Lucan OPP called to Arva break-in
LUCAN - During the past week, Ontario Provincial
Police in Lucan investigated 47 occurrences and nine
motor vehicle collisions. Most investigations were rou-
tine in nature. However four were notable.
On Tuesday, October 17 the business office at St.
John's Estates, in Arva was broken into sometime dur-
ing the night. The door was forced open and a red and
silver 3500 Honda generator was stolen.
A vehicle was found parked in an orchard on Satur-
day night, October 21, The driver and a female passen-
ger had alcohol in the vehicle and refused to leave
when directed to do so by the owner. Police were call
and the vehicle driver was arrested. Charged with hav-
ing care and control over 80 milligrams is Donald H.
McPhee, 28, of 179 Cambridge Street, Goderich, Onta-
rio.
Police also responded to a report of a party on Satur-
day night, about 11:30 p.m. in .West Nissouri Town-
ship involving several young offenders in an aban-
doned house with alcohol. Seven youths were charged
with liquor offenses as well as trespassing. Four youths
were taken to Lucan Detachment and released to their
parents. -
Another obscene telephone call was received in the
Granton and Lucan area over the weekend. Several
calls have been reported by residents from a male call-
er over the past few weeks. The suspect, sometimes de
scribed as having an East -Asian accent, repeatedly
calls with obscene comments. Police arc advising tc
record times and details of any such calls and to repor
these calls to police.
Three out of the nine accidents investigated by Lu
can O.P.P. involved personal injury with five peoplt
being injured. Only one accident resulted in any senor:
injune.S. At 2:55 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, a 198(
Hyundai driven by Alain Landry, 22, of 25B Elrnwooc
Street, Grand Bend was in a single vehicle accident of
Highway 4 near Mooresville. Landry's vehicle wa:
northbound when it left the road and struck a tree
Laundry was extricated from his vehicle by Lucan Fin
Department and taken to University Hospital with ma
jor injuries. .

October 23,29 is Block Parent Week. All member.
of the various Block Parent organizations are to be
commended and thanked for their time and effort it

SAINTSL - Mrs. Viola At-
kinson was humess for the October
17 A.C.W. meeting. President Rose
Cunningham was in charge. The
roll call was announced with a
poem on Thanksgiving. Nadine Be-
dell gave the treasurer's report and
Hazel Eaton read the minutes of the
last meeting. The Scripture reading
and Meditations prayers were led
by different members.
The members served lunch and
all enjoyed a social hour.
Roll call for the November meet-
ing to be held at Hazel Eatons No-
vember 14 at 8 o'clock, is to be a
verse or thought on Remembrance
day. The ladies planned another
dessert euchre and Bake sale to be
held on November 7.
The dessert euchre held on Octo-
ber 17 was a success with 10 tables
playing winners were: Marion Ab-
bott, Exeter, Iva Blair, Centralia
and Mabel Needham, Lucan. Mur-
ray Carter, Eva McLean, Lucan and
Hazel Cunningham.
Harry Carroll was winner of the
lucky chair prize. Mildred Hertzel,
Lucan and Marjorie Steeper, West
McGillivray won the grocery box-
es.

LUCAN - Sunday morning the
trio of Mr. Dan Wucrch, Mrs. Che-
ryl Wurech, and Mrs. Jane Bende
assisted Mr. Tim Kritzer in leading
the song service.
Rev. Roger Mason ministered
from Philippians 1:9. A mature

Mr. Verle Bende spoke Sunday
evening from Colossians 2:16-17.
Jewish Christians in this church
were trying to get other Christians
to follow the Old Testament Jewish
holy days. But. Hebrews 10:1 and
8:5 says this was only a shadow of
Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary to pay
the price for man's salvation.

GRANTON . Sylvia Beatson
who is a grade eleven student at
Medway Highschool, returned home
on Saturday, October 21 having
spent a week at the Terry Fox Ca-
nadian Youth Centre in Ottawa.
She was attending the "Encounters
with Canada" program for ages 15
to 17 from all over Canada. Many
Ottawa landmarks were visited and
the week's theme of Journalism and
Communications was studied brief-
ly.
Mrs. A. Santurc and Mr. and
Mrs. David Santure of Wayne,
Michigan, spent Sunday, October
15 with their uncle and aunt Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Hardie.
Larry Lewis of London spent
Sunday at his home in the village.
Mrs. V. Logan and her mother
Mrs. V. McComb of Woodstock
visited with Mr. and Mrs. R. Hardie
on Thursday of last week.
The United Church luncheon, ba-
zaar and tea were well attended and
were enjoyable on Saturday, Octo-
ber 21.
St.Thomas
At the St. Thomas' Anglican
Church on Sunday the Rev. Bever-
ley Wheeler led the service of morn-
ing prayer and spoke about injustice
in the world and seeking hope
through prayer. The lessons were
read by Ken Beatson and the mini -
SW.
Granton UC
Sunday, the Rev. Bruce Pierce's
message was entitled "The Rewards
of Returning" based on the parable
of the prodigal son. The lessons
were from Isaiah 61 and Luke 15.
Special music was provided in
three solos by Bill Whiting self -
accompanied on the guitar. Berna-
dine Kop was the bulletin steward.
Granton WI
The Granton Women's Institute
met at tate home of Mrs. Elmer
Harlton do Tuesday evening, Octo-
ber 27. when the roll call was an-
swered with a beef about packaged
products. The topic was Canadian
Industries and the motto "You can't
do today's job with yesterday's tools
and be in business tomorrow:.
Florence Riddell read articles
about white beans used in ice cream
making, from sheep to store, and
weather predictions.
Mrs. Harlon gave some house-
hold hints., told about a recent visit
to her daughter's home in San An-
tonio, Texas, and commented on
the new truck plant being esta-
blished in St. Thomas which is ex-
pected to'provide some 600 jobs.
A report of the arca convention
was given by Florence McRobert
and Muriel Lewis.
President Mrs. Lewis opened
with a reading "We are Grateful"
and gave a resume of the A.C.W.
W. Triennial Conference which she
attended recently in Kansas City,
Missouri.
At the Granton United Church on A presentation of gifts was made

to past president Florence Riddell
and past secretary -treasurer Olive
(P.) Hodgins.
Business discussion included a
donation to the 4H club, plans for
the next meeting and Remem-
brance Day.
Lunch was served by the hostess
and Mrs. Riddell.

The Granton 41-1 club held their
fifth meeting at the St. Thomas'
Anglican Church on Thursday
evening, October 19. President Ca-
sandra Harding opened with the 4H
pledge and the roll call was taken.
Leader Deanna Beatson led a dis-
cussion about microwave safety
and cooking and the girls did an ac-
tivity about judging different types
of cookware.

Pincombc demonstrated making
bunwiches. Then Casandra and
Katherine Harding demonstrated an
unusual device that peLls, slices
and cores apples. The meeting was
closed with the 4H motto. Melanie
Bcatson was the secretary and re-
porter.
