The Express dropped the opening game of the series September 23, but came back to even the series last Sunday in Exeter, which set up Friday's championship game. The Express scored early and of- ten Friday night. They held a 14-4 lead after their half of the sixth in- ning and had a chance to end the game early on the mercy rule, (leading by 10 or more runs after five or more complete innings), but Lakeside scored once in the sixth to make it a nine -run deficit and kept the game alive. The Express came up with an- other run in their half of the sev- enth inning to make it a 15-5 game with another chance to end the game early if they had held Lake- side scoreless in their half of the seventh. They came to life and scored five times that inning, which put Lakeside behind by only five runs but were held in check the rest of the way by the Express, who held on for the win. Exeter scored once in the first frame on just two hits. Kevin Hern -singled with two out, went to sec- ond on an error and scored when Dave Parsons singled. Five runs came across the plate for Exeter in the second stanza. Brian Mercer led off with a single, Pete Heeney followed with a walk, and one out later Darcy Martin belted a three -run homer. After Martin's blast, " Rob Dickey and Barry Baynham singled, with Dick- ey scoring on Kevin Hern's single and Baynham scoring on a Lake- side miscue in the outfield. Exeter tacked on another in the third on just one hit. The solo hit was a one -out triple by Mercer, who later scored on a passed ball. The Express scored twice more in the fourth inning and four times in the fifth. In the fourth Baynham led off with a base on balls, and scored when the next batter, Kevin Hern, tripled. Hen scored when Walt Parkinson singled. In the fifth, Doug Schade and Royals even final series EXETER - A 17-8 victory Sun- day night at the South Huron Rec. Centre tied the Exeter. The Royals pounded out a sea- sons -high 15 hits in the sloppily played contest as shortstop Dan Heywood led the way with four hits in six trips, four RBI's and three runs scored. Jim Allison add- ed two hits and scored four times. Starting pitcher Derwyn Hodgins also contributed two hits and scored twice. Right fielder Jim Lewis singled three times, drove in a run and scored a run. Catcher Tom Tordoff singled and scored two runs. Scott Brintnell, Brent Dawson and Bob Cornish also sin- gled. Hodgins and Greg Wise split the pitching duties with Wise picking up the victory as he threw five in- nings, giving up five runs on only four hits. In the first game, played in Mil- verton last Wednesday night, un- earned runs in the sixth and seventh innings proved to be the difference as Milverton edged Exeter 3-1. Starting pitcher Heywood threw six and a third strong innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, on just two hits. Heywood struck out five and walked one. Hodgins provided hitless relief while allowing an unearned run. Royals managed five hits off Mil- verton pitching as Heywood sin- gled twice and doubled in four trips. Rod Johnson and Dawson also added singles. The third -and -deciding game of the series was scheduled for Tues- day night in Milverton. Last Wednesday, the Panthers travelled to Goderich for their sec- ond league game of the season but returned with a 34-11 loss. The Vikinis jumped ahead of the Panthers taking a 21-6 lead, in the first half of the game. SH couldn't find the basket and failed to narrow the margin, losing 34-11. Michelle Ellison led scoring for win once SH with four points. Christine Rose, Liz Mol and Andrea Bell had two and Jultn-Merner added one. - On Monday, the girls hosted F.E. Madill for a league game and came out with a 39-25 victory to up their league record to 2-1.0. The Panthers held a 21-16 lead after h4lf-time and continued to dominate play, taking the 39-25 win/ Ellison was top scorer again with 11 points, Rose had nine and Mi- chelle Caers managed eight. All throe of SH's girls' basketball teams play at Stratford Northwest- ern today for league games. Martin both singled, moved up one base when Dickey walked, one run scored when Baynham flied out to centre and another scored when Hem walked with the bases loaded. The final two runs that inning came when Parkinson singled. Exeter completed their scoring with a single run in the sixth and another in the seventh. The run in the sixth came courtesy of a Schade homer and in the seventh, Baynham led off with a single, moved to sec- ond on a error, and scored