Irish unbeaten after two games
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish have
gotten their season off to a good
start, winning their first two con-
tests of the young hockey season
last week.
Last Wednesday, they scored
five times in the third period and
handed the Wellesley Applejacks
an 8-2 loss at the Lucan•Arena and
overcame a 4-2 deficit to defeat the
Exeter Hawks 6-4 Friday night at
the Stephen Township Arena in
Huron Park.
The win at home in the first
game was especially pleasing to
new Irish coach Ken Needham.
"It's nice to win the first won
here at home. They, (Wellesley),
were really shorthanded and that
really showed with those third -
period goals. But we were showing
a lot of good things out there and
working with different line combi-
nations," said Needham after
Wednesday's win.
Needham said he wanted his
team to play a physcial game
against Wellesley because they
were missing several players and
felt their bumping tired the Apple-
jacks out in the third period.
The Applejacks got a good per.
formace out of starting goalie Der-
ek Swtitzer for the first two periods
as they trailed only 3-2 after two
periods but ran out of gas in the
third.
Andy Ross opened the scoring
for the Irish from Greg Deprest at
6:59 of the first. Deprest finished
the game with six points, three
goals and three assists.
Ross' goal came 15 seconds after
John Frankom gave the Applejacks
a 1-O lead.
The visitors took a 2-1 lead two
minutes later when Sam Kulaforski
scored but John McEachem got
that ba ck for the Irish four minutes
later, from Deprest and Joe Febrey.
The Irish took the lead for good
on Febrey's power -play goal, from
Brian Schuyler and Rick Weishar,
the only goal of the second frame.
The Irish third -period onslaught
started at 3:33 with McEachem's
goal from Schuyler and Febrey and
was followed by Deprest's first of
three, at 4:44 from Ross and Dar-
ren Neil and the three combined
again just over a minute later to
make it 6-2.
Neil picked up an empy-net
marker from Deprest and Ross with
1:58 left and Deprest completed his
hat trick, a solo effort, with one
tick left on the clock.
Lucan 6 Exeter 4
Friday night in Huron Park, the
Irish fell behind 4-2 mid way in The
second period but rallied to take a
5-4 lead before the second was his-
tory. They picked up an insurance
goal in the third and held the Hawk
shooters in check the rest of the
way.
Tied 2-2, Needham pulled start-
ing goalie Jason Rivard after one
period in favor and Dan Jenken and
it worked as the Irish pulled out the
win.
Scoring for the Irish were; Rick
Schuyler from.McEachem and Fe-
brey, Jack Legg from Jeff Hirtzell
and John Sharpe, Weishar from ,Fe-
brey and Brian Reath, Weishar
from Shuyler and Febrey, Neil from
Ross and Deprest with the game
winner and Ross from Neil and De-
prest.
The next game for the Irish is to-
night, Wednesday, when the Mitch-
ell Hawks play at the Lucan Arena
at 8:15 p.m. Friday night the Irish
travel to Tavistock to take on the
Braves at 8:30 p.m.

ond.
