OPP after speeders
LUCAN - Ontario Provincial Po-
lice in Lucan began a speeding and
seat belt enforcement initiative on
September 21 in response tto com-
plaints about traffic speed and viola-
tions on Main Street at the north -
end of Lucan.
Officers will be continuing an in-
creased enforcement for speeding
and shat belt violations in an at-
tempt to slow traffic along High-
way 4 through the Village. Since
last Thursday, 21 speeding and sev-
en seat belt charges have been laid
and this selective patrol will be con-
tinuing. Officers will not be issuing
any warnings and Lucan OPP De-
tachment is asking motorists to ad-
just their driving habits to avoid be-
ing stopped in Lucan.
Forty-six investigations were con-
ducted during the week. Fourteen of
these occurrences involved criminal
matters such as two break and en-
ters, three thefts and harassing
phone calls. Four wilful damage
complaints were also received.
Lucan and area residents are
warned that petty thefts and mis-
chief are again increasing in the
area. There were no impaired drivers
stopped during the week but six per-
sons were charged with Liquor Li-
cence Act violations. The remaining
investigations involved matters of a
general nature such as false alarms
and driving complaints.
There was a total of six motor ve-
hicle collisions reported. All in-
volved property damage only except
-for a minor single vehicle accident
in the Hyde Park area where the
driver complained of minimal inju-
ries to his neck.
To continue our impaired driving
information, this week's article will
concentrate on the Breathalyzer. The
Breathalyzer was developed in 1954
and has been extensively used by
police in several countries., includ-
ing Canada, since that time. The in-
strument operates using an ethyl al-
cohol sensitive solution which
changes colour if alcohol is passed
through it. Your breath is collected
and then bubbled into the solution.
After the solution changes colour,
is colour is compared to that of a
sealed container (ampoule) and
measured by a photometer. The dif-
ference
ifference in colour between these two
solutions is directly proportional to
the concentration of alcohol in your
breath. The amount of alcohol in
your breath relates directly to how
much alcohol is in your blood.
If a police officer gives you a de-
mand to do a Breathalyzer test, you
are compelled by law to do so. The
results of these tests are accurate and
have wide acceptanceby the courts
in Canada.
A Breathalyzer reading of 100
milligrams or more will. result in
charges of driving over the legal
limit. Impaired driving, as stated in
past articles, does not necessarily re-
late to Breathalyzer readings so low
readings can still result in charges
being laid.
Next week, we will discuss how
alcohol actually affects you.

F. - st meeting
of Lucan 4-H
LUCAN - Our first meeting was
on September 13. It was held at
Anne Dawson's home. Anne Daw-
son and Anne Holden are our lead-
ers.
We first nominated our officials
for the club. They are as follows;
president - Coley Butler, vice-
president - Sara Holden , treasurer -
Angie Latta; secretary and press re-
porter are roving.
We all had to bring a cereal box
which we recorded the sugar_ and
dietary fibre content. We also dis-
cussed eating fast but nutritiously.
We finished by snacking from reci-
pes in our book.
The second meeting was on Sep-
tember 20 at the home of Denise
Cowdery. We voted on the name
Snappy Snackers' for our club. At
the meeting, we discussed conven-
ience foods. We also talked about
labels and what has to be put on a
label by law. Best before dates and
fast food guide were also an issue.
We then made three pizzas; one
from a mix, one from scratch and
cooked a readymade one. We are
eating so well I can hardly wait till
the next meeting.
