They beat the Chatham Maroons 7- 4 in Chatham last Wednesday in the season -opener and pounded the under -staffed Lambeth Flyers 13-1 Sunday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. Mohawks coach Dave Revington said it was hard to keep player's minds on defence in Sunday night's wide-open contest. "I think some of the guys were going out there for individual ef- forts fforts tonight but they all would like to like get a point or two this early in the season," said Revington. The Flyers only brought 12 skat- ers for the game and the Mohawks took full advantage outplaying Lambeth in every aspect of the game. If it were not for some spec- tacular saves by Flyers goalie Ke- vin Cole, the Mohawks could have easily scored 25 goals. Mohawks goalie Bill Dark said games like that are a little difficult for him to keep his concentration with so much of the play in the oth- er end of the ice, but naturally pre- fers a high -scoring contest to . a close one. "It is tough to keep my concen- tration in a game like this. When we have the puck I try and relax and not let my mind wander and when they get the.puck I get ready to make the saves I need. We out- played them badly and got the goals we needed. I think those games are easier on me because if we had outplayed them and they had kept the score close then any mistake I might make is magnified even more,", said Dark. It was the first Mohawk game in the South Huron Rec Centre since workers sprayed a black vapor bar- rier on the walls of the arena, creat- ing a possible hazard for goaltend- ers, but Dark didn't find too many problems with the dark walls. "It was not a big problem picking up the puck. I found the black walls brings out the ice even more. The only shots I found a little tricky were high ones from over around centre ice. Others didn't really bother me too much," said Dark. Three Mohawk players picked up hat tricks in Sunday's contest. Kris Bedard, Joe Scherer and Bill Glo- ver each scored three times, while Randy Bailey and Dave Randerson each netted a pair. Scherer added four assists, Al Gates had three, two each went to Bedard, Jeff McClenaghan, Quincy Wilker, Gord Brooks, Barry Bayn- ham, Greg Snyder, and Jeff Warren. Brooks left the game in the sec- ond period, when he was cut by an errant Flyer's stick. He was taken to South Huron Hospital where he re- ceived five stitches. The Mohawks outshot the Flyers 43-15 over the 60 minutes. Exeter 7 Chatham 4 The Mohawks were impressive in their season -opener in Chatham as well outshooting a veteran Maroon hockey club 42-21 over the contest, right in their building. The Mohawks were tied 1-1 after one period o _ lay eld a slight 4-3 lead in the seco , but exploded for three third -period goals, two com- ing while. enjoying a man - advantage, to win the game. Randerson had the top -scoring honors in this game, firing a hat trick, while Bedard and Wilker each netted a pair. ?aul Barton set up four goals, Wilker a pair and Randerson, Scherer, Mark Soehner, and Bill Glover set up one each. Next game for the Mohawks is Sunday night when the Maroons will be at the SHRC for a 7:30 p.m. game. Friday the 13th unlucky for Hawks EXETER - Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for the Exeter Hawks who were beaten 5-4 by the Seaforth Centenaires Friday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. The loss dropped the Hawks' record to 1-2. It looked like the Hawks were going to blow Seaforth away early as they held a 3-0 Lead just six -and - a -half minutes into the game. Sea - forth managed to get one back for the end of the first period taking the play to Exeter in the second but the Hawks still lead 4-3 heading into the third. Seaforth tied the game at 2:38 of the third and took the lead for good at 11:27, scoring the winning goal with the man -advantage, after Hawks' Bob Hern picked up a checking -from -behind penalty. Derek Shackleton gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead when he scored an unassisted, short-handed goal at 2:03 of the first and Harlen Tinney made it 2-0 just over two minutes later after being set up by the new- est Hawk, Scott Taylor. Taylor had been picked up earlier in the week after he quit the St. Marys Lincolns. Jesse Henderson made it a 3-0 contest from Mark Reid and Hern just two minutes after that but the Centenaires woke up and starting forcing some of the play to the Hawks. David Dalrymple's second -period goal, from Joe Weston staked the Hawks to a 4-3 lead after two peri- ods. Hawks coach Jack Nairn was not happy with the turn of events in the