Hawks whip Tavistock Braves
Continued from page 13
Cullitons Jr. B team '
Among the newcomers on for-
ward lines are; Joe - Weston, Tim
Moore, Paul Manders, Bob Hern
and Jesse Henderson.
Due to construction and ice prob-
lems at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre, the Hawks are forced to play
their first two games in other build-
ings. They will open the regular
season Friday night in Huron Park
' at 8:30 against the Lucan Irish and
Quinn is not very happy about that.
"I am not at all happy but we
have no control over the situation
and we will try and make do the
best we can. It would be nice for
some of our new guys to get a game
under their belts in our building
sometime soon," said Quinn.
SHRC manager Cam Stewardson
said the earliest he, could start put-
ting the ice in Iould be today,
Wednesday,which means the ice
would not be ready until Monday. It
will all depend upon how quickly
the steel cladding can be applied to
the exterior of the Rec Centre. and
how quickly the architect can give
his go-ahead.
Stcwardson said his crews are
ready to work around the clock get-
ting the ice installed once the all
clear is given.
Sunday's Hawks game which was •
scheduled for the SHRC Sunday at
7:30 will be played at the same
time at the Hensall Arena.
Football Panthers split two games
Continued from page 13
According to coach Ron Bogart,
SH played a good passing and run-
ning game but three opportunities
were missed which could have re-
sulted in 64-6 victory.
The Panthers fumbled on the sev-
en and 10 -yard lines and had a pass
intercepted inside the 20 -yard line.
The Panthers defence completely
shut down Tillsonburg's offence as
the Geminis never gained a first
down except through SH's penalties
which allowed their opponents to
gain 90 yards.
Norm Atkins led SH's defence
with 11 key tackles, Mark Burton
and Glen McBeath made nine, Jus-
tin O'Rourke and Laurie Chalmers
made six and Brent McDonald had
five.
Bogart hopes to cut down on pen-
alties and continuc to play well as
Midgets
By Michelle Ellison
Last week, South Huron District
High School's Midget girls' basket-
ball team played two league games
and an exhibition game. The Pan-
thers took one win and two losses,
Last Monday, the girls defeated
Dorchester in a home exhibition
game 35-14. The Panthers out-
played their opponents all game
with Julie Kaak leading SH on -of-
fence with eight points. Chris Pass-
more had six, while Becky Hart-
man, Mikala MacDougall and
Chris Schade each added two.
In league play last Wednesday in
Goderich, SH proved to be little
competitionfor the over -powering
Midget Vikings. The Panthers
came away with a disappointing
win one
31-9 loss.
MacDougall came through with
seven of SH's nine points and Lia-
na Goldsworthy added two.
However, the Panthers played a
very competitive game on Monday
against F.E. Madill of Wingham in
league play.
Despite a slight four -point margin
after the first half of play, the Mus-
tangs overcame the Panthers in the
next quarter making it a 24-22
game.
After a fight to the finish, the
Mustangs took the 30-29 win.
Stacey Thurman was top scorer
for SH with 11 points. Schade fol-
lowed with six and Minday Bell
and DeAnn Foreman added four a
piece.
Panthers
By Michelle Ellison
EXETER- Last Thursday, South
Htmoti District High School's girls'
field hockey team took first place
in the Huron -Perth standings by de-
feating Listowel and St. Mary's in
a double header on home turf.
After a slow start against Listow-
el, the Panthers completely mon-
opolized the game. This allowed
for some younger team members to
get in some field time.
Tina Campbell led the scoring
for SH with two goals. Marcie El-
lison, Leanne Dietrich and Sueanne
Soldan each added one a piece.
Tonya Riehl in goal was credited
with the 5-0 shutout. -
In the second game against peren-
nial opponents, St. Marys, the
Panthers defeated their HP rivals
take pair
with another 5-0 decision.
. "The girls were probably pleas-
antly surprised to obtain an unusu-
ally easy victory," said coach Jim ,
Workman. -
Jeanette Kaak came through with
two goals to lead SH's scoring.
Shots from Cindy Moore, Ellison
and Campbell also found the net.
the Panthers are scheduled to meet
Godcrich tomorrow at home.
Although SH's junior Panthers
were forced to travel short staffed to
Tillsonburg and were defeated 26-6
by their competitors, they played
well in an underofficiated game
against the Tillsonburg Geminis.
"It was an aggressively played
game sometimes beyond the limits
of the rules;" commented coach
Dave Cox.
Cox also said that he was quite
proud of his team who, for the most
part, didn't retaliate against their
overly aggressive opponents. While
three Panthers were asked to leave
the game for such reasons a fight-
ing, Tillsonburg had five players
forced off the field.
Jason McNeil scored SH's only
touchdown of the game on a short
run in the first half of the game but
Tillsonburg took the 26-6 win.
