Fines for traffic offences
EXETER - Christine A. Cunningham, London,
pleaded guilty to following too closely when she ap-
peared before Doug Wedlake in JP court on October
17. The charge was laid after a three -car accident on
Highway 81 in Stephen township on August 13. The
accused ran into the rear of the second of two cars
when the first slowed to make a left turn, and the next
stopped to the left of the first one. She paid her
$53.75 before leaving court.
Steven Delong, Stanley township, was fined $500
and had his licence suspended for a further six months
after pleading guilty to driving while suspended He
had been stopped in Usbome township on July 5, and
was convicted in provincial court the previous week
for giving his brother's name at that time instead of
his own.
Thomas R. Barry, Huron Park, was convicted of
causing unnecessary noise,by squealing his tires de-
spite a not guilty plea. Ben Hoogenboom had seen
him leave the Hasty Market lot and heard the squeal of
tires on. July 21. The next night Hoogenboom spotted
the accused back at the Hasty Market, and went over
and spoke to him.
According to testimony, Barry "mumbled an apolo-
gy", then headed south with tires squealing, leaving
skid marks on the parking lot and the road totalling 22
meters.
Taking into account four previous convictions for
the same offence, Wedlake found Barry guilty and fated
him $150.
Michael R. Webb, RR 1 Dashwood, pleaded not
guilty to speeding 126 in an 80 zone, and failing to
wear a complete seat belt assembly. He had been
picked up on radar on Highway 84 on August 4. The
seatbelt charge was laid after the officer followed Webb
• into a parking lot in Hensall.
Webb admitted he was speeding, but figured he was
going about 100 km. He said he had just unclasped
his seatbelt. When asked to fasten it again, he had to
first move a jacket.
Wedlake gave Webb the benefit of the doubt on the
seatbelt, but found him guilty of speeding and fined
him $107.25.
Peter J Labreche was found guilty in his absence of
driving while suspended. He had been recognized by a
police officer as he drove west on Highway 83, then
turned onto concession 18-19. The accused could not
produce a valid licence. He was fined $750 and a fur-
ther six months were added to his suspension. This is
Labreche's fourth conviction on the same charge.
Briefs from Hensall council
HENSALL - The council of the
village of Hensall is proclaiming
November 20 to 26 Recycling
Week. Two suggestions for spe-
cial event was finding if there is a
place to send all the fine paper that
comes into offices, and setting
aside a day for people to bring in
hazardous waste materials.
Council passed a recycling bylaw
at their October meeting. The draft
was amended to eliminate the im-
position of fines for non-
compliance. Councillors agreed
peer pressure and working to pro-
moting the benefits of recycling
were better options than fining
those who don't cooperate.
The municipality will charge $5
to replace a blue box.
