Cunningham, London, pleaded guilty to following too closely when she ap- peared before Doug Wedlake in JP court on October 17. The charge was laid after a three -car accident on Highway 81 in Stephen township on August 13. The accused ran into the rear of the second of two cars when the first slowed to make a left turn, and the next stopped to the left of the first one. She paid her $53.75 before leaving court. Steven Delong, Stanley township, was fined $500 and had his licence suspended for a further six months after pleading guilty to driving while suspended He had been stopped in Usbome township on July 5, and was convicted in provincial court the previous week for giving his brother's name at that time instead of his own. Thomas R. Barry, Huron Park, was convicted of causing unnecessary noise,by squealing his tires de- spite a not guilty plea. Ben Hoogenboom had seen him leave the Hasty Market lot and heard the squeal of tires on. July 21. The next night Hoogenboom spotted the accused back at the Hasty Market, and went over and spoke to him. According to testimony, Barry "mumbled an apolo- gy", then headed south with tires squealing, leaving skid marks on the parking lot and the road totalling 22 meters. Taking into account four previous convictions for the same offence, Wedlake found Barry guilty and fated him $150. Michael R. Webb, RR 1 Dashwood, pleaded not guilty to speeding 126 in an 80 zone, and failing to wear a complete seat belt assembly. He had been picked up on radar on Highway 84 on August 4. The seatbelt charge was laid after the officer followed Webb • into a parking lot in Hensall. Webb admitted he was speeding, but figured he was going about 100 km. He said he had just unclasped his seatbelt. When asked to fasten it again, he had to first move a jacket. Wedlake gave Webb the benefit of the doubt on the seatbelt, but found him guilty of speeding and fined him $107.25. Peter J Labreche was found guilty in his absence of driving while suspended. He had been recognized by a police officer as he drove west on Highway 83, then turned onto concession 18-19. The accused could not produce a valid licence. He was fined $750 and a fur- ther six months were added to his suspension. This is Labreche's fourth conviction on the same charge. Briefs from Hensall council HENSALL - The council of the village of Hensall is proclaiming November 20 to 26 Recycling Week. Two suggestions for spe- cial event was finding if there is a place to send all the fine paper that comes into offices, and setting aside a day for people to bring in hazardous waste materials. Council passed a recycling bylaw at their October meeting. The draft was amended to eliminate the im- position of fines for non- compliance. Councillors agreed peer pressure and working to pro- moting the benefits of recycling were better options than fining those who don't cooperate. The municipality will charge $5 to replace a blue box. * * * * The manager of the local liquour store will be allowed to determine the hours of business at the outlet on November 11. *. * * * The Hensall BIA are sponsoring a number of activities between now and the end of the year. The annual tree -lighting and carolling is scheduled for Friday, December 1. The house and apartment Christ- mas decorating contest will be held again this year. There will also be a store/business window category. * * * * 'rhe Economic Development Committee reported that a bean cos- tume ordered locally was unsatisfac- tory, and will be returned. The Committee is ordering a $3,600 one from a Scarborough company. The elaborate outfit comes. com- plete with interior fan to exhaust warm air from the top of the head, and extend the wearing time. There were no injuries, and dam- age was moderate. The Exeter OPP were called to four other accidents during the week of October 15-21. On Mon- day a vehicle driven by Brian Regi- cr, Dashwood, collided with a com- bine operated' by Henry Stasik, RR2 Hensall. Both vehicles had minor damages. Regier was slight- ly injured. . On Tuesday Adrian Kester, RR2 Dashwood, lost control of the vehi- cle he was driving on Main St. in Zurich when (lit off by another ve- hicle. He struck a parked vehicle owncd by Mary Murchand, Lon- don. Both vehicles were moderate- ly damaged. Vehicles driven by Shelly Hay, Hensall and Roger Keller, London, collided on Highway 4 at the north end of Exeter on Saturday. Dam- age to the Hay • vehicle was light, and the Keller vehicle was moder- ately damaged. Both Keller and his wife Barbara sustained minor inju- ries. The police remind drivers to "Buckle Up", as they are still checking for seatbelt violations. Board is expected to contribute $1,000 toward the cost. * * * * Complaints have been received about the smell of burning leaves permeating laundry on the line, and the interior of homes with wi •1 left open. Councillor Jeff Reabum said that a composting program at the landfill site would be one solu- tion. Councillor Peter Groot sug- gested that the village find out what other municipalities do about the 1 1 1 • 11 WW1 veteran s - The Exeter Legion hosted a Senior Veterans Dinner Sunday aftemoon for all war vete- rans over 70 years of age. When these veteran appreciation dinners started 24 years ago 264 World War 1 veterans were present. Six attended this year's dinner so organizers opened it to all veterans over 70.