game. "We took too many dumb penal- ties and they cashed in. They. (Sea - forth), are definitely an improved hockey club but we outshot them and should have beaten them but the penalties just killed us. We have to just practice, practice, practice to get the players to play an entire hockey game so we don't have an- other letdown," said Nairn. The Hawks- were assessed 29 minutes in penalties but two un- sportsmanlike conduct penalties and two checking from behind and one instigator penalty is what upset Nairn the most. The Hawks outshot Seaforth 27- 19 in the game. Despite being their third sched- uled home game this year, it was the first game played at the SHRC and it was the first game played since workers installed a black va- por barrier on the walls to help with the insulation of the arena. It didn't seem to bother most players too much, but both goalies complained it was hard to see rising shots that came in higher than the boards, out of the black walls at them. Next game for the Hawks is Fri- day night when they play in Sea - forth at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night the Hawks travel to Wellesley to take on the Applejacks at 8:15 p.m. Molting Hawks open with win SARNIA - The Exeter Molting Hawks opened their hockey season last Tuesday in Sarnia as they edged the old Oilers 5-4. Ernie Ahrens, Ron Moore, Scott Burton, Brian Hodgins and Bob Parsons each notched one goal. Bob McDonald had 2 assists while Burton, Hodgins, Moore, Ahrens, Parsons and Walt Tiede - man each added single assists. This week they played host to London Doughboys Monday while Friday they travel to Huron Park to play Stephen Township. This year's team has Glen Stire in goal. Facemask infraction - Dave O'Connor, of the South Huron District High School Senior Boys Football team, right, gets his helmet yanked by a Listowel Lord player, who was caught by the officials for the il- legal infraction, during the Panthers 34-6 romp over the Lords Thursday aftemoon at South Huron. • Slim trim Joe blasts three so N + Holding his position - Joe Scherer, of the Exeter Mohawks, stakes his position in front of Lambeth Flyer netminder Kevin Cole during the home opener for the Mohawks Sunday night at the South Huron Rec Centre. Trying to move Scherer is Ron Sloan but Scherer wouldn't budge as he was one of three Mo- hawks to fire hat tricks in the 13-1 romp over the Flyers. Football Panthers defeat Lords By Michelle Ellison • EXETER - After being out of league play for a week, both of South Huron District High School's Junior and Senior football teams swept victories over the Listowel Lords on home turf last Thursday. South Huron's Senior Panthers were able to get many players off the bench. Coach, Ron Bogart, was pleased with their performance. "Several players who usually do not get a chance to play much got their chance and did a very good job," said Bogart. "Our bench is much better than perhaps we thought it was." Chris Haugh led the Panthers' of- fee with six carries for 88 yards artd he put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a nine yard touchdown run. Quarterback 1-Iarlen Tinnev made a pass to Chris Eccles for a two part convert on the play. John Gollem made his debut as a starting senior Panther and ran very well. He ran 'for a three -yard run touchdown in the first quarter as well. Dave O'Connor kicked the convert and the Panthers led 15-0. Dan Weigand came through with a one -yard run touchdown and Tin- ney completed a 22 -yard pass to O'Connor for a touchdown in the second quarter. O'Connor made one convert. SH closed their scoring in the third quarter when Tinney co, pleted a 12 -yard touchdown pass u Jeff DenOtter to give the locals a 34-0 shut -out going into the final quarter. Unfortunately the Lords caught the Panthers sleeping on defense and allowed a 72 -yard pass and run. Justin O'Rourke made the tack- le at the 30 -yard line. A roughing call on Norm Atkins, a 12 -yard run by Listowel and an offside call on SH put the ball on the one -and -a -half yard line with seven minutes remaining in the game. In the next play, Listowel spun off the Panthers' tackles and fell into the end zone for a touchdown on the second last play of the game. Doug Clark blocked the convert and the Panthers took a 34-6 win to ' advance their league record to 2-0 and their overall record 3-0-1.. FLsides the one break in defence, the Panthers' played tough. Thcy held Listowel to 47 yards rushing and just three first downs. Atkins led SH's defence with 15 tackles. Clark made .12 and Mark Burton and Brcnt McDonald had nine each.