on two more errors by Lakeside while Par- kinson was batting. Dave Atthill went the distance on the mound for Exeter in getting the win. He gave up 11 hits, struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. Dickey"had one hit that night but the Express had 18 as they rolled to the league title, winning Friday night 15-10, and taking the final series, 2-1. Mohawks rebound to win LUCAN - The Exeter Mohawks beat the Dorchester Dolphins 7-6 Thursday night at the Lucan Arena Hi win their first exhibition game in the Senior A loop. Sunday after- noon's scheduled exhibition game in Lucan against Lambeth was can- celled after Lambeth called earlier Sunday to say they couldn't put a team together. Thursday was the first chance the Mohawk brass had a chance to evaluate some of their talent while playing against some strong com- petition. Especially pleasing to coach Dave Revington was the comeback their showed in the third period of Thursday's game. Exeter trailed 6-2. after two period and came back to win 7-6, scoring five times in the• final frame. Revington went with four main Football Panthers split two By Michelle Ellison TILLSONBURG - After some confusion about where the games were to be played, South Huron District High School's junior and senior football teams travelled to Tillsonburg for exhibition play Thursday. The senior Panthers re- turned home with an easy 43-6 vic- tory while the junior team brought home a disappointing 26-6 loss. The senior Panthers completely outplayed their opponents, mainly then defence. In the -first quarter, Dave O'Connor opened scoring on a 62 - yard run (.-1'" - vert to give the Panthers an early seven point lead. Later, an attempt - cd 33 -yard fictd• gee by -O'Connor; was wide and resulted in a one point' single. An 18 -yard pass from Harlen Tin- ney to Rob Wonnacott for a touch- down, a convert made by O'Connor and and 11 -yard run to a touchdown by Jeff Denottcr gave SH a 21 - point advantage over' the Geminis in the second quarter. Tillsonburg's only TD came on _an 88 yard pass/run early in the third quarter. Tinney answered with a short one - yard run for another Panther touch- down. O'Connor managed a two point convert making it a 29-6 count going into the final quarter of play. Wonnacott ran for a six-yard touchdown, Tinney completed a 10 - yard pass to O'Connor for the final touchdown of the . game and O'Connor completed both converts making it a final 43-6 victory. Please tum to Page 14 0 lines in the game The top -scoring trio of Dave Randerson, Quincy Wilker and Paul Barton looks to be in fine form as they accounted for the first three goals in the game for the Mohawks. Wayne Urbshott was between Jeff Shipley and Dale Gibbon, Craig Prydham centered Joe Scher- er and Greg Snyder, while Jeff Carr, Gord Brooks and Randy Bai- ley comprised the fourth line. Revington also went with five defenccmen in the game. Kris Bed ard was paired with Jamie Dubano- vich, while Barry Baynham and Ron Elliot were partnered. Work- ing in as the fifth defenccman was Les Arts. Revingtdn said he didn't want to play a lot of regulars because he al- ready knows what they do. It was a chance for them to look at some players that are new to the team. Starting Mohawk goaltendcr Jack Noguiera did not look sharp in the first 35 minutes of the game for Exeter. After the Mohawks opened the scoring six minutes into the contest, the Dolphins came back to score the next six goals, the last one coming just five minutes into the second period, before Noguiera finally slammed the door the rest of the period. Last year's back-up goalie to Rick Pikul, Bill Dark, relieved No- guiera in the final period and held Dorchester scoreless while the Mo- hawks made their comeback. Scoring for the Mohawks were; Barton from Wilkcr, Randerson from Bedard, Wilker from Barton and Randerson, Brooks unassisted, Scherer from Snyder, Bedard from Gibbon, and Prydham from Snyder. The Mohawks will close out their pre -season Friday night in Dorches- ter and Saturday night in Lambeth. Both games are at 8:30 p.m. The Mohawks will open the regu- lar season next Wednesday night, October 11, in Chatham and will begin at home Sunday, October 15 at 7:30 against Lambeth. Jib Way up there - George McEwan of the Exeter Centennials soCcer team, goes as high as he can to get a free ball away from the Chat• ham player when those teams met in Exeter Sunday afternoon. It was the final game of the year for the Centennials and it ended in a scoreless draw.
