Panthers win WOSSA crown
By Michelle Ellison
ST. THOMAS - Last week,
South Huron District High School's
field hockey team made becoming
Huron -Perth and Western Ontario
Champions look easy. The girls
easily dominated play in both victo-
ries.
On Tuesday, SH met local rivals
St. Marystfor the H -P final game
and came away with a 2-0 victory
on home turf.
When Cindy Moore was tripped
by the Salukis' goalkeeper, Leanne
Dietrich converted the penalty into
a 1-0 lead on the penalty stroke.
Later, Dietrich broke away from
the 25 -yard line and blasted the -
ball into the net again.
Tonya Riehl played superbly in
net, recording another shutout.
At WOSSA on Thursday, the
Panthers won their pool by defeat-
ing Central Elgin of St. thomas 3-0
and Strathroy 2-0.
Scorers against St. Thomas were
Tina Campbell, Marcie Ellison, on
a penalty corner, and Becci Farqu-
har. Jenny Wareham recorded the
shutout.
Campbell scored in the first half
of play against Strathroy and Die-
trich potted one in the second.
Strathroy had one excellent scoring
opportunitybut Melanie Jones, af-
ter losing her stick, kicked the ball
to save the goal.
Although this reaction resulted in
a a penalty stroke for Strathroy,
Richt made the save look easy.
This victory advanced the Pan-
thers to the WOSSA final on Satur-
day.
After the first five minutes of
play, it was no contest for the Pan-
thers competitors, West Elgin.
"The girls put op a magnificent
display of field hockey as they
completely outgunned the team
from West Elgin," said coach Jim
Workman.
The 6-0 domination began early
in the first half when Dietrich hit
the mark. Farquhar followed with
two of her three goals. Jeanette
Kaak added two more to round out
the scoring.
Riehl recorded still another shut-
out.
South Huron now advances to
the Ontario Championships (OF -
SAA) tomorrow (Thursday) to Sat-
urday at Ridley College in St.
Catharines. The Panthers are
ranked second in the tournament
behind Agincourt Collegiate Insti-
tute of Scarborough. With the best
ranking the team has ever received,
they hope to return home with a
medal.
Mohawks trounce Flyers 15-3
EXETER - Joe Scherer is scor-
ing goals in numbers that would
make Wayne Gretzky proud.
In this last three games, all at
home, the rugged right -winger -has
scored 14 times. He racked up
three in the October. 15 game
against Lambeth Flyers, which the
Mohawks won 13-1. He bettered
that October 22 by tallying five
times against the Chatham Varco
Maroons, helping the Mohawks to
a 12-3 win.
But Scherer went one better Sun-
day night at the South Huron Rec
Centre when he netted six against
Lambeth, as the Mohawks blasted
the Flyers for the second -straight
time 15-3 to improve their record
to 4-0. It was the third straight time
the Mohawks hit double figures.
Scherer is not sure why he has
such a scoring touch right now.
"I really can't explain it. I am just
shooting the puck a lot more and
they all seem to be going in," said
Scherer.
Scherer credited his new fitness
program -and his linemates tor most
of the success he is having so far
this year.
"I .lost a lot of weight over the
summer which really helps me out.
I can stay out on the ice longer and
not get as tired and not take as long
to get from one point to another.
My stamina has really improved,
bur the biggest help has been
Brookscy (centre Gord Brooks)
and Pup, (left wing Kris Bedard).
"Gordie's skating like the wind
and is just so smart out there and
Hawks grounded by Mitchel!
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
played the Mitchell Hawks six
times last year and didn't lose to
their namesakes. What a difference
a year makes.
In their only game of the week,
the Exeter Hawks lost 5-2 to a
much stronger Mitchell team Fri-
day night at the South Huron Rec
Centre, to even their record at three
wins and three losses.
The Hawks were without head
coach Jack Nairn, who missed the
game because of a prior commit-
ment elsewhere. They did have
Jean-Paul Cousineau in the line up
for the first time this year, aftcr he
quit the St. Marys Jr. B Lincolns
earlier in the week.
Cousineau, last year's second
leading point -getter on the team,
re -joined the club at a most oppor-
tune time because laic in the sec-
ond period last -year's leading scor-
er Derek Shackleton left the game
after being slashed by a Mitchell
player.
Shackleton received a broken
hand and one broken finger and
will be out of the lineup indefinite-
ly, so Cousineau will be counted
on to help take up part of the slack.
Mitchell got on the board first,
taking a 1-0 lead into the second
period, but increased the lead to
two goals after scoring twice in the
second period and the home team
scoring once. Exeter scored again
mid -way in the third period to
make it a one goal deficit, but
Mitchell scored an insurance goal
with under five minutes to play and
added an empty -net tally with un-
der a minute left.
Assistant coach George Pratt Jr.
had full control of the team in
Nairn's absence and pulled starting
goalie Clint McCann in, favor of an
extra attacker to try an get the tying
goal, but that move backfired when
Darryl Elliot scored for Mitchell
into the empty net with 11 seconds,
left. The Hawks had good chances
to score in the last minute but
couldn't put one past Mitchell net -
minder Dennis Scherbarth when
they needed to, and either missed
the net or shot them right at Scher-
barth.

py's playing really great right now
too, but we really are clicking well
together," he said.
Sunday night the Mohawks
scored four times in the first, five
times in the second and added six
more in the third, while Bill Dark
gave up only one in each of the
three periods.
In addition to Scherer's six tal-
lies, Quincy Wilker had a hat. trick,
Jeff Shipley had a pair and singles
went to Bedard, Al Gates, Jeff Carr
and Paul Barton.
Dave Randerson, Bedard, Gates,
and Carr all had three assists in the
game, Bill Glover; Barton, and
Brooks all set up two goals each
and single assists went to Barry
Baynham, Wilkcr, Dale Timmer -
mans, Mark Sochncr and Shipley.
After playing three straight
games at home, the Mohawks head
to the road twice this weekend. Fri-
day night, they travel to Dorchester
for an 8:30 p.m. game against the
Dolphins and Sunday night they
move on to Ingersoll for a 7:30 p.m.
game against the B's.
Six goal scorer - Joe .scnerer, ngnt, of the Exeter Mohawks, battles
his way in front of Lambeth Flyers goalie Brad Gard en rout to one of
the six goals he scored Sunday night as the Mohawks grounded the
Flyers 15-3 at the South Huron Rec Centre.
Hands-on defence - Christine Rose, (14), and Michelle Ellison, of the South Huron District High Schoo
Senior Girl's Basketball team try to get a hands-on experience at playing defence as a Goderich Vikln
player gets ready to make a bounce pass, when those teams met at South Huron last Tuesday, in Hu
ron-Perth Conference play. The Panthers lost the match 33-23.
