new friends while they have fun and learn valuable skills. Bantams win, tie EXETER - The Exeter Lincoln Bantams started their season with one win, one loss and one tie last week. Exeter opened up with a 2-1 win against Belmont last Wednesday night, tied Strathroy 2-2 Saturday and lost 2-1 to Parkhill Saturday night. Derrick Campbell and Brian Gardner scored for Exeter in the win over Belmont with Gardner and Kevin Johns assisting on the first goal and Campbell and Greg Dalrymple setting up the second. Jeremy Brock's goal with 20 left in the contest lifted Exeter to a 2-2 tie in Saturday's game. Matt Gard- ner and Campbell assisted on Brock's goal. Gardner had opened the scoring in the game, from Tony Armstrong to give Exeter a quick 1-0 Lead. Brian Gardner scored the only goal in the 2-1 loss from Greg Dal- rymple and Brad Thompson. Bullets edge Belmont EXETER - The Exeter Pee Wee Bullets won twice last week, once in league play and one in an exhibi- tion game. Last Wednesday night they edged Mitchell 1-0 in a exhibition contest and defeated"` Belmont 3-2 Saturday at the South Huron Rec Centre. Trevor Taylor's goal from Matt Godbolt and Jim Dietrich in the third period was all Exeter needed last Wednesday as Jason Clay turned aside all Mitchell shots to record the shutout. Saturday's game saw Adam Jean give Exeter a 1-0 lead in the first period, scoring from Trevor Truemner and Adam Wallis. They scored twice more in the pe- riod, Scott Inson scored from Wal- lis and Truemner and Geoff Hann tallied from Brian Richardson and, they were able to hang on for the win. Next game for the Bullets is Sat- urday when Watford will be at the SHRC. . Town and Country Bowling Sports Spotlight by Wayne Proctor 1 Some long overdue rule changes have finally become reality in the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association this year. In an effort to crack down on major injuries in the sport, the CAHA is finally toning down on major violators on players that try to use their sticks for more than scoring goals. I for one applaud their efforts in doing so. Charlie Lennox, the new supervisor of officials for the Ontario, Hockey Association, outlined the changes that have taken place. Lennox is taking over that job from Will Norris, who moved up to supervisor of officials in the National Hockey League after the death of John McAuley earlier in the year. Norris was a guest speaker at the Junior Hawks banquet in April and said the CAHA was considering making changes that would protect the player from injury, which all of thc new rule changes do. The first rule change is checking from behind. Previously officials handed out penalties for checking another player into the boards but the new rules change cover the entire ice. Any player checking an- other from behind anywhere on the ice, where the player cannot de- fend himself, will be assessed a five-minute major or a game mis- conduct. Lennox said this rule will be enforced to cut down on the number of neck injuries. The second change is any attempted butt end or spearing will re- sult in a penalty whether the attempt lands or not. This will he change from a minor to a double minor: Any that missed will be called regardless. Grabbing the facemask will be called as a minor or major penalty and that will 1;•e called more frequently from now on. The severity of the punishment will naturally be Icft up to the referee and will de- pend on intent to injure. The one major change that I think is a very good idea is now tak- ing effect is any playing accumulating three, minor or major stick penalties, like spearing, slashing, high sticking or cross checking will be tossed from the game. This will cut down on a lot of the goon play in hockey. .. . Iv:"... in..nw U17 Uixirehra. Ani r UWIY%:t ;is w' bauw, U1Ul nut be counted as one penalty. In this case it is up to the official scorer to remind thc referee how many stick infractions a player has so far.. Another new nile designed to protect the player from injury if he loses his helmet he must retrieve it right away or skate to the player's bench. If he fails to do this he will be given a penalty. If a goaltendcr loses his helmet while play is on the play will im- mediately be stopped. If the goalie deliberately takes his mask off to stop play then he will be given a delay of game penalty. Lennox also said to help speed up play, only faceoff that will take place in neutral ice will be one after a goal. He said most faceoffs will now take place either just outside the bluclines or in the faceoff circles near the nets. If a winger moves into a faceoff circle too early before the puck is dropped, then the centre will be waved from taking the draw so Lennox said most wingers had better not move or they will have to answer to thc centers. This in one way is a good idea but bad in another because in one sense they want the game sped up and this could be slowing it down even more. According to Lennox memos of the new rule changes have been sent out to all teams under the CAHA jurisdictions and all officials took refresher courses over the summer to inform them of the changes.
