Golf team in tournament

EXETER - Last Thursday, South
Huron District High School sent a
girls' and boy's golf team to the
Huron -Perth tournament in Sea -
forth.
Deanna Bileski turned in the Pan-
thers' best result scoring 42 on the
girls nine -hole rse. This score
gave Bileski the girls' H -P title for
the sec'nd year in a row.
Jason Heywood had the low gross
for SH's boys squad, scoring 82 for
18 -holes. Craig Linton brought in
an 85, Jason Schilbe 89 and Jim
Ahrens 98 to give the team a sixth-
place overall finish.
Also playing on the girls four-
some was Michelle Caers and
Christine Rose each shooting a 66
and Kim Murray who brought in a
70 to place the Panthers third over-
all.
Panthers lose consolation

EXETER - Some very competi-
tive basketball was playedon the
weekend at South Huron District
High School's Second Annual Sen-
ior Girls' Tournament. Eight teams
from Huron, Lambton, Oxford and
Middlesex Counties participated in
the two-day event.
South Huron's senior girls played
three games, advancing to the con-
solation final which they played to
a close 36-32 loss.
On Friday night, the Panthers
met Medway Secondary School of
Arva. The girls played their best
game of the season thus far but de-
spite a convincing 16-8 lead at half
timd, fell short 29-25 in the end.
Leading the scoring for SH was
Christine Rose with seven points,
Michelle Caers with six and Liz
Mol and Michelle Ellison with
four points each.
This loss moved SH over to the
consolation bracket.of the tourna-
ment where the Panthers met West
Elgin of St. Thomas.
SH had little difficulty taking a
quick 21-8 lead over their oppo-
nents in this game and eventually
taking a 30-20 victory.
Julie Merner led scoring for the
Panthers with nine, Mol followed
with six and Caers chipped in with
four.
The win advanced the girls to the
consolation final against Lambton
Central High School of Petrolia.
This game rarely saw a four -
point spread either way with both
teams working hard for the win.
• The Panthers held their competi-
tion to a 22-18 lead at half-time

and they continued to play some
excellent basketball.
Unfortunately, the Panthers didn't
catch Lambton Central but came
out oh the short end of a 36-32
count.
Ellison led scoring with 14
points, Caers had six and Mol five.
The championship game between
Strathroy Secondary School and
North Middlesex High School, of
Parkhill was also very competitive
and ended in a slight -44-42 victory
for Parkhill.
All three of SH's girl's basketball
teams travel to Godcrich today
(Wednesday) for league games.
EXETER - Last week, South
Huron District High School's girls'
field hockey team played three
league games to give them an early
record of 3-0-0.
On Tuesday, the Panthers played
back-to-back league games against
Stratford Northwestern and Central.
Against Northwestern, the locals
dominated play throughout the
game taking a 5-1 win.
Tip Campbell led offensively
with three goals, while Marcie Elli-
son and Becci Farquhar netted one
apiece.
In the game against Central, the
Panthers outplayed their opponents
winning 4-0.
Ellison potted two more and
Sucanne Soldan also put two past
the Ram's goaltendcr.

The Panthers had two touchdowns
called back on penalties.
Mark Burton intercepted a pass
and returned it to the 35 -yard line
but SH was called,for clipping.
Tinney converted a 20 -yard pass
to O'Connor for a touchdown but
again the Panthers were called back
for ineligible receiver down field.
The junior and senior Panthers
play exhibition games against the
Tillsonburg Gemini this week.

WINGHAM - Last week, South
Huron District High School's cross-
country team attended two meets in
preparation for Huron -Perth.
On Tuesday, the team travelled

EXETER - On the weekend,
South Huron District High
School's field hockey Panthers
came away with a record of 13
goals for and only one against in
the Scarborough Invitational tourna-
ment.
The tournament gave SH the op-'
portunity to compete against the
all -Ontario bound teams from To-
ronto area and according to Panther
coach Jim Workman, his team gave
a strong performance.
The girls played extremely well in
pool play, taking all five games.
The first against St. Catharines
Collegiate ended in a 1-0 victory in
favour of the locals. SH's lone goal
scorer was Tina Campbell.
The Panthers went on to defeat
Pearson Secondary School of Scar-
borough 3-0 with goals being netted
by Suanne Soldan, Campbell and
Kim Lingard. '
In game three, SH easily defeated
a Toronto team by a 5-0 count.
Campbell netted two, while Becci
Farquhar, Soldan and Tonya Riehl
each got one.
The fourth game was the key to
win in pool play, against all- Onta-
rio rivals O'Neill from Oshawa.
Both teams performed well but
the Panthers came out on top 1-0
on a goal by Leanne Dietrich.
In their final game of pool play,
Farquhar scored twice an Campbell
once to defeat Birchmount _Colle-
giate 3-0. .
The • semi-final game against
Agincourt Collegiate saw both
teams play great hockey. The play
went from end to end with both
teams having many scoring oppor-
tunities.
The locals compete in the Titan
Tournament in St. Thomas on Fri-
day.

As a team, South Huron's Junior
girls placed second with Deanna
Olmstead bringing in the best fin-
ish of seventh. Raquel Thompson
followed closely with eighth, Ni-
cole Gill placed 10th and Lori
Parker finished 12th.
Kim VanDongen led the Junior
girls race until forced to drop out
due to a knee injury.
A third-place team finish for
South HuropJunior boys was led
by a fifth -per individual placing
for Brett Rideout.. Dan Vanderlaan
and David Schwindt fmished 14th
and 20th respectively.
Scott Wellington brought in an
impressive fifth place finish for
South Huron's Senior boys.
The Panther's only other senior
D
runner, Paul Dickert, placed 12th.
Linda Wallis placed eighth, Vic-
toria Bisback 13th and Jana Web-
ster 14th in the Midget girls catego-
ry.
For Midget boys, Jamie Dougall
led South Huron's team with a third
place finish followed by Ben Gei-
ger 18th and Jamie Ramer 20th.
On Thursday, the team partipipat-
ed in a meet held at the Untiersity
of Western Ontario.
Top half of the field performanc-
es were turned in by Schwindt,
Shawn McFalls, Raquel Thompson
and Charlene Regier.
Dougall. brought in another im-
pressive third place finish for the
Panthers Midget boys and Rideout
placed 24th in the Junior boy's cat-
egory.
CaIrie Lynn Ducharme finished
20th for the Junior girls and Dean-
na Olmstead ran as a Senior girl,
placing 19th.
