Pre -season .starts HURON PARK - The Exeter Hawks picked up a win and a tie in their first two pre -season games on the weekend. They tied the Lucan Irish 2-2 at the Stephen Township Arena Fri- day night and beat the Tavistock Braves in St. Marys Sunday after- noon 3-2. Friday night's affair was a chippy contest with several altercations happening in the first period. Two players from each side were thrown out for fighting in the first period and five in all. Larry Lewis and Ja- mie Tomes for the Hawks and Mar- ty Rivard and Jeremy Gough for the Irish all had early showers that night. Doug Clarke, Jim Dickins and Bob Hern, of the Hawks and Todd Hayter Jamie Pearce and Jack Legg, of the Irish, were all thrown out for fisticuffs in the third period. In addition to the major penal- ties, the Hawks were assessed 19 and the Irish 17 minor penalties. Exeter led 1-0 when Greg Black - ler scored from Harlen Tinney and David O'Connor at 18:11 of the first period. Lucan got back on even terms when Lucan captain Brian Schuyler scored the only goal of the second period, at 13:36, from John Sharpe Please tum to page 15 Minor Hockey convener .looking for answers Dear Sir: • Over the past few years we have tried unsuccessfully to have ice in the Exeter arena during the month of September so our kids wouldn't have to practise in Huron Park, We have all but given up on this idea because the Rec. Board seems to have a thousand excuses whywe should not. I always thought that a hockey arena was built to play hockey in when the season is at hand. I see no reason why the fair can't be held 2- 3 weeks earlier. So what if it would coincide with the London Fair; I personnally have gone to the London Fair twice in the last 15 years, but I never miss the Exeter Fair. (We might even have some nicer weather.) The Shamrock Executive that governs the league that Exeter plays in has been compiling information since June and finalized the schedule on September 10. Our first home games are to be played on October 1. On September 20 I was informed by facilities manager Cam Steward - son that a contractor will start installing metal siding on the arena as soon as the fair is over. This maintenance has been long overdue. How- ever, some work has to be done inside the building, concerning a va- pour barrier, and the compressors that freeze the ice cannot be started as planned, therefore we must cancel our games scheduled for Sunday. Since the ice was taken out of the arena at the beginning of April, there have been six months to get the job done while there was practi- cally nothing going on in the arena. Excellent planning! Who is at fault in this matter? The Rec. Board or Town Council? I am sure one will blame the other. Why is it so hard to get money from council to maintain a building that was given to them and paid in full by the people of Exeter and sur- rounding communities; a byilding that does so much for our youth?
