Football Panthers earn victories

EXETER - The Junior and Scnior
football teams of South Huron Dis-
trict High School opened league
play last Thursday against the Lis-
towel Lords and both teams turned
in victories of 16-6 and 28-0 respec-
tively.
Junior coach, Dave Cox, felt his
team played well both offensively
and defensively. "We won the war
in the trenches. It was a game we
controlled," he commented.
In the first and second quarters, Ja-
son McNeil and Randy Johnson
scored touchdowns each and John-
son kicked two converts to give the
Panthers a convincing 14-01ehd.
Listowel conceded two points on
a safety, giving SH a 16-0 Lead.
The Panthers held this lead until
the last minute of play when the
Lords scored a long run touchdown
against SH's substitute defence to
make it a final 16-6 count.
The senior Panthers easily defeat-
ed the Lords 18-0.
"Listowel didn't cause us much
trouble after we adjusted to their of-
fense. In fact, we stopped them
cold," said Senior coach Ron Bo-
gart.
The Panthers scored once in each
quarter. The first quarter saw quarter-
back Harlen Tinney complete a 23 -
yard pass to Dave O'Connor for a
touchdown. O'Connor kicked the
convert to give SH a 7-0 lead over
their opponents.
A three -yard run by Jeff DenOttcr
gave the Panthers their second
touchdown of the game with
O'Connor making the convert.
Tinney's passing proved to be a
threat to the Lords as he completed
a 15 -yard pass to O'Connor for the
third touchdown and a 10 -yard pass

Express even Final
EXETER - The Exeter Express
evened their best -of -three Western
Ontario Senior D league final ser-
ies at one game each when they de-
feated Lakeside 10-6 in Exeter Sun-
day.
The Express Lost the opening
game of the series last Sunday in
Lakeside by a 4-3 count to fall be-
hind by a game.
The Express got onto the score-
board first Sunday with a run in the
first inning. Rob Dickey led off the
game with a double -moved to third
when Pete Heeney grounded out
and scored when Doug Fairbairn
grounded out.
Lakeside tied the game with a run
in the third and took a 2-1 lead
with a run in the fifth inning.
The Express got back in even
terms with a run in their half of the
fifth. Darcy Martin led off with a
walk, moved to second when Barry
Baynham walked' and scored after
Heenev singled.
Shaw signs
NEW YORK - Exeter native
Dave Shaw, 25, has negotiated a
new contract with the New York
Rangers. No details were availa-
ble at press time. Shaw, Que-
bec's first round draft choice was
traded to the Rangers before the
1987-88 season.
Shaw had six goals and 11 as-
sists last season.
Each team then scored three runs
in the sixth inning. Kevin Hern.
Brian Mercer and Dave Parson each
scored runs after walking, but were
helped along by a Martin single
and double by Baynham.
Exeter put the game on ice with
one run in the seventh and three
more in the eighth. The runs in the
came came when Martin and Bayn
ham hit back-to-back homers. Mar-
tin's was a two -run shot.
Doug Schade started on the hill
for the Express and lasted until the
sixth inning when he got some re-
lief help from Dave Atthill.
The third -and -final game of the
series will be in Byron Friday
night.
