F. Palen __.. Guest Sports /L.__ OD OP MI il• Colurnn Mike Turnmer, Editor • Of The Independent Newspaper in Listowel is our guest columnist this week. Imagine... Just the other day, someone else was trying to tell me wrestling is fake. This isn't the Greco -style wrestling you see at the Olympics. This is the Hulk -style wrestling you see on weekend television. Okay, I admit it. There have been times when I've found myself seated in front of the boob tube, catching up on what's happening with Macho Man, Honky Tonk, Rowdy Roddy, the Hulk' as in Ho- gan, not as in big and green), and Miss Elizabeth. And I'll even go so far as to admit I stay on top of what's going on in the world of wrestling. But detractors of the spectacle of professional rasslin' seem intent on bringing it down. Mind you these are the same people who will sit glued to the set, watching wrestling, and then insist it is fake. It's almost like a situation that arose a number of years ago, out in sunny California. It seems that something went amiss at a televi- sion station, and signals got crossed. Instead of the usual prime time family fare, viewers were subjected to movies of the "blue" persua- sion.It seems this went on for quite some time, and of course there were calls from indignant viewers to the station, most of which were to the effect of, "this program I've been watching for the last hour - and -a -half is disgusting." But getting back to the manly art of wrestling, have you ever no- ticed that detractors of the pastime always start out by saying, "Well, if it isn't fake, how come..." That would suggest they aren't nearly as firm in their resolve as they would have you believe. It's true that in certain parts of the United States, pro.wrestling has been reclassed as "entertainment" rather than "a sporting event." The reason for this is simple. The restrictions that would have to be placed on wrestling as a sport would be far more stringent than they. would be on wrestling as a source of entertainment. Heaven forbid that they should ever take away Hacksaw Jim Duggan's two-by-four, the Honky Tonk Man's guitar,. or for that matter, the ever-present folding metal chair. Let's face it, wrestling is many things - beauties and beasts, good guys and bad guys, friends and foes, acrobats and baseball bats. Go tell the people who are raking in millions of dollars parading around in their underwear and screaming at the crowd that wrestling is fake. They're just liable to say, "Gee, there's a revelation. How are those studies in nuclear physics going?" In football, players score a touchdown and do an inane dance in the end zone, jumping up and down - not unlike in wrestling. In hockey, players legally slam themselves into opponents and at times partake of all-out brawls - not unlike in wrestling. In baseball, players and managers alike square off verbally with of- ficials, screaming at the top of their lungs - not unlike in wrestling. Go ahead, try and convince me wrestling is fake. Sure. Next you'll be telling me a former player, the stature of say, a Pete Rose, who became a manager in major leagde baseball, will be turfed out of the game for allegedly gambling on his own team. Sure.
