Panthers finish in first place
By Jim Workman
The South Huron District High
School field hockey Panthers won
their last three league games to end
up in first place in the standings.
At home on Wednesday, the girls
hosted the two Stratford teams
(Central and Northwestern). In
game one the Panthers beat Central
1=0. Even though the Panthers
dominated the entire game, they
only scored once on a goal by
April Lewis.
In game two, the locals beat
Stratford Northwestern 3-0 on
goals by Tina Campbell, Kim Lin -

gard and Jeanette Kaak.
The team travelled to St. Marys
on Thursday for a game that was
full of excitement and at times
conflict. •
Tonya Riehl was outstanding in
net, turning back the St. Marys ef-
forts at goal. She was superbly
backed up by Melanie Jones.
There was a period of conflict
when SH was awarded a penalty
stroke. In Leanne Dietrich's at-
tempt the two umpires had a disa-
•
greement over the success of the
stroke. The outcome was unclear as
there was no mesh in the goal.
Dietrich made no mistake in the
retake, giving the Panthers a 1-0
win to finish their regular season
with a record of 10-0-0.
The girls will now play in the
semi-finals on Thursday at 3:30
p.m. at South Huron.
