Says GST will harm tourism MISSISSAUGA - Ontario's tour- ism industry may face job losses and revenue shortfalls if the federal government's proposed goods and services tax (GST) goes into effect, according to Ken Black, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recrea- tion. Speaking at the Attractions Onta- rio annual meeting in Mississauga, Mr. Black said he is very concerned about the negative impact of the proposed federal GST on the domes- tic tourism industry. "The combined effect of the UST and tourism marketing cutbacks at the federal level will hit the tourism industry hard," he said, citing na- tional figures from the Canadian Tourism Research Institute which !! "With increasing competition for the tourist dollar and a slump in tourism this year in Ontario, the impact of the GST will only com- pound our problems," he said. "The tax will encourage Ontarians to va- cation outside the country since it generally. will not apply on over- seas travel packages. It will also discharge foreigners from vacation- ing in Ontario." Visitors here will pay more for • tourisni-related goods and services, he added, since the tax will be added to previously untaxed products throughout the hospitality industry. He said Canadians may also decide not to take vacations and leisure trips at home because the GST will decrease the disposable income of Canadians. Many have planted trees, increased wildlife habitat, farmed with con- servation in mind and have general- ly been good stewards of our envi- ronment. These activities and attitudes have helped the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority in its work in environmental stewardship. The Conservation Awards recognize these contributions.
