ILDERTON - Due to almost per-
fect weather, attendance at Satur-
days Ilderton Fair was estimated at
12,000. .
Secretary -treasurer Marjorie Spei-
ran said cars and visitors on foot
were still streaming through the
gates at 3 p.m.
The 138 edition of the fair was
officially opened by London mayor
Tom Gosnell and Middlesex warden
Charles Corbett.
A Friday night amateur show at-
tracted 23 entrants.
The open steer competition was
wort by Jimmy Watson with Doug-
las Farms as reserve champion.
The ever popular calf scramble
was won by Mike Hern with the re-
serve title going to Clarence Carter.
The Saturday morning parade was
a colourful and long one. The Bill
Frank trophy for the best non-
commercial float was won by the
Ilderton Brownies.
Friday night, 4-H Homecraft
winners were junior Lisa Philips
and senior Mary Ann Tadell.
Lynda Brown is the 1989 Fair
Queen and the title of Middlesex
Dairy Princess goes to Carolyn
Sleeger. -
Saturdays entertainment was
provided by the Sweet Adelines,
the Ilderton Entertainers and the
Medway Madridal Choir.
The hunter and jumper horse
classes attracted the most entries
in the entire history of the fair.
Top prizes in sheep went to Ho-
ward Fletcher with the best ram
and Linda Stewart with the best
market lamb.
In standing field crop.competition
winners were: hay - Doug Adams,
wheat - Bev Shipley, barley - Hill -
stream Farms, corn - London town-
ship - Ron Smith. Lobo township
- Matthew Aerts, soybeans - Tom
Harris.
The barrow show championship
went to O'Neil Farms with Jack
Nethercott as reserve champ. 4-H
winners were Wayne Carter and
Lisa Dixon.
The flower arrangement and best
in show award went to Betty Par-
kin, Sandra Parker had the best pot-
ted plant and Marion Bere won in
cut flowers.
Theresa Van Den Boomen had the
best in show quilt and Edith Ste-
phenson won the most handiwork
points.
• Baking honours went to Karen
Zabity and combined points in bak-
ing and handwork went to Mary
Sells. The canning winner was Lo-
rene McKeen.
Junior winners were Bevan Reith
and Joanne Walls.
In school work, Cancer Society
poster prizes went to Gavin Ross
and Bart Dries, both of Centennial
and Kenneth Luce, Oxbow won the
Farm and Home Safety poster con-
test. -
Christine Holmes won best in
show photography and Jim Dixon
gained the most points in art.
'Roy Phillips of Hyde Park won
the prize for the largest pumpkin.
