ways been Jos Bervoerts' dream.
It began to come true when he and
his wife Jantina bought the former
Barry and Brian's barber shop on
Main Street last year. Renovations
were based on the concept of a stu-
dio -gallery.
Bervoerts admires artistic talent.
As an artist himself - his medium

"It is very important for a grow-
ing town like Exeter to have a
showplace to display local talent.
There's a lot of fine artists around,"
Bervoerts explained.
Versatile, multi -talented Engelina
Van Essen is an excellent choice as
the gallery's first exhibitor. She is
well known for her skills with
wool from spinning through dying,
knitting and weaving to wall hang-
ings, her painted -silk scarves and
her original designs in cloth.
Van Essen's work as a fibre artist
has evolved from a lifelong interest
in crafts.
"My hands are always itching to
do things. I see a craft and say 'I
could do that too.' Whatever I do is
a gift from God, and brings out
something of the Creator in me,"
Van Essen said.
She first began working in clay
soon after her husband Henry was
first appointed as minister of Bethel
Reformed Church in 1973. Wed-
nesday was the only night Henry
was free to babysit, and that hap-
pened to be the night pottery class-
es were offered at South Huron Dis-
trict High School.
Since then, she has taken courses
with renowned potters Richard Gill
and Matthias Ostermann. In 1987
she earned a ceramics certificate
from St. Laurence College in
Brockville.
'Van Essen began quilting in
1975, has attended workshops with
several internationally known quil-
ters, taught courses in basic quilt-
ing, and exhibited at juried shows.
The contemporary wall quilts to
be shown at Four Seasons contain
no batting. They are made to hang
on walls. All are of pure cotton, or
cotton blends.
Van Essen's love of colour and de-
sign is immediately apparent in this
