Continued from page 13
Neither team had many scoring
opportunities in the game, but
Mitchell made better use of theirs.
Mitchell outshot Exeter 20-15 in
the game.
Shayne Adair opened the scoring
for Mitchell with a power -play goal
at 13:34 of the first, from Trot
McMann.
It stayed that way until 4:01 of
the second when Dan Woodhouse
scored from Adair.
Captain Jim Dickins got the home
squad on the board with a short-
handed, unassisted tally_ mid way in
the second frame.
Mitchell got another power -play
tally, and what proved to be the
game winning goal at 17:53 of the
second stan2a, with Steve Murray
doing the damage.
Exeter crept back to with a goal
with 11:59 to play in the game
when Harlen Tinney scored a pow-
er -play goal for the home team,
from Jamie Tomes and David Dal-
rymple.
But the straw that broke the cam-
el's back for Exeter was Dean
Smith's unassisted goal with 15:15
gone in the third and Elliot's empty -
net goal with time running out.
Next game for the Hawks is to-
night, Wednesday, when travel to
Mitchell for a return match at 8:45
p.m. Next home game is Saturday
night, November 4 at 8:30 p.m.,
when the Tavistock Braves will be
at the SHRC, at 8:30 p.m. The
Hawks also travel to Seaforth Sun-
day afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. mati-
nee contest against the Centenaires.
The'Hawks will also be holding
their annual Poor Boy Luncheon
from 11-3 p.m. at the S.H.R.C. It
will be an all -you -can -eat spaghetti
dinner for $4 for adults.
Panthers lose
By Michelle Ellison
GODERICH - South Huron Dis-
trict High School's Junior football
team dropped a league game 32-13
to the Goderich Vikings and the
Senior Panthers, although defeating
their rivals 14-6, probably played
in their first competitive league
game of the season. -
"It is unusual to be a bit disap-
pointed when you win but I know
we could have played better," said
Senior coach Ron Bogart. "Gode-
rich was up for the game and we
were on our heels."
For nine minutes of the first quar-
ter, a 14 -play drive resulted in Rob
Wonnacott going over the end f
SH's first touchdown. Chris Hau
kicked the one -point convert.
In the second 'quarter, Goderich
became more competitive but Har -
len Tinney found Dave O'Connor in
the end zone for a 22 -yard touch-
down and Haugh converted to give
the Panthers -a comfortable 14-0
lead after halftime.
The third quarter saw a reverse of
the first with Goderich controlling
play and SH only seeing the ball for
three plays. Fortunately the Pan-
thers held on to their shutout.
In the fourth, Goderich retumed a
punt 11 yards and on three first
downs running a a 15 yard penalty
against SH, Goderich found them-
selves on the one -yard line.
South Huron accepted the chal-
lenge and managed to make one of
the best defensive stands Bogart has
,seen in high school football. The
Panther defense stopped their oppo-
nents on four successive pays from
the one -yard line.
Unfortunately, when the Panthers
had to punt on the fourth down,
Haugh made a good kick but Gode-
rich made a 32 -yard return to give
them a touchdown with two min-
utes remaining.
Wonnacott ran for 87 yards rush-
ing and Jeff Denotter .for 27
throughout the game.
Denotter also caught three passes'
from Tinney for 100 yards.
Another setback for the Panthers
was the number of penalties. Seven
penalties were called against the
Panthers, costing them 95 yards.
On Panther defense, an unknown
player made 17 key tackles while
Mark Burton had 15, Doug Clarke
11, including one -and -a -half sacks,
and Brent McDonald 11.
The Senior Panthers now receive
a first place bye -in to the final Hu-
ron -Perth game on November 11 on
Panther territory. Bogart is expect-
ing to see a great game as he feels
that even in Thursday's game,
"Goderich was a different team".
In the junior game, the Panthers
were in the game but some unneces-
sary mistakes cost them.
After losing to the Vikings, in
their first meeting of the season 36-
14, SH was better prepared after
making a couple of adjustments and
coach, Dave Cox says "The play
was much closer than the score in-
dicates. We were in the game". -
In the first quarter, SH opened
scoring on a short run touchdown
by Randy Johnson.
The Panthers, however, made er-
rors in pass coverage allowing two
pass completions that led to touch --
downs for Goderich to give the Vi-
kings a 12-5 lead after two quar-
ters.
After receiving the ball after half-
time, SH moved the ball well up
the field and Jason McNeil scored
SH's second touchdown on another
very short run.
The Vikings scored again -with
two minutes remaining and with
Johnson injured, SH wasn't able to
move the ball well.
On the last play of the game,
Goderich scored and made a two
point convert to make it a 32-12
game.
However, SH plays in the semifi-
nal game against Listowel tomor-
row at home.
"It's going to be really tough if
Randy can't play," commented.
Cox. "The finals will also depend
how healthy we are," he added.
