Fair's 4-H Calf Club results
EXETER - The 4-H calf club
show was part of Saturday after-
noon's program at the Exeter Fair.
Conformation winners in heifers'
were Bryon Etherington, Chris
Weigand and Tim Hoffman while
best with steers were Lisa Hern,
Brad Hern and Michael Hem.
Winning in junior showmanship
were Tim Hoffman, Jennifer Wei-
gand and Bryon Ellerington. Best in
the senior category were Michael
Hem, Lisa Hern and Joe Gower.
In grains and seeds, Allan Rundle
compiled the most points in grains
and seeds with Hern Farms as run-
nerup. Cliff Hicks also won most
points in one category.
Staffa girl is
crowned queen

STAFFA - Congratulations to
Joan Kerslake, daughter of Bill and
Fred Kerslake, Staffa who was
crowned "Queen of the Fair" at
Stratford Fair on Thursday eve-
ning. -
On -Monday, September 18, at 7
p.m. the first meeting of the Staffa
#1 "Good Foods Fast" club was:.
held at Hibbert United Church.
The leaders are Doris Jeffery and
Freda Kerslake. The members are
Pauline Fell, Anne Kerslake, Jenny
McCaughey, Anne Taylor, Kailey
Dow, Chrissy Miller, Lori Jo Gar-
diner, Steve Pullman, Gerald Ker-
slake, Joan Kerslake, Marj Viss-
cher and Karen Norris.
Officers are: president Gerald
Kerslake, vice. president Steve Pull-
man, secretary Jenny McCaughey,
ass't secretary Marj Visscher, treas-
urer Chrissy Miller, press reporter
Anne Taylor and phone committee
East - Kailey Dow, West - Lori Jo
Gardiner.
Other winners were: barley, Rene
Van Bruaene; white beans, John
Thomson; first cut hay, Tom Hern;
second cut hay, Gerald Dearing.
In the field crop competition, a
combination of field score plus fair
exhibit was • won by Peter Tuckey
with Alan Hern in second place.
Individual crop winners were:
wheat, Peter Tuckey; white beans,
Alan Powe; barley; Bruce Shapton;
hay, Cliff Hicks, grain corn, Peter
Tuckey; ensilage Corn, Alan Hern.
In the fruit judging, Jim Dixon
was best with Ida Red apples and
Tom Slavin won with Bartlett
pears.
Vegetable winners were: vegeta-
ble display, Wayne Shapton; beets,
Joyce Dicky; onions, Les Cudmore;
herbs, Viola Slavin; tomatoes, Gla-
dys Cudmore, potatoes, Olga Hern,
sunflower, Linda Russell; Spanish
onions, Sandy Robilliard; pie
pumpkins, Earl French; pepper
squash, Bob Reynolds.
In the sheep judging, Don Dear-
ing exhibited the champion Dorset
Hom ram and Adrian De Bruyn had
the champion ewe.
Oxford Down winners were Bar-
bara Benedict with the best ram and
Don Dearing with the top ewe and
in Suffolk the best were shown by
Adrian DeBruyn and Thom Paine.
The grand champion flock was
shown by Don Dearing and the re-
serve championship went to J. Ed-
ward Jackson.
The goat show produced winners
for Andrew Hansford, Luke Hay-
ward and Pauline Martin.
More than 400 birds were entered
in the poultry and pigeon show, up
considerably from last year.
Winners in the best Minorca
cockerel section were Michael Beck-
er,Cliff Pepper and Donald Beirnes
while the best with fantail saddle
pigeon and Old English game
cockerel were Ron Parsons and Or-
val Shewfelt, respectively.
The Haflinger horse show pro-
vided red ribbons for Stewart Thiel,
Ron Moore and Ted Hayard.
Grabbing off prizes in the South
Huron All Breeds Horse Associa-
tion show were Candice Mennen,
Bill Storey, Lisa Currah, Jackie
Wildfong and Jan Arbogast.
In the Arabian horse show, local
winners were Adriaan Brand and
Cam Darling, both of .Crediton and
Cathy Rowberry from Lucan.
Other winners were Darren Cock-
erham, Linda Moyes, Jean Din-
smore, Shanny Christie, Sandy Ar-
nold and FredZicard.
Auction prize hams
EXETER - The top five hams
in the hog carcass competition at
the 1989 Exeter Fall Fair were
sold by auction Friday night.
Hans Brand of R.R. 2, Crediton
exhibited the champion ham. It
was purchased by Exeter District
Co -Op for $7.50 a pound. The
runnerup owned by Brad Cann,
R.R. 3, Exeter went to Hensall
District Co -Op for ,$6.50 per
pound.

from Joop Grotentraast of R.R.
3, Dashwood for $6 a pound. The
fourth place ham shown by Tony
Zwambag of R.R. 2, Crediton
went to Gerald Johns, R.R. 3, Ex-
eter for $5.50 a pound and the
fifth prize winner was bought by
auctioneer Bob Heywood for
$6.50 a pound. It belonged to Jeff
Brand, R.R. 2, Crediton. The auc-
tioneer was Huron MPP Jack Rid-
dell.
