(39c) let your words telldng Riverview WI -host for tea AILSA CRAIG - Riverview Women's Institute held a successful Tweedsmuir History display and tea on September 21, both afternoon and evening, in the Masonic Hall. President Leona Hughes greeted the guests and Jean Lee was in charge of the registration table and also re- ceived the donations. There were delightful displays by our local artists. Walter • Silverson had a table covered with his carv- ings and Beuy Sutherland displayed many pieces of her painted china. Marilyn Barbs to 1 a variety of pot- tery pieces and Marilyn Gilpin had many pieces of weaving. Ruth McCallum's display was many of her antique dishes and souvenirs. She also set up a display of pieces of knitting done ty Mrs. Isobel Jackson. The Tweedsmuir history books were all there for everyone to browse through. There were pic- tures of, buildings in the village as they used to be, and farm and fami- ly histories as well as stories about businesses in the village. There were also pictures and stories about schools, churches, cemeteries, lodg- es and clubs. A lot of interest was shown in the books of community news which contain clippings taken from the lo- cal papers throughout the years. Also on display were some old copies of the Ailsa Craig Banner and the Parkhill Gazette. The committee was pleased to have the pictures of old scenes in McGillivray Township that Lor- raine Hodgins had prepared. Among those attending were guests from neighboring Institutes, the area curator, Jean Radcliffe and the district president, Margaret Har- ris. Tea and cookies were served by Gertrude Rosser, Ruth Ross and Jean McKichan. Ruth McCallum and the Tweed- smuir History committee, Margaret Wilson, Evelyn McNaughton, Ruth Ross and Gertrude Rosser had worked for months preparing for the event and they were rewarded by the interest shown by the guests. The curator, Margaret Wilson, was also pleased to receive from some of the guests pieces of infor- mation and some old pictures to add to the history books. Supper and So- cial held at the school on Wednes- day evening, September 20. The guest speaker was Sue Barr of Lu - can who gave a slide presentation and told about her recent trip to Bangladesh with her adopted daughter from there. Christine Jones was honored with a bridal shower at the United Church on Wednesday evening, September 20 and hosted by Car- lene and Joanne Goos. Jackie Pierce read a poem based on Christine's life. Joanne Goos and Audrey Harl- off did readings. Helping to unwrap the gifts were Joanne Goos, Ellen Smit, and Melinda Tonek. At Granton United Church on Sunday, September 24, the Rev. Bruce Pierce's sermon was entitled, The Lost Secret of Great Religion. The lessons were from Psalms 118 and Hebrews 11. Jenny Blake was the bulletin steward. There was no service at the St. Thomas Anglican Church on Sun- day because of the Harvest 'thanks- giving service at St. Patrick's church, Saintsbury. A congregational meeting was held at the St. Thomas Anglican Church on Thursday evening, Sep- tember 21 to discuss the vision of the church for 2001. Granton WI Mrs. Percy Hodgins of St. Marys was the hostess for the Granton Women's Institute on Tuesday eve- ning, September 19. The roll call was answered with a thought for the day and Elsie Dann and Nora Wisscl were in charge of the program. Mrs. Dann read an ar- ticle aobut deciding the future of our health care. . She also gave a number of inter- esting weather predictions and a story about the caterpillar turning into a butterfly entitled the Fuzzy Magician. Mrs. Wisscl read two timely poems entitled The poor Old Planet and Be the Best of Whatever You Arc. Muriel Lewis presided and opened with a reading Work and Leisure. Business discussion in- cluded plans to attend the London arca convention at Embro on Octo- ber 12. Lunch was served by Mrs. Wis- scl, Mrs. Dann and the hostess. Granton No. 1 4-H began its fall course, Good Fast Food, at St. Thomas's Anglican Church on Sep- tember 21. The first meeting was devoted to Eating on the Run, em- phasizing the lack of nutrition in our favourite fact foods. A quiz was also given on Fast Food Styles. The leaders of the meeting were Dcanna Beatson and Cathie West - man. The results of the election of officers were: President - Casandra Harding, Vice -President Katie Ewald; and Secretary -Rotational. The meeting •closed with the mak- ing of Spiced Apple Muffins pre- pared by Melanie and Sylvia Beat - son from Good Foods Fast cookbook.
