Woodcarver guest of Kippen East WI
HENSALL - On Wednesday,
September 20 in Hensall United
Church the Kippen East Women's
Institute opened the fall season
with a special guest, Mr. Earl
Oesch, who spoke on his hobby of
woodcarving. Mr. Oesch brought
along plenty of interesting samples
of his work which spans over 30
years.
In 1957 he started out by carving
herons out of walnut and reckoned
he had completed between 200-300
of them! Then he progressed to
more difficult birds, after having
learned the technique of feathering.
Loons, woodducks, blue jays, car-
dinals, roosters, woodpeckers,
swans, eagles, Canada geese, have
all come almost lifelike with his
skillful hands. Various kinds of
wood are now used: basswood, ce-
dar, pine and butternut are some.
He hasn't restricted his carving to
birds as horses, pigs and other ani-
mals have been carved by him. He
has seven made some of his own
carving tools. His wife Doreen who
came along with him also encour-
ages him in his hobby.
President Grace Drummond as
usual came up with several good
reading's, "Just for one Day" "Seven
Ages of Man" and Two Old Wid-
ows". Helen MacLean read "Fanta-
sy Island
During the summer months sev-
eral W.I. pins had gone astray,
hence a 200 fine was levied on the
following members who turned up
without their pin: Grace Eyre, Mary
Broadfoot, Rena Caldwell and
Ruby Triebner.
Margaret Hoggarth brought greet-
ings from Theydon Bois Women's
Institute in Essex, England, where
she was fortunate to attend their
August garden party when they had
about 100 members present.
Rena Caldwell presented two ex-
cellent contests; Grace Eyre and
Margaret Hoggarth obtained most
points in these. An invitation was
read from one of our members,
Evelyn Workman, to attend her
50th wedding anniversary on Octo-
ber 14 at St. Marys.
Hostesses were Ruby Triebner
and Grace Eyre, lunch committee
Thea Wisch and Dorothy Bell.
