Cross country begins
LONDON - South Huron District
High School's cross country opened
their season on the weekend in the
Banting Secondary School meet at
Springbank Park in London.
Coach, Joe Fulop, travelled with
only a squad of six runners and
came through with a couple of good
Volleyball
starts
STRATFORD - South Huron
District High School's junior boys'
volleyball team got off to a good
start for the season at an early tour-
nament held in Stratford on the
weekend.
Last year's Huron -Perth champi-
ons, with six returning players and
seven rookies, recorded six wins
and four losses in pool play to
place second.
Unfortunately, the Panthers were
defeated 12-15 and 11-15 by Glen-
coe in the playoffs, a team that
went on to become the tournament
champions.
The team's league opener is Octo-
ber 3 in Clinton. Both SH's junior
and senior boys' volleyball teams
will will be working hard this sea-
son to qualify for WOSSA which
will be held at South Huron No-
vember 17 and 18.
Football
gears up
LONDON - South Huron Dis-
trict High School's junior and sen-
ior football teams got some prac-
tice in during controlled
scrimmages against Laurier Secon-
dary School of London, on Friday.
With each team starting on their
25-yardline and running 10 offen-
sive plays followed by 10 defensive
plays, the junior Panthers returned
home with an 18-12 victory. The
seniors brought home a 6-6 tie to
prepare them for upcoming league
play.
Jason McNeil ran in two touch-
downs for SH's junior team on
runs of 70 and 50 yards.
McNeil also took another long
run of 60 yards, got caught on
about the two yard line but man-
aged to set up the touchdown made
by Jay Hippern.
Coach, Dave Cox, felt it was
simply good practice for his squad.
The senior Panthers also proved
themselves good performers.
. Laurier opened scoring.ott ;heir
very first play on an 80 -yard run
for the touchd1Own.
SH came back, however, with aaa
80 -yard pass from Harden Tinney to
Dave O'Connor for a touchdown.
No kicking was allowed, leaving
the teams in a 6-6 clash.
"If we get our act together this
week in practice, then I think we
will be fairly tough on Thursday
(in Listowel)," commented Bogart.
Both teams plair league openers
on Thursday in Listowel.
Wrong name
John Pepper (not John Kestle)
and partner Dave Woodward, Exet-
er, were the gold medal shuffle-
board winners in the Senior Games
held in Eiceter in June.

Kim VanDongen made the high-
est placing for. the Panthers by fin-
ishing 17th in the junior girls divi-
sion.
Brett Rideout placed 19th and Dan
Vanderlaan 41st for the junior
boys.
In the midget boys category, Ja-
mie Dougal finished 31st, Matt
Miller 79th and Ben Geiger 92nd.
The team attends the University
of Western Ontario's Invitational
meet on Thursday. •
SIo-pitch
finishes
EXETER - The South Huron La-
dies Slo-Pitch League wound up an-
other year with their playoff tourna-
ment on September 8, 9 and 12.
The "C" winners were Big "0"
Sockettes while the "C" runners up
were Nuturals. The "B" winners
were Cheers and the Inn Girls took
the "8" runners up title.
Downtown Dollies won "A"
championships while the "A" run-
ners up were the Sundowners.
The annual league meeting will
be held on Tuesday, September 26
at 8:00 p.m. at South Huron Rec
Centre. A new executive will be
elected and rules will be discussed.
Anyone with positive new sug-
gestions or questions is encouraged
to be present.
All coaches and players are urged
to attend and offer their input as
well.
