Cross-country meet goes ahead
EXETER - Despite the rain and
cold, area public schools held their
annual cross-country meet at the
South Huron District High School
field last Tuesday morning and Ex-
eter Public School took two of six
team titles.
Exeter took first place in the In-
termediate and Senior Boys divi-
sions, while Zurich took first in
Junior Boys, Stephen worn Junior
Girls, Hensall won Intermediate
girls, and Usborne was topsin the
Senior Girls class.
McCurdy was first in Junior
Boys and Junior Girls, Usborne
was second in Intermediate Boys
and Girls, while. Stephen was sec-
ond in Senior Boys and Exeter sec-
ond in Senior Girls.
Zurich was third in Senior Boys
and Girls, Stephen second -in Inter-
mediate boys and Girls and Us -
borne took third in Junior Boys and
Hensall third in Junior Girls.
Usborne's Carrie Simpson won
the Senior Girls' race, Judi Wilson
from McCurdy, was second and
Jaime McGee from Zurich finished

LAMBETH - The Exeter Mo-
hawks recorded a pair of wins in
their final two pre -season games as
they get ready to open their South-
ern Senior A hockey season this
week.
Friday night they downed the
Dorchester Dolphins 0-4 in Dor-
chester and pounded the Lambeth
Flyers 20-6, in Lambeth, Saturday
night.
According to Mohawk manager
Bob Rowe, the reason for the high
score against Lambeth was the Fly-
ers have been having trouble get-
ting players out for the team and
was just barely able to put together
a team for this game.
Last Sunday, October 1, the Fly-
ers were scheduled to play the Mo-
hawks at the Lucan Arena but
called that game off when they
couldn't put a team together. Rowe
said Lambeth will be a better team
once they start the season and he

crossed the finish line first in the
Senior Boys race, Gavin Snell of
Exeter was second, while teammate
Willy Partridge was third overall.
Hensall Public School had first
and third positions in the Interme-
diate Girls race. Cara Gardiner won
the race, while Melissa Masse was
third. Zurich's Elizabeth Lovie was
second.
Exeter had the top two finishers
in the Intermediate Boy's race, with
Michael Coolman the race _winner
and David Farquhar right behind.
Nick Parsons from Stephen was
third.
Paul Barton and Les Arts each
scored twice to pace the Mohawk
attack 'day night in Dorchester.
Barry Ba Dave Randerson,
7luiticy 'WI cr, Jcfi 'Shipley,
Randy Bailey, and Jeff Carr picked
up single goals.
Bill Dark played net for the Mo-
hawks for the first two periods and
was relieved by Jack Nigicura in
the third. The two were battling for
the back-up.spot behind Rick-Pi-
kul.
The Mohawks start the season
for real tonight, Wednesday, in
Chatham against the Maroons and
will open the home season Sunday
night at 7:30 against Lambeth at
the South Huron Rcc Centre.

Stephen's Melissa Hayter was the
winner of the Junior Girl's race,
Sonjin Inlakhana of McCurdy was
second and Carrie Consitt of Hen-
salt was third.
Zurich's Joey Forrester won the
Junior Boy's race, followed by Jeff
Campbell of Zurich in second place
and Derrick Etherington from Us -
borne third.

Runners at Kitchener meet

KITCHENER - South Huron Dis-
trict High School'scross coyntry
team attended a meet in Kitchener
last Thursday. Each race included
300-460 runners and the Panthers
brought in some impressive finish-
es.
Jamie Dougall came through with
SH's best placing of 54th. Matt
Miller, also running for midget
boys, placed 250th.
In the Junior boys' division, Day
Vanderlaan came in 67th, Brett
Rideout 80th, David ,Schwindt
198th, Shawn McFalls 251st and
Skip Pavlick 326th.
SH's Junior girls had difficulties
with injuries as Nicole Gill and
Kim VanDongen were forced to
drop out of the race.
However, Charlene Regier placed
103rd, Carrie Lynn Ducharme
114th and Anna Szabo 121st in the
Junior girls' race.
In Senior boys, Scott Wellington
and Andrew Oswald ran well plac-
ing -96th and 119th respectively.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the Panthers
held their own South Huron Invita-
tional meet. On Friday the team
travels to Banting in London for an-
other run.

MITCHELL - In Huron -Perth
field hockey play last week, South
Huron District High. School's team
travelled to Mitchell for back-to-
back league games.
Although the girls didn't quite
play up to par, they still managed to
take a 4-1 victory over Mitchell and
a 2-1 win over Listowel.
Against Mitchell, Tina Campbell
opened scoring for the Panthers but
the Blue Devils answered before
the end of the first.half of play.
In the second half, Shannon
McBride, SucAnne Soldan and
Lynn Workman came through with
a goal each to take the 4-1 victory.
The locals also defeated Listowel
2-1. April Lewis netted SH's first
goal of the game and rookie, Work-
man put her second of the day past
the Blue Devil's goaltender.
The Panthers meet Stratford Cen-
tral and Stratford Northwestern at
home today to continue league play.
This weekend the team attends a
tournament in Toronto.
